the assessment

So I finally got through to the next stage of an employment application (usually get outright rejected or no response when applying to decent prospect jobs)

and the questions were like in order say which is most like you
A. You enjoy torturing animals
B. your sexually attracted to little children
C. You believe in racial supremacy and race realism

Okay it did not say that this a mild exaggeration but only mild. Okay its a huge exaggeration but my weird sense of humour you know.

the generic point is your given a multiple choice to list in order things where all points are positive and you have to list what is most like you but whatever you leave to last your basically implying is not like you. Eg more accurate portrayal of the questions

A I always make an effort to be on time to work
B I I always make an effort to meet deadlines
C I always double check my work

So If any of those two choices I am implying that the last one is not at all like me which means your left feeling you look bad whichever you choose.

Then they have the negative ones more realistically along the lines of
A I don't take criticism well
B I am quick to point out the flaws in others
C I know how to manipulate other peoples emotions to get what I want.

(this more or less exact question came up saying to describe what is most like me. I went with I dont take criticism well followed by I am quick to point out the flaws in others.)

So thats great i just said I am a passive aggressive **** who will take it personally and be difficult whenever I get constructive criticism, and I am quick to tear other people down.

None of that is true about me but I mean its more true then I manipulate other peoples emotions to get what i want.

anyway pretty sure I failed this one, but how are you ever meant to pass these anyway?

So nothing back yet, this makes little sense since it was an online multi choice assessment. I mean in all honesty I would have expected an instant response on whether I passed or not, if it was a test that asked questions in which people wrote sentences or paragraphs to reply fair enough a person has to look at that and evaluate it. However fully multi choice select online would have thought the pass fail mark would be instantanious.

So I got the rejection email today, its like if I see a maths based assessment or something like that I feel reasonably confident but this trash of multi choice whats most like you and least like you I always fail and it seems just utter nonsense anyway.

You can't "fail" these sorts of tests. They are designed to try and detect what sort of person you really are, and whether that will meet their particular job/Company requirements.

One thing I do remember us that Salesmen are supposed to have strong opinions. So the Setters don't care what peoples views are, just that they are strong ones.

Personally, I think it is all a load of Pony dreamt up by some HR person wanting to make themselves more important than they really are. But, however pointless, it is a necessary hoop to go through.

I was always completely honest in these-because my theory was they either like the real me or, if they don't, I'm going to hate it there...

well I have a zero % record of getting any job after these so I have to assume I am a highly dislikeable charecter then. Not that is something I did not already know.

There is some real nonsense on there like one of the questions said I actively seek friends from different countries.

Well I dont I never have, I have nothing against making friends from different cultures or countries I am not zenophobic or whatever as they have likely assumed of me now.

Its just its utterely irrelevent to me where someone is from in terms of me wanting to be mates with them and hang out.

I just completely dont care its how I get on with them I would think that is the opposite of racism but I am guessing because I put that as lowest they now have this sort of impression of me,

ok copilot wont give me a picture of a guy with swasistika or ku klux khan costume but you get my generic point.

the whole thing seems like a nonsense waste of time.

What Phil said. You can't fail at these things as such but they can be a way to prioritise 100+ applications. If you wouldn't suit the culture of an organisation, they are doing you a favour by not asking you to waste your time preparing for an interview.

These kinds of tests are normal for grad jobs and honesty is key.
  • DoublemeDoubleme Member Posts: 2,142
I think where I most likely failed is they had a lot of questions asking about making friends from other countries, and I always put these last.

I have nothing against making friends from any country, just they might as well have put making friends who are taller then 5 feet 10 or less then 4 feet 9. its utterly irrelevant I make friends with people who I get on with what country they are from is utterly irrelevant. To put it in maths terms their is no correlation between the country someone is from and my desire to make friends with them.

This makes the whole organization come over as politically correct and obsessed with political correctness, I just don't fit in with that.

I mean if people are going to decide I am some sort of racist for this then yeah its probably best I dont relocate half across the country to work there.

Also not been funny but I dont desire to make friends from work, its just more stress, if I have a falling out with a mate or an argument I don't want to be bringing it into work.

I once worked in a place where a girl rightly or wrongly called me dogmatic in my opinions. I said thats not true I used to believe in god and now I dont.

Then apparently this was massively offensive to her because she was Muslim, I had no idea of that but why should that matter?

her and her friend kept calling me racist and ignorant repeatedly after that until I finally snapped and said "that is it I am going to read the Quran from front to back and find every single flaw with it"

then I got in trouble for that, I had no intention of making that effort I was just wound up and when pushed I can be a bit trolly.

But then why the heck should someone say it is offensive to them that I say I do not believe in god and why should I be in trouble for that?

people say to avoid politics religion and sex as topics at work, and I do not disagree with that advice. However if these were friends outside of work that comes into work and I already feel anxious about conversations at work, I dont want to feel anxious about conversations outside of work when i am socialising. So basically I am reluctant to make friends with people from work.

Just criticising the process wont get you anywhere.

I spent the majority of my working life involved in recruitment.
I remember a guy coming to see me, to sell me the benefits of psychometric testing.
I dont believe that there was anyone in the world that was more sceptical than me regarding stuff like this.
I thought it could only be absolute bullsh1t.
The actual questions would be what you would describe as nonsense.

    The guy was very confident.
In the end I agreed to go along with a test of my existing workforce.
I agreed that if the test results matched their performance, I would employ the services of the testing company.
    It did.
    I did.
From that day forward I wouldnt have been without it.
I regarded the £4k per annum, a lot of money at the time, as money well spent.

Directing your efforts into finding someone that can help you through the process, will be more beneficial than just criticising it.
If the employers have a round hole, you have to at least appear to be a round peg, rather than just be adamant that you are a square peg, and never get a job.

    When interviewing candidates I always used the old-fashioned system - I looked for;

    Eye contact

    Firm handshake

    Clean shoes

Well-presented (clothes). Not necessarily expensive, but looked like they made an effort to be presentable.

    Good manners.

Well-prepared - e.g. have a list of prepared questions they want to ask.

I'd really like to say that resulted in excellent staff, but I'd be lying, as over the years I think I recruited pretty badly overall.

A quick glance on the forum will provide evidence of a supposedly mature adult, that inanely posts a vast number of Bear, and Sponge Bob photos all over the shop.
I am sure that you must realise that very few people will find this entertaining, interesting or humorous.

Not unless he is applying for a job at his local Build-A-Bear Workshop.
Which if he is,then he's pretty much nailed on for the position...

well seems a moot point i need to get an interview first, before I could have a chance to mention sky poker or sky poker forums. Would be weird to mention it on my cv or covering letter, mind you would be weird to mention at an interview either.

I generally prefer to avoid mentioning my poker alias at work. Once people know they can look up my results which is fine I am a profitable player but then I get either some form of anti gambling comment when i run bad, or the well I see you have been doing well your buying drinks etc when I win.

When I had the accounting job @Tikay10 mentioned if I am allowed to in reference to the SPT. not sure if he meant if I could get the time of work or if he meant they had an anti gambling clause in their contract etc?

I have been told that poker is something I should never mention to any employer. I think for accounts jobs this is definitely true, for actuary or analysis jobs I would expect they would know enough about statistics to recognise I could be profitable at poker and if they looked at my results see that I am profitable at poker. That been said it just does not seem like a good idea to mention around any work place.

In regards to build a bear I dont know I definitely could not to do so in my local build a bear, long story and wont go off topic with it but one of the street performers absolutely hates me, this isn't just my negative assumption he regularly posts stuff saying how much he hates me on facebook. I can't work in one of the shops in the same town he performs in it will lead to regular conflict unless he succeeds in getting me fired could do without that aggro.

maybe though if I moved somewhere else I would enjoy working at build a bear if they just want me to be silly, like me giving voices and personalities to the teddies and etc it may actually be a job I enjoy. i doubt the pay would be good mind.
