The reporting in relation to the conflict has not been balanced. As examples:-
1. When Hamas carried out a mass targeted attack in October 2023, they massacred innocent civilians in order to get to what they believed were their targets. Israel does exactly the same. As an example, they are quite blase about the fact that if they believe there are 10 Hamas fighters beneath a Hospital, they will deliberately bomb the hospital and kill the innocent sick. For the avoidance of doubt, I find both repulsive.
2. We get detailed reporting on the release of Israeli hostages. We get told how many were in the Army and who were Civilians-quite surprising how many were in the Army. We receive no details whatsoever in relation to the Palestinians released. Are only 1 set newsworthy?
3. We report the (to my mind disgraceful) attitude of many Hamas and Hezbollah leaders who want a "single state" solution-where Jewish people are driven from the Middle East. Yet we do not report the similar fact that the Majority of the current Israeli Govt also propose a single state solution-where Palestinians are driven from the area.
Nobody can justify the Hamas attack, nor the Israeli response. A solution seems as far away as it ever has been.
Cannot "justify". But these things have not happened in a vacuum.
The Hamas attack did not happen as an isolated incident. There have been large numbers of smaller-scale actions prior to the attack. But it is undoubtedly true that it was a major escalation. The murder of 1,200 people, many of which were civilians. Terrible.
Similarly, there was always going to be a response from Israel. The various assassinations of Hamas and Hezbollah leaders was always going to happen. What was unexpected was the sheer scale of the attacks, particularly (but not exclusively) in Gaza. In Gaza alone, nearly 50,000 killed, of which over 10,000 were children. Hundreds of thousands forced from their homes. It is the massive impact upon civilians that appals me.
I just don't get why 1 side's escalation is uncalled-for, while the other's is supposedly necessary.
Palestine and Gaza deserve better. Israel deserves better
