Please. Stop quoting the inane drivel that is the Daily Fail. More nonsense.
If you read the article, rather than the clickbait, there are 17 people on Remand in Essex for being Just Stop Oil protesters. 17 isn't exactly a massive number.
And one man's "nearly ran out of vegan meals" is another man's "had the right amount-everyone got fed, and little or no waste".
It's not like it isn't possible to cook more food if necessary.

Perhaps they dont usually stock many vegan meals, and they have had a bit of a run on this mob of late. I dont think they cook them Phil. I cant actually visualise the desk sergeant in a pinny, knocking up cordon bleu meals for the villains. They are more likely to be microwaveable stuff out of the freezer.
If more officers participated in the menopause experiment, maybe they could cook the meals in the hot flush vests.

At any 1 time, there are about 80,000 people in prison, and a further 15,000 on Remand. So an extra 17 is largely an irrelevance.
They don't cook them-I expect they use contract caterers. A single school can (and regularly does) accommodate extra meals without the world ending.
The Police need to stock sufficient numbers of Vegan meals. And do. And always have. However much the Daily Mail tries to pretend otherwise.

I think that the 17 that you keep referring to is only the number they have remanded. There are also those have been arrested and bailed. As the quote was that they have nearly run out of vegan meals over the last couple of months, this cannot only refer to those that have been remanded. As remanding them is a very recent development. You would know better than me, but as a guess, I would suspect that they have been providing vegan meals for those that have been arrested, and held, before being bailed. I expect that there is a limit on the amount of time that they can be held for, without providing them with a meal.
Many of the protestors are being held in jail whilst awaiting their first court appearance, leaving the force scrambling for £1 vegan ready meals.
‘The last couple of months we have come very close to running out of vegan ready meals,’ a police source said.

I dont think any police force has any involvement in prison or school catering. This article seems to refer to ready meals supplied to people held at police stations. The 17 on remand are red herrings.

From the end of September and throughout October, Just Stop Oil staged 32 days of protests, which the Met said resulted in 677 arrests, leading to 111 people charged. According to the group, since its campaign began on 1 April, its supporters have been arrested nearly 2,000 times, with five of its supporters currently in prison.

The police & HM Prison service have an obligation to feed them adequately. I'm not at all sure they have any right to request a particular or specialist meal. If we fall foul of the law, we have to accept the consequences, one of which is we no longer get to choose what we eat.

I expect they do. We are softies. I expect they have to accommodate vegetarians, vegans, and any allergies.
"I expect they have to accommodate vegetarians, vegans, and any allergies".
Allergies, yes, allowance must be made there as it's a health issue, & a potentially serious one. Vegan or vegetarian food, for all their merits, are a matter of choice.
"Here's your meal, eat it or leave it" would be my answer.

I am sure many people would agree with you. Although I dont suppose they would bother stocking vegan meals if they didnt have to.
Archer was only pretending to be a veggie so they would have to give him a special meal. He is playing the system - the same reason why he doesn't wear boots (being anti-leather). He claims to be an atheist to avoid going to church service - avoiding doing what the other inmates do and causing the prison to have to detail an officer to be with him. These little digs at the system are the small victories that allow Archer to feel that the system hasn't crushed his individual spirit. Carlin realizes that Archer is playing the system - he offers him the sausage because he knows that he wants it.

Fundamentally disagree.
A Vegan diet is either due to religious belief, or a strong philosophical belief. Similarly, people are entitled to have kosher or halal food. To refuse to allow such things is wrong. Unless you want to gift such people large amounts of money.
Someone on Remand has not been convicted of anything. It is merely that first the police and second the Courts decided they should be refused Bail pending a Court Case. Which, thanks to most of the Courts having been flogged off, regularly takes 12-18 months before someone may get the chance to prove their innocence.

I'd also give them Izal or Bronco toilet paper too.
That's rough, and it's tough, and it don't take no sh1t off anyone...
