This really is the most ghastly - & completely avoidable - humanitarian disaster of my lifetime.

And yet most of the Western world have happily supplied/sold arms to the Israelis, the Russians & Iranians to Hamas I guess, and the the world took no notice & just allowed it all to happen.

Imagine the deprivation those Gazans are enduring, & then try to imagine it happening here in the UK. We can't, can we? We are too busy worrying about parking tickets wrongly issued or finger pointing at lifesaving legends like Sir Chris Whitty. Without his input, many of us would not still be here.

What is Unrwa and why has Israel banned it?

Israel's parliament voted on Monday evening to ban the UN's Palestinian refugee agency (Unrwa) from operating within Israel and occupied East Jerusalem.

Contact between Unrwa employees and Israeli officials will be banned, crippling its ability to operate in Gaza and the Israeli-occupied West Bank.

Almost all of Gaza's population of more than two million people are dependent on aid and services from the agency.

The move has faced widespread condemnation, with Unrwa warning the new law could see aid supply chains "fall apart" in the coming weeks.

Israel has defended the move, repeating its allegation that a number of the agency's staff were involved in Hamas's 7 October attacks last year, which killed 1,200 people.

However, Israel's opposition to Unrwa also goes back decades.

What is Unrwa and what does it do?
Founded in 1949, the Relief and Works Agency for Palestine Refugees, or Unrwa, works in Gaza, the West Bank, Syria, Lebanon and Jordan, initially caring for the 700,000 Palestinians who were forced from or fled their homes after the creation of the state of Israel.

Over the decades, Unrwa has grown to become the biggest UN agency operating in Gaza. It employs some 13,000 people there and is key to humanitarian efforts.

It is funded primarily by voluntary donations by UN member states, with the UN itself providing some direct funds.

It distributes aid and runs shelters and key infrastructure - such as medical facilities, teacher training centres and almost 300 primary schools.

Since the war in Gaza began, the agency says it has distributed food parcels to almost 1.9 million people. It has also offered nearly six million medical consultations across the enclave over the course of the conflict.

More than 200 Unrwa staff have been killed in Israeli attacks since October 2023 in the course of those duties, according to the agency.

    why did israel ban Unrwa

Israel recently banned the United Nations Relief and Works Agency (UNRWA) from operating in East Jerusalem and prohibited Israeli authorities from having any contact with the agency. This decision was driven by several factors:

Accusations of Bias: Israeli lawmakers have long accused UNRWA of having an anti-Israel bias and claimed that some of its staff members have ties to militant groups like Hamas.

Security Concerns: Following the October 7, 2023, attack on Israel by Hamas, an investigation found that some UNRWA staff members were involved. This heightened security concerns and led to the ban1.

Legislative Actions: Israeli lawmakers passed a law in October 2024 that banned UNRWA from operating in Israel and prohibited state authorities from interacting with the agency.

The ban has raised significant concerns about the humanitarian impact on Palestinian refugees who rely on UNRWA for education, healthcare, and other essential services.

It's a complex and sensitive issue with far-reaching implications. What are your thoughts on this development?

as usual id expect these details to be left out by the bbc to create a picture of Israel as just pyschotic unreasonable demons who have the attitude of Freiza from dragon ball.

However I should be able to expect better from others.

No 10 indicates Netanyahu faces arrest if he enters UK

French foreign minister Jean-Noel Barrot has told the BBC that the ICC’s decision “is the formalisation of an accusation, it is by no means a judgement”.

He told the Sunday with Laura Kuenssberg show: “We also say that we’ve condemned, in [the] strongest possible terms, the fact that humanitarian help has not been able to reach civil populations in Gaza while the situation is catastrophic.

“But in no way do we draw any form of equivalence between the Hamas leaders that have been targeted by arrest warrants by the ICC and the government of Israel.”

International Criminal Court arrest warrants for Israeli leaders

Starvation as a weapon of war
One of the key allegations was the "use of starvation as a weapon of war".[27][28][29][30][31] The use of starvation as weapon of war is banned by the United Nations.[32] Since then it was used in both Gaza and Sudan.[33] In mid 2023 German government officials also accused Russia of using hunger as a weapon.[34][35] Yoav Gallant made a public speech in early October 2023, shortly after the Hamas attacks on Israel that sparked the war, saying, ‘there will be no more electricity, no more food, no more fuel … We are fighting against human animals and will behave accordingly’.[36][37][38] A few weeks before that the arrest warrants were issued, there were also reports of looting occurring in areas controlled by the IDF.[39][40]

International Unrwa staff leave as Israel’s ban on activity takes effect

Despite repeated claims by Israel that Unrwa had been infiltrated by Hamas on a large scale, a series of investigations, including one led by the former French foreign minister Catherine Colonna, found some “neutrality-related issues” at Unrwa but stressed Israel had not provided evidence for its headline allegation.

What strikes me about your post, is that assuming the Israeli Government knows the highlighted bit is true, then they will obviously have evidence, and know exactly who the guilty parties are.
The UNWRA staff are charity workers, that provide medical treatment, education for children, other social services, as well as food and water for the Palestinians.
So they are based in schools, medical centres, offices, or in trucks that cross borders.
Wouldnt you therefore think that the Israeli Authorities would find it very easy to arrest any of those that are guilty?
And if there was real proof they would have publicised it.

The reporting in relation to the conflict has not been balanced. As examples:-

    1. When Hamas carried out a mass targeted attack in October 2023, they massacred innocent civilians in order to get to what they believed were their targets. Israel does exactly the same. As an example, they are quite blase about the fact that if they believe there are 10 Hamas fighters beneath a Hospital, they will deliberately bomb the hospital and kill the innocent sick. For the avoidance of doubt, I find both repulsive.

    2. We get detailed reporting on the release of Israeli hostages. We get told how many were in the Army and who were Civilians-quite surprising how many were in the Army. We receive no details whatsoever in relation to the Palestinians released. Are only 1 set newsworthy?

    3. We report the (to my mind disgraceful) attitude of many Hamas and Hezbollah leaders who want a "single state" solution-where Jewish people are driven from the Middle East. Yet we do not report the similar fact that the Majority of the current Israeli Govt also propose a single state solution-where Palestinians are driven from the area.

Nobody can justify the Hamas attack, nor the Israeli response.
A solution seems as far away as it ever has been.

Cannot "justify". But these things have not happened in a vacuum.

The Hamas attack did not happen as an isolated incident. There have been large numbers of smaller-scale actions prior to the attack. But it is undoubtedly true that it was a major escalation. The murder of 1,200 people, many of which were civilians. Terrible.

Similarly, there was always going to be a response from Israel. The various assassinations of Hamas and Hezbollah leaders was always going to happen. What was unexpected was the sheer scale of the attacks, particularly (but not exclusively) in Gaza. In Gaza alone, nearly 50,000 killed, of which over 10,000 were children. Hundreds of thousands forced from their homes. It is the massive impact upon civilians that appals me.

I just don't get why 1 side's escalation is uncalled-for, while the other's is supposedly necessary.

Palestine and Gaza deserve better. Israel deserves better
