Is this normal / acceptable?

tomgooduntomgoodun Member Posts: 3,756
I enjoy playing the odd game here.
Mostly enjoy Omaha Hi Lo. As the player pool is mostly very friendly.
This evening I played the £5 hi lo at 7:18pm on my iPad., I have been abused before, and mostly shrug it off.
This evening I was called a ‘tard.
I asked the person what they meant , eg. Do you mean retard?
He replied someone hard of thinking,

I’m disgusted, and won’t be playing again this evening.

I completely understand, but not playing lets them win.

    Is this a joke?

Why would you consider this a joke ?

I have no wish to be in the same space as people who behave in such a manner.

People say this sort of stuff at the tables all day every day. Are you telling me that this is the first time someone has said something offensive to you at a poker table?

If you find that offensive then I recommend hiding the chat box because you're in for a rough ride.

Got to be a joke, I can't believe someone can be this sensitive

It has to be a troll. @tomgoodun has 3000 posts here... so I'm presuming he plays a lot of poker.

It wouldn't surprise me these days.

As I said in my opening post, it’s not the first time I have been abused.
The term used is my issue, I honestly thought in this day and age these words were used by people not welcome here.
Online poker isn’t getting the numbers it used to have ( COVID put a spike in the numbers, but not sustainable) and I won’t be the only person put off by such behaviour.

You have answered the first part of the question.
    It seems it is normal

What’s your take on the second part, is it acceptable?

Well, no, I suppose it's not, but the issue isn't to do with the offender. It's more to do with British playground culture than anything poker related. If it makes you feel any better my son called me a 'douche' the other day. I called him a 'dirty ****' and attempted to assault him then finished making my cup of tea and then we both got on with our day.

    I get it.
What you seem to be saying ( please correct me if I’m barking up the wrong tree) is that people are too soft these days, and a good old fashioned clip round the ear ‘ole would sort it out.

Personally I look at the world a different way, some things which people do and say need calling out on.
A wise man once told me, always listen to a dissenting voice, because for every one voice there are thousands thinking the same but don’t want to put themselves in the firing line.

I don't necessarily jump on the 'everybody is too soft' boat, and I am almost always ready to listen to dissenting voices, but I think, in this case, making a thread because someone called you a tard in chat is an extreme case of being offended too easily, hence the reactions in this thread.

@tomgoodun The word tard is used more or less in place of the word idiot these days. That's how widespread it is. I'm not saying I agree with it's use but just making you aware of the fact.

EDIT: Have you ever called anyone an idiot before?

The English Language is so complex, but let’s not fool ourselves into believing certain words mean different things.

If the word tard is being used in place of the word idiot, why do you think that is? Why just not put a profanity in front of idiot to give it more oomph.

The word ‘tard is short for retard, hence the apostrophe, and no amount of sleight of hand, or bull.... reasoning is going to convince me otherwise.

The word awful is supposed to mean full of awe as well, but I urge you not to tell someone you admire that you think they're awful.

The person who called you tard called you such because he didn't like your play, or you bad beat him, and NOT because they think you're a retard. They have no idea whether you are a retard or not because they've never met you, and you're aware of that, so it's a bit daft getting so offended by it.
