Robert Fripp
Although Robert Fripp, the founder of King Crimson, is responsible for musical innovations such as Frippertronics, soundscapes, and the so-called “new standard tuning,” he paid his dues by working as a session guitarist for notable musicians such as David Bowie, The Talking Heads, Peter Gabriel, and Blondie for decades.

Chet Atkins
Beginning in the 1940s, Chet Atkins recorded innumerable songs both as a solo performer and as a studio player. He actually established the groundwork for early rock ‘n’ roll with a large portion of the session material he recorded and/or produced in Nashville with musicians like Elvis Presley, Roy Orbison, and the Everly Brothers. Despite being at ease with a variety of musical genres, Atkins is most often linked with country music and the acoustic guitar. Travis, as well as well-known guitarists like Doc Watson, Les Paul, Jerry Reed, and Mark Knopfler, joined Atkins in recording a duo album.
tom morello, clapton and jeff beck, haha, when you start thinking there is just too many.
The Allman Brothers Band was founded and led by Howard Duane Allman, who was able to play with his brother, Gregg Allman. Duane was killed in a motorcycle accident in which his internal organs were destroyed. He died while he was only 24 years old. He was noted for his expressive slide guitar playing as well as his improvisational ability on the instrument. The Allman Brothers’ “Live at the Fillmore East” is widely recognized as one of the best live rock CDs ever recorded.
Paul Kossoff was a highly sought-after guitarist known for his remarkable timing and intricate soloing abilities. He was a guitarist in high demand because of his remarkable timing and complicated ability to solo as a member of the popular band “Free.” Unfortunately, Kossoff began using narcotics at the age of 15. On March 19, 1976, he died of a pulmonary embolism while flying from Los Angeles to New York. When he died, he was only 25 years old.
If you take my personal favourite genre, Metal, then even within that there are so many guitarists with claims to greatness.
Also I think that as time advances the dynamic changes so Hendrix would by todays standards be just another guitarist, however, he was certainly ground breaking and ahead of his time.
Just off the top of my head I can name at least 20 over the decades who could, at some time, have a claim to be the greatest.
From Ry Cooder, through Chet Atkens , Clapton, Hendrix, Blackmore, Jimmy Page, Dave Gilmour and Brian May to Eddie Van Halen, Stevie Vai, Joe Satriani, Kirk Hammet and Slash and the beat goes on.
How about Gary Moore, Chuck Berry, Mark Knoffler, Santana, Nils Lofgren, Randy Rhoades.
What about the Classical and Spanish guitar greats. Paco De Lucia, Segovia, Tomatito or Pepe Romero etc.
Its a minefield of opinion and subjectivity driven by ones own preferences and biases.
Add in Jeff Beck.
Also, Derek Trucks & Warren Haynes.
Have some of this...

I just posted the last, first, and a couple that died very young.
Heres a few more.
Chuck Berry, a rock & roll pioneer, was born in 1926. He passed away in 2017 at the age of 90. Joe Lynch said that “Berry contributed three things to rock music: an irresistible swagger, a focus on the guitar riff as the primary melodic element, and an emphasis on songwriting as storytelling.” Chuck Berry is without a doubt responsible for the current state of rock music.
Rory Gallagher was an Irish vocalist who specialized in blues and rock. More than 30 million copies of his records have been sold around the world. Gallagher died of a failing liver caused by alcohol, opiates, and an MRSA infection on June 14, 1995, at the age of 47. He has influenced a lot of blues guitarists because of how effectively he plays the blues.
Frank Zappa, a nonconforming free-form improviser who died of lung cancer in 1993, was a pioneer of nonconforming free-form improvisation. Zappa was a prolific musician who released more than 60 albums as a solo artist and with his band, Mothers of Invention. Zappa is a self-taught guitarist who is widely considered as one of the twentieth century’s most influential guitarists. Zappa later conducted orchestras and released jazz and classical music CDs in his senior years.
Although you may not think of Prince as a shredder, his guitar playing is enough to make anyone’s mouth drop. Prince was noted for his mastery of a variety of musical genres, including disco, punk, R&B, new wave, soul, pop, and psychedelic music. Prince is one of the most successful musicians of all time, having sold over 130 million CDs to his adoring followers.
Carlos Santana was born in the state of Jalisco in Mexico. He walked onto the Woodstock stage, virtually unknown, and completely wowed the audience. In the 1960s and 1970s, his band Santana grew to notoriety by pioneering a mix of rock and roll and Latin American jazz.
@HAYSIE
I never even considered Prince as anything special on guitar until I saw this track. Skip forward to 3m 30 seconds & then sit back & marvel.

His younger brother, David Knopfler, is a co-founder of the rock band Dire Straits. The number 70 label was dubbed a virtuoso. He is a four-time Grammy winner, a three-time University of Music Honorary Doctor of Music, and a finger-style guitarist. Sultans of Swing is an amazing classic of guitar showmanship from Dire Strait’s first album.
Another member of John Mayall’s Bluesbreakers, Gary Moore, has been dubbed a true virtuoso. He was a solo performer and a member of several bands. As a recording artist, he had eleven solo Top 40 songs in the United Kingdom. He recorded an album with former Cream members Jack Bruce and Ginger Baker in 1993. Moore, who was 58 at the time, died of a heart attack in his sleep in 2011.
Black Sabbath’s Tony Iommi is a founding member. After an accident in a factory where he worked as a teenager, he changed his playing approach. On his right hand, he lost the tips of his middle and ring fingers. He went on to become one of the all-time great rock guitarists.
Joe Satriani has received 15 Grammy nominations. Before becoming a rock hero, Satriani made a fortune as a guitar instructor, even training a young guitarist named Steve Vai at one point. His breakthrough album, Surfing With the Alien, sealed his position as one of the finest instrumental rock guitarists of all time, featuring the classic illustration of Marvel Comics’ Silver Surfer on the cover.
Criticizing guitarists who played with The Yardbirds is tricky. The Yardbirds were made up of simply Eric Clapton, Jeff Beck, and Jimmy Page. Jeff Beck is a remarkable guitar genius whose work spans several genres, including blues-rock, hard rock, and electronica. He has reached the age of 75 and shows no signs of slowing down. He’s recently been seen performing with Johnny Depp at live events.
In the year 1960, Steve Vai was born in Carls Place, New York. At the age of 18, he began his musical career by copying a difficult Frank Zappa song on notebook paper and submitting it to the artist. Zappa mailed a plane to Vai after reading the page, and Vai flew a few to Los Angeles and joined the band. Vai is another virtuoso who has been labeled as an outspoken performer.
