Do you think i'm a good poker player?

EmmaEPEmmaEP Member Posts: 21
Hi, This is my first forum post.

My results so far today are i lost a £20 Freeroll Tournament at 1am in the morning LOL. i then came 2nd in a £20 Freeroll Tournament out of 124 poker players including me which is my best tournament result so far. i then won a £2.20p DYM Sit And Go but then i lost a £2.20p DYM Sit And Go, Another £2.20p DYM Sit And Go and then a £1.10p DYM Sit And Go. Does this make me a bad poker player? or did i just have a losing streak? or something else. Also have you ever had a run of losses?

i once came 27th out of 693 players in a tournament that was not today.

i have also came 3rd out of 25 players that was not today.

    Welcome to the Forum.

It's hard to tell from what you have posted whether you are good or bad, the variance in tournament poker means you can only assess your ability over a much larger sample size.

As long as you are enjoying the game & are willing to try to learn & improve, that's all that matters really.

Keep us updated about how things go, & if you have any questions, fire away.

@Tikay10 Thanks for replying to my post. i was worried about posting my question. The reason i decided to post my question is because i am wondering if i am a good or not and should i still play poker or not. Out of a shark and a fish i would say that i am a fish but not the smallest fish out there. i enjoy poker. i am the type of person who likes to study something that i am interested in. i have 2 poker books and i have recently purchased a magazine that has Tom Dwan who is one of my favourite poker players on the cover. i have a question for you but if you don't want to share i understand... have you ever had a losing streak or maybe a big loss?

To be able to give any rational assessment of ability you will need VOLUME and lots of it - to put this in context, re-assess after you've played 1000 tournaments and your sample size will still not be deemed large enough to determine your true win rate in any format. opt in on sharskcope if you like it will track your results for you. You can find out how to do this on sharkscope.com.

If you want to get better fast i would suggest not only playing a ton but make sure you are ingesting a lot of poker content too.

This forum is also awesome for posting hand histories, if you have any questions you will often get a quick reply from some absolute crushers of the game which is no doubt an invaluable tool.

    good luck !!

    @EmmaEP

No need to worry about posting questions, they are all decent people on this forum.

"have you ever had a losing streak or maybe a big loss?"

This is something you are going to need to get used to - EVERY single poker player has losing runs. Even the very best. So us mere mortals have them, yes, & they are quite a test of character. Big losses? Ha, yes, a few, but if you decide in advance how much you are prepared to spend per week or month & stick to it rigidly. It's very important not to chase losses in poker.

one of the key things when your learning is not to try and move up stakes too quick. Sky is probably the best site for you to play on to learn though (no bias here) fields are smaller than most networks so you get a lot of experience towards the end of tournaments which is where people who are profitable have the biggest edge. I would recommend picking a type of game you like e.g tourneys or cash or sngs and study that in particular as cash and tourneys because of their depth in big blinds vary significantly in how they play.

be a little careful with some poker literature some of it is very outdated although can be useful, I learnt so much for the "harrington on holdem series" years ago, be suprised if you could beat the games really just by reading that now but it helps you start getting into the right mind set and thought processes. Think Cole Souths "let their be range" was pretty good back in the day for how to adapt your thought process preflop.
worth a search on twoplustwo.com for a post chris moorman made about 180 man sit and gos it's in the archive but that would be useful for someone starting out learning.

If you are pretty good at math, like algebra and **** I would highly recommend a pdf called 'applications of no limit holdem' if you can find it online, goes really deep into the math behind the game.

Biggest winners on sky playing tournaments do still have 100 buy in downswings so if they played average of £10 tourneys would expect the occasional £1000 downswing, it something you can't really prepare for emotionally but will inevitably happen.

Welcome to the forum, I find as long as you play within your means,
then downswings are not too bad. There's always going to be luck involved with dyms but as long as it's a small percentage of your bankroll- it makes it a lot easier to shake off a loss.
For that reason I play microstakes dyms and build my stack with the weekly freerolls. Goodluck on the tables:)

One thing that really helped me when I started out a couple of months ago was some proper bankroll management; it helps ride the variance. In addition, playing the very lowest of stakes and naturally progress as you feel comfortable you can beat each level. There’s a lot of fundamentals you will learn at the micros and there’s plenty of useful poker content out there which is worth consuming as you progress.

I typically stick to an average buy in (ABI) per session of no more than 1% of my bankroll.

So, I started out with £200 playing mainly £2.20 MTTs, then mixed in £5s, £11s and eventually £22s as my bankroll grew but making sure I say below an ABI of 1%.

Sorry, forgot to say...the one piece of advice I was given for DYM's ( and it applies equally as well for satellites to bigger tournaments) is you don't have to win it, just finish in the top 3...so once you apply that logic to your game/betting approach, it helps!

    Absolutely Delighted, and will.

Further, let's see, the best of the best, rock up, and have the whotsits, to chime in.
    'Emma'
    take, or leave,..
Embrace this genuine advice, and your 'potential game' will improve, Off The Hook, or it should.

1.scrap dyms (high variance, specialist area!)
Or, consume John Conners time served, step by step advice, on this forum, and or, consume Moshmans books.
2.BANKROLL, get, have, obtain, a dedicated poker bankroll, you will need more, than most think.

now, myself, misterpj has a few 'specialist fans' and an army of 'haters'
(but) over any fair agreed period of time, all hands, all plays, all 'face up' for the world to conclude, run through any Icm izer, I will take your no limit hold em game, to another level.
When you read this, it is inspired, by, one day, a 'former adversary' who I Adore, and my 'haters' will get indegestion.

    Mtts multi table tournaments, ONLY.

1.play (only play, good cards, and you will be a winning player),
2.a four letter word, that's awesome ammunition in 6 handed hold em no limit poker, FOLD.
    3.what are good cards?
    these are;
    highlighted in yellow

4.the majority of the time, you want to be playing, from, the button, the big blind, or 'aside the button' that's your position, to the right hand side of the button.
5.snap fold the small blind, every time, unless pocket cards of the yellow variety.
6.on those, joyous occasions, rare, but, joyous, with the absolute stone cold nuts (a hand that cannot be beaten) ship, shove, over bet the lot, 3 seconds before clock runs down, for clarification, possibly an argument re extracting value, but, believe me, time served move.
7.Educate yourself, re, the flop turn disconnect, exploit.
8.dont, ever, easy to write, but, equally easy to implement, don't, DO NOT EVER TILT, ice, in your poker veins.Chip and a chair.
    9. Understand player types (exploit) notes, take notes, Leopards, don't change their spots, neither do a high % of players, on this site.
    10. MEGA IMPORTANT, 'vary your game' be impossible to read.
    11. Learn to float
    12. Learn to raise, Reraise, 3 bet 4 bet,.
    13. Bluff raising is, a skill, an art, learn learn, learn
    14. Dedicated to my buddy, the Prof of The Mad,........... 3 bet the whotsits, out of some of the utter....KING, GRANDE, LANGUSTINES, That think they can play poker

    ——----------------

Emma, your starter for '14' will, gladly, write another 10 plus 10
Lets see, These so called PHENOMS, step up, in public..
    Best wishes

Hi Emma, the thing that alot of people forget is that whilst poker is somewhat a game of skill, it takes a bit of luck too, as long as it stays fun and you stick to playing within your budget then carry on playing. Everyone can go through "dry periods" when you seem to never win, but the wheel of fortune will turn again then you will win again. I tend to stick to the micro games mostly, but if I place regularly in the payzone (and my account funds are more than I deposit), then and only then do I move up to the low stakes games. I hope to one day be able to move to the next level, never made it yet, but I live in hope. Good luck on the tables and maybe one day we will be on the same table.

Best of luck at the tables. I'd check out some YouTube videos. There are even some old ones on there from when Sky Poker had its own tv channel
