Phillip Schofield's lover was just 15 when they met: Schoolboy asked star for job on This Morning three years before he was hired as a production assistant and began affair with the then 50-something presenter - as photos of them together emerge

At the time, the schoolboy asked him for a job, and Schofield later arranged an interview for him. It led to a position as an ITV production assistant when he turned 18. Some time afterwards, their affair began. Last night, as Schofield's 38-year career in television lay in ruins, his This Morning co- presenter Holly Willoughby told of her devastation when she discovered he had lied to her about the relationship. Today, this newspaper can reveal the real reason behind Schofield's extraordinary statement on Friday in which he finally came clean about the relationship and apologised to the Mail for lying. The 61-year-old was forced to confirm allegations of an affair were true because his former lover - who had also worked on This Morning - had unexpectedly confessed all to his lawyers. Schofield had hired top law firm Mishcon de Reya to represent the young man, now in his mid 20s, presumably believing that he would keep quiet. But his former lover - who the MoS has chosen not to name - told lawyers that although he feared exposure, he was fed up lying about the relationship.

ITV crisis deepens as Phillip Schofield's younger ex-lover denies bosses ever quizzed him over the 'unwise' affair despite claims they did after Dr Ranj hits out at This Morning's 'toxic' culture

The fallout from Phillip Schofield's affair with his much younger colleague (pictured right leaving The Ivy Club in 2017) was plunged into further crisis tonight as it was revealed that the host's former lover had not been quizzed by ITV - despite the broadcaster insisting an investigation had taken place at the time. Sources told the Mail the former production assistant insists that 'he was never asked' about the romance, while another ITV insider said: 'Everybody just knew about it.' It comes amid increasing calls for an independent inquiry into the scandal to take place and revelations from former regular guest Dr Ranj Singh (right inset) who branded This Morning's culture as 'toxic'. The TV doctor said he had taken his concerns to 'the top' of ITV but felt he had been 'managed out' as he was dropped from screens, raising yet more questions for executives. He had worked on the show for ten years and had even previously co-hosted it. He left in 2021.

Unbelievable, isn't it? The finger-pointers sat behind their keyboards have been wetting themselves. Think they just enjoy seeing famous &/or wealthy people taken to task, it somehow gives them some sort of sadistic pleasure.

    Exactly this.

Man was unfaithful to his Wife. Denies his sexuality, no doubt for fear it would damage his career. Doesn't tell anyone. Like anyone doing that sort of thing would tell their employer. Ever.

His choice of friends leaves something to be desired. The minute he needs support, Holly Willoughby throws him under the bus. Makes it all about her, conveniently ignoring the simple fact that, right now is the time to know who Schofield's friends really are. His former boyfriend asks him to pay for him to have independent legal advice. He then immediately uses Schofield's money to stick the boot into the person paying for the privilege. Whereas the only person who might have a genuine grievance, his Wife, keeps a dignified silence.

I don't like Phillip Schofield. Never have, never will.

But this puritanical nonsense and pathetic innuendo has absolutely nothing to do with whether he should have a job.

    Agree with all that. ,

I don't particularly like (or dislike) him either, but the current Twitter pile-on is a sight to behold, & it tells us more about the baying mob than it does about Schofield.

I don't think the majority are concerned with PS sexuality most are concerned with the 'alleged' grooming of a 15 year old boy, which puts a totally different spin on things.

    The key word being alleged.

None of us know if that's true or not. In a better society, he's innocent until proven guilty.

After the Police botched the Yewtree Inquiry, even now many are still making accusations against Cliff Richard & Paul Gambaccini even though there were no substance to the allegations. It's wrong that we pre-judge these things when we don't know the facts.

Revealed: Phillip Schofield's This Morning lover 'was paid off by ITV after their affair ended' - as channel bosses face fresh questions about what they knew and why they failed to act

ITV have repeatedly declined to comment on the alleged pay-off or deny it. But a source claims that the money was handed to the man, who, after he declared his love for Schofield at an awards ceremony in January 2020, was shunted to another of the network's daytime programmes. Insiders at ITV say that bosses at some level must have known about any payment as someone senior would have been required to sign it off.

'Fragile' boy at centre of This Morning scandal: How Phillip Schofield's lover 'went to ground' after affair as Eamonn Holmes says he had 'no one to look after him' and would seek 'comfort' in late night calls with him and wife Ruth

'Fragile' boy at centre of This Morning scandal: Schofield's lover was 'alone'
The ex-This Morning host said that the TV producer, who has not been named, was eventually shipped out to Loose Women after getting a promotion 'he didn't ask for'. Speaking to GB News' Dan Wootton, Mr Holmes said that the young man was 'fragile', 'alone' and short of cash after the affair ended, with Eamonn and his wife Ruth giving him extra work to increase his income. Mr Wootton said that the situation was made worse because Schofield's lover was forced to reveal he was gay, which his loved ones had not known. Eamonn also said ITV had failed to have any duty of care for him because 'everything at ITV was geared towards making Phillip and Holly happy. So no one else counted'. Calling the younger man 'lovely', and a 'really good talented fella', he said: 'Ruth and I particularly looked after him, he never once talked to us about any relationship, but we knew he was in a bad way'.

For defamation to be proved surely PS would have to prove that it's untrue?

    In short, no.

The burden of proof falls on the defamer to prove it is true. Which is a very different thing.

So-for example, when people come out and claim he is a paedophile and a groomer, Sky (or whoever) would have to prove that that was true.

Many moons ago I used to give lectures to Trainee Solicitors on Defamation. So-for example-the largest UK Defamation case in the 1970s was Liberace v the Daily Mirror. Where the Mirror failed to provide proof that Liberace was gay. Yes. Liberace.

So Truth v Proof goes out of the window, a bit like FFP in football.
