New power cut fears as wind drops and cold bites: Freezing fog blanketing UK after 'coldest December night in a decade' leaves supplies on a knife-edge
Temperatures hit their lowest point in England for December in almost a decade, it was reported last night, with a low of -8.2C in Benson, Oxfordshire by midnight. A snow warning has been issued for parts of the UK as Arctic conditions caused temperatures to plummet overnight and the Met Office predicts up to six inches of in the coming days. It came as reports suggested households could be alerted to cut electricity usage within days amid rising energy costs and sun and wind levels that will remain low. The National Grid said it is on standby to take 'enhanced actions' to shore up power supplies this weekend as wind levels drop.

'Dreadful consequences', charity warns, as UK's cold snap worsens
People are facing "dreadful consequences", a charity has warned, as parts of the UK face plummeting temperatures.
National Energy Action said more government support is needed for "those at greatest peril" in the below-freezing conditions.
Adam Scorer, the charity's chief executive, said: "Impossibly high prices and now cold weather will leave millions struggling to stay warm and safe at home.
"Our figures show that 6.7 million UK households are fuel poor after energy prices have almost doubled in a year.
"We hear daily from people who are forced to turn their heating off when they need it the most.
"The vicious choice is either huge debt or an unheated home, with dreadful consequences either way.
"We will now start to see just how bleak this winter is going to be."

I had never heard of thundersnow until last year it's quite a thing, I've never heard a noise like it, it woke me up about 3 in the morning, lit up the bedroom, I thought a car or something had been blowin up in the car park.
