Decade 77-87 - a grown up disco: new wave, punk, postpunk, goth & indie.
This date in 1982 saw a UK re-release of the single OUR LIPS ARE SEALED by the GO-GO’s, (April 16th, 1982).
Written by Go-Go's guitarist Jane Wiedlin and the late Specials/Fun Boy Three singer Terry Hall, the song told the story of the pair’s secret affair, one that took place when The Go-Go's were supporting The Specials on the latter's 1980 United States tour.
On this date in 1977, THE JAM released their debut single, IN THE CITY, (April 29th, 1977).
The blistering clarion call for uprising in the voice of disenfranchised youth, IN THE CITY, announced The Jam as astute chroniclers of their time.
As for Polydor, the label couldn’t have wished for a better debut from the Woking Wonders. Rick Buckler's drumming was channelled fury; Bruce Foxton’s bass relentless, foot-on-the-floor; Paul Weller's guitar lines just as slashing as his lyrics, words that betrayed his desire to escape small-town mentality and reach for a metropolitan view.
'In The City' crackled and burned, and did reasonably well in the charts, climbing up to #40, and heralded a long-lasting relationship between The Jam and chart positions in the UK.
Decade 77-87 - a grown up disco: new wave, punk, postpunk, goth & indie.
On this date in 1978, THE REZILLOS released the single TOP OF THE POPS, (July 21st, 1978).
Written by future Human Leaguer Jo Callis, TOP OF THE POPS, a tune as rich in irony as it was melody, motored on Fay Fife's vocal quipping, a range somewhere between Lulu's shake and Siouxsie's fury and stab.
Fife interviewed for the ‘TOTP Story of 1978’ confirmed what we already knew: that the song was poking fun at the show rather than honouring it.
“Funnily enough the show’s producers didn’t seem to get the irony content at all it seems,” chuckled Fay.
The single made the top 20 of the UK Singles Chart, reaching number 17, and earned the group an appearance on the titular music programme.
“Alright! So you made the grade Hold tight! To the buck you made Just wait! You been rated for Constipated peak viewing time…
