Should attempted murder be allowed in professional sports

DoublemeDoubleme Member Posts: 2,199
After last nights NBA game with Draymond Green trying to choke out Rudy Gobert, people are saying he should never have been ejected, and are feeling he may get an unjust suspension. Like seriously the guy should be in a police cell after what he pulled last night not debating if a suspension should or should not happen.

    Attempted murder?

    Not even on Planet Wuss.

It was a foul. A bad foul. An overreaction to the other player's foul. For which he was rightly ejected.

    The end.

Adam Johnson: Manslaughter arrest made over death of ice hockey player.

Officers investigating the death of Nottingham Panthers player Adam Johnson have made an arrest; he remains in police custody at this time on suspicion of manslaughter.

    https://www.skysports.com/more-sports/ice-hockey/news/12040/13008307/adam-johnson-manslaughter-arrest-made-over-death-of-ice-hockey-player

A man has been arrested on suspicion of manslaughter after Nottingham Panthers player Adam Johnson was fatally injured during an ice hockey match.

Johnson was seriously injured during a game between Nottingham Panthers and Sheffield Steelers on October 28 and was later pronounced deceased in hospital.

A post-mortem examination confirmed the 29-year-old died as a result of a fatal neck injury.

Detective Chief Superintendent Becs Horsfall said: "Our investigation launched immediately following this tragedy and we have been carrying out extensive enquiries ever since to piece together the events which led to the loss of Adam in these unprecedented circumstances.

"We have been speaking to highly specialised experts in their field to assist in our enquiries and continue to work closely with the health and safety department at Sheffield City Council, which is supporting our ongoing investigation.

"Adam's death has sent shockwaves through many communities, from our local residents here in Sheffield to ice hockey fans across the world. We know these communities will expect us to handle this investigation with the same professionalism, fairness and sensitivity as any other and request that members of the public refrain from comment and speculation which could hinder this process. Our thoughts remain with all affected by this devastating incident as enquiries continue."

An inquest into Johnson's death was opened and adjourned on November 3, but Sheffield's senior coroner, Tanyka Rawden, has already called on the sport's governing bodies to take action.

In a Prevention of Future Deaths Report to Ice Hockey UK and the English Ice Hockey Association (EIHA), Rawden said she was "sufficiently concerned that deaths may occur in the future if neck guards or protectors are not worn", with the bodies having 56 days to reply about what action has been taken, or why action has not been taken.

The EIHA said neck guards will become mandatory from 2024, but the Elite League is not under the its control.

The Elite Ice Hockey League, in which the Panthers and Steelers compete, has said it will not make the use of neck guards mandatory but will "strongly encourage" players and officials to wear them following the tragedy.

    Awful debate parameters.

You can't walk down the street and slide tackle someone or shoulder barge them. You can't jab, hook and uppercut someone until a referee stops it in the street. You can't rugby tackle someone.

Sport isn't subject to the same law an ordinary situation is.

    Absolutely.

Over a 30 year period of playing rugby I was involved in and witnessed many punch ups, brawls and other associated skullduggery. If you applied normal law to it, almost every rugby player would be serving a long sentence.

    Completely agree.

There is consent to a wide range of actions, covering all the normal Negligence etc.

There are rare exceptions, where there has been a malicious act. Like Duncan Ferguson's headbutt.

The ice hockey one-was that a terrible accident, or a deliberate act?

I think its all relative I Once had the aspiration to be a professional basketball player and the thing was I was truly exceptional in my day at one specific thing defence. Which does not really count for much when your five foot nine with muscle mass of a 13 year old.

See I was confident that no one could get round me, It was very rare that anyone could or did and even those that did only did so one rare exceptions. However people may or may not know if your feet are moving its not a foul if they charge into you. basically players didnt need to get round me they could run through me and so my aspirations ended. However I am well aware that basketball is a physical game, but there are extents I have whilst going through a loose ball accidently shoved players to the ground and one grazed their knee pretty badly, I did not intend to hurt or even foul him i was just aggressive in going for the ball.

he was rightly very angry though and shoved me and to be fair I could even understand if he had gone further and outright punched me it was a bad foul. regardless of intent. However I could not forgive or understand if the guy tried to choke me out, throat punch me or when I am on the ground full on stamp on my ribs and break three ribs in the process. Aggression is more understandable in sports but Draymond Green frequently exceeds what is justifiable.

man who was arrested on suspicion of manslaughter in the death of American ice hockey player Adam Johnson, whose neck was cut by a skate during a game, was released on bail Wednesday.

Looked like he was catapulted into the air by other player his skates hitting Adam.
They will have slow motion replay to decide can't see how he could have done that deliberately.

Ok, this is I feel creating a dangerous precedent.

Will Valentino Rossi end up retrospectively charged with manslaughter because it was he who ran over a fallen Marco Simoncelli, resulting in Marcos death. One of the more public tragedies of recent years, witnessed live by a global audience of some 10,000,000

Contact sports like auto sports carry an inherent risk. Participants fully and willingly accept that.

All over the world every year cars and bikes crash, rugby scrums collapse, boxers and MMA fighters suffer head injury, cricketers get struck, jockeys fall, and the beat goes on.

Unless it's a deliberate and reckless act surely there's no case to answer.

    What is manslaughter in UK?

Where an unlawful killing is done without an intention to kill or to cause grievous bodily harm, the suspect is to be charged with manslaughter not murder. Apart from the absence of the requisite intent, all other elements of the offence are the same as for murder.

What are the two types of manslaughter in the UK?

Manslaughter falls into two broad categories: involuntary and voluntary. Involuntary manslaughter is unlawful killing without the intent to kill or cause really serious harm and is a common law offence. There are two classes of involuntary manslaughter: unlawful act manslaughter and manslaughter by gross negligence.
