White Lives Don't Matter. As white lives.' Following the message (tweet inset), which has since been deleted by Twitter, the academic was met with a barrage of outrage and a petition demanding that she be fired was also launched. However today the Russel Group University defended the 'rights of its academics to express their own lawful opinions' and said it deplored the terms of abuse and personal attacks against Dr Gopal.

Clearly the University VC doesn't have the same backbone as Keir Starmer...Tory!
I'm sorry, maybe I'm being thick, but how is this an expression of personal beliefs rather than racism ?
I wonder if I'm alone in wondering what the reaction of the University would be if it was a white male lecturer tweeting that black lives don't matter.
I'm guessing it would not be viewed as a personal, lawful expression.
Its a stupid statement like this that immediately undoes a huge amount of good work, causing friction and alienation.

Whilst no-one can condone Jakethepeg's original actions ( Not the Rolf harris one-another minefield- but the thick version with less neurones), surely he has a case for saying it was his right express his own lawful opinion?

As white lives.” Since posting, the professor has received death threats and abuse, while a petition was launched demanding that she be fired by Cambridge University. It comes after a banner reading ‘White Lives Matter’ was flown over the Etihad Stadium in Manchester just after kick-off between Manchester City and Burnley on Monday night, sparking a police investigation.
