These two are just pawns in a much bigger game of racial grievance... It would take the 'hardest of hearts' to believe that Lady Susan Hussey meant to be racist or to cause harm, writes JAN MOIR
JAN MOIR: Where are you from? Yes, but where are your people from? Slice it or dice it any way you like it, but I can understand why many believe that Lady Susan Hussey (pictured right) was being racist when quizzing Ngozi Fulani (pictured left) at a Buckingham Palace reception this week. Including Miss Fulani herself. Perhaps especially Miss Fulani, who is not well disposed towards the Royal Family anyway, having previously accused them of committing 'domestic violence' against the Duke and Duchess of Sussex (pictured inset). If she disapproves of the Windsor gargoyles so much, if they are such bigots in her eyes, one wonders why she accepted this invitation to BP in the first place.
I always wondered who is asking to touch people's hair. Turns out it's my mum, and it's a compliment from her. But I get that people are sick of it, along with the questions about "where are you really from?". I wonder if asking somebody where their accent is from fits into the same bucket- I sometimes use that as a way to get conversation going.
I'd like to think that this would have been an opportunity to educate and not go running to the media. Some people are perpetually looking for a reason to be offended. There's a polite and friendly way to let an older person know that things have changed and those questions or that terminology is no longer considered appropriate. I know plenty of older people that still use the word coloured, because that was considered appropriate 30-40.
Am Scottish, loads of times when speaking to people from other countries they seem to think am Australian, Ah don't know whether ah should be offend or no.

She changed her name to sound more African.
Isn't that cultural appropriation?
‘Wouldn’t it have been better to highlight ignorance?’
‘Curiosity about culture is not racism, but intention matters’
‘Nasty wolves have pounced on an easy target’
