Behind the Winter Palace, & in front of the Defence Buildings (which are in the photo background) is Alexander's Column. It's nothing short of a miracle.
It is 3.5 metres in diameter & 25 metres high & is a single piece of red granite which was transported from Finland in 1832 & erected manually, without the use of cranes or any other mechanised equipment. It's not affixed to the ground in any way, it's completely free-standing.
