Migration has been a hot topic for well over 1000 years. Particularly in England, where nearly all of us are the product of one wave of immigration or another.
The 2018 Convention is largely irrelevant. It adds little to the 1951 Refugee Convention, which was itself just a reworking of the 1933 Convention as a result of the creation of the 1948 Declaration of Human Rights.
We are currently demonising those claiming to flee oppression (asylum seekers) while allowing in far more economic migrants.
We have closed our borders to those fleeing oppression. For example, if this year is like last, 40,000 people arriving on small boats. People so desperate to leave that they give their last £20k to gangmasters, risking their lives.
Meanwhile, net migration to the UK last year was +500,000. 1 million in. 500,000 out. More than 250,000 in were people from families who have a spare £20k (as opposed to their last £20k). So they can get a 3 year Visa to study in the UK. That would be 3 years to do, say, a Nursing Degree (when they will stay) or marry a UK citizen (when, again, they will stay). Not knocking those people-they are just playing the system.
We claim we must curb migration. But, in reality, all we are doing is allowing in those who fancy coming. At the expense of even hearing the case of people who say they need our help.
While deliberately doing precisely nothing to curb 950,000 of those 1 million in.
Just 215 Channel migrants deported from Britain last year
Just 215 of the 45,755 migrants who crossed the English Channel by small boats last year were removed from the country, according to Home Office data obtained under Freedom of Information laws.
More than 25,000 of those were found to be refugees, despite Government claims that the majority of those crossing by small boats are economic migrants. One in five were children.
His primary threat in relation to the next election comes from the Left. But the threats within his own Party come from the (Far) Right Wing of his own Party.
Consequently, he has to pick his battles. So, for example, this last week he was brave enough to row back on the promises in relation to EU Laws. But unwilling to dare stopping picking on people coming over in boats.
Here's a radical thought. If thousands of people are so desperate to flee oppression that they are willing to pay traffickers £10,000 each to risk their lives. How about charging any refugee who has money that sort of money to actually process their application, whether here or abroad.
The bit that amuses me is that the Bravermans/Patels/Rees-Moggs of this world actually believe that the Tories are losing votes because they are not right-wing enough.
Which, IMO, totally misjudges the mood of the Nation. People are sick of austerity for the poor, and different rules for the rich. And, most of all, want to know that they can afford to pay their Bills.
Which is the key driver that Sunak's 5 "promises" ignores.

He is completely failing on these promises, as they are mostly going in the wrong direction.
the prime minister said he would halve inflation, grow the economy, lower national debt, shorten NHS waiting times and stop asylum seekers crossing the Channel on small boats.
My next door neighbour went through an ordeal this week. He is 86, and has got quite frail recently. Cutting a long story short. His nose started bleeding so badly that his wife said their bathroom looked like a slaughterhouse. They didnt feel they could wait for an ambulance. I offered to take him to hospital, but his son was already on his way. He waited for 6 hours in A&E, before seeing a consultant. He decided that he needed to see a more senior consultant. This involved another wait for a further 5 hours. There were no beds available. They eventually found him one, and kept him in overnight. He was sent home the following day, none the wiser as to what caused the problem.
As far as immigration is concerned, I believe that we should be in control. The only way to stop the small boats, is to send them all back. That would immediately stop the people traffickers, and people dying in the channel. At the same time we should put in place legal routes. We should accept a number of genuine asylum seekers per year, although I havent a clue of what that number should be. It is absolutely stupid to have a rule that you can only apply for asylum on UK soil, and then complain when asylum seekers actually arrive.
It will be interesting to see what the Tory Party look like after the next general election. As will the reported voting reforms that Keir Starmer allegedly has in mind, assuming Labour win. I think Labour still has a lot of work to do. The gap in the polls is likely to narrow if Sunak manages to meet his 5 pledges.
There always seems to be 1 Member (at least) of a Cabinet who decides to completely ignore collective responsibility and brief against the Government of which they are part.
Suella Braverman. Not for her the Priti Patel approach of not being in the Cabinet in order to say what she thinks. Or Kemi Badenoch, who may well disagree with stuff, but is clearly aware of the need for outward unity.
Why would anyone employ this person? The only defence she could have in an accusation that she is a backstabber, is that she is a frontstabber...
