Insults in the chat box - Is it better to turn player chat off?

Do you respond to them? My head tells me not to but i hate to say it but sometimes i get drawn in. It's amazing how many poker coaches there are in the lower levels. Some people are so good that they want to play everyone elses hand as well as their own. Their impromptu coaching sessions are laughable for the majority of the time. I'm sure a lot of us will have endured them at some point. However a lot of the time their stats don't back up the opinions they so forcefully try to impose on you. Then there's the other type of player who will just type mindless abuse again being critical of your play or complaining about a hand that they lost 5 minutes ago. Even if a player was of really low standard surely they should encourage them to continue playing on their table rather than abusing them? I think maybe i've just been unlucky recently by regularly running in to these type of people.

Something i've always wondered that maybe some of you guys can answer for me is, does this behaviour exist at the higher stakes tables? Does it happen in live games? Or is confined to lower stakes online games?

How do you respond to trash talk at the table? Is it better to turn off player chat?

     I PERSONALLY IGNORE THE MINDLESS DONKS BUT I WOULD NOT TURN OFF CHAT BECAUSE A MAJORITY ARE DECENT PEOPLE TO CHAT TOO, SO MY ADVICE IS KEEP CHAT ON AND ONLY TALK TO THE DECENT ONES AND IGNORE THE DONKS BECAUSE THEY WANT YOU TO RESPOND AND TRY AND PUT YOU OFF TILT. IF THEIR OVER ABUSIVE THOUGH YOU NEED TO REPORT THEM !

    Firstly, in direct answer to your headline, it's entirely up to you! If it affects your game then simply turn it off!
    Don't get drawn into trading insults, I usually find "lol" or "nice" or making a tongue in cheek remark when they make a play similar to the one they complained about earlier (and they will, I can assure you!) will usually do the trick! You can actually make friends with people by doing that! lol
    If you're particularly affected by someone's remarks or feel that they have gone too far, then you can report this abuse and Sky will look into it (there are icons for you to do this quickly and easily).
    Does it happen live? yes but rarely because there's a chance that they'll get a slap and they're not usually that big or clever in person!
    Does it happen at higher levels? Again, yes it does, although it does decrease the higher you go, generally. Although I haven't been to the highest levels so I can't really comment on those!
    The thing is, if they are abusing you, then you must be annoying them and that, my friend, is the best opponent you could wish for because their chips will soon become your chips!!!!

     I have noticed I get most advice how bad a player I am off the 60p and 30p Dym players which is strange because I never see these players when Im playing on 3 & 5 pound tables which I do ok on! To these people I always say TY and give them a :) It is no point arguing with these people because they "know" they are right!
     Some people report them and get them chat ban but personally I think they are fun and often you can use the fact they think you are an "idiot" against them its a case of not letting them wind you up!
     The other type is the sore loser in MTTs those I just ignore and if they dont go a way I just switch the chat box to Info for a while!

    I have come across a few of these types of players.  One in Particular, who is very abusive. I have discussed his rants with other's (Through PM's) about wether he should be reported.  I've decided not to.  What I do is be VERY, VERY POLITE to him......  IT DRIVES HIM MAD.

    Him "YOU F *** ING IDIOT>>> HOW CAN YOU MAKE THAT CALL"

    Me  "You're quite right Sir  That was indeed an incredibly idiotic Call.  I don't know what I was thinking about and it was incredibly fortuitous that I ended up with all your chips.  It is a great relief that I earn SO MUCH money that I don't really care if I play well or not"  

    Hs reaction to this was very amusing ;o)  I just don't know if using the "F" word thirteen times in the one sentence is grammatically correct

    In my opinion it is never a good idea to entertain abusive players or to respond in kind.

    Mind you it's not always easy to take the higher ground in these situations so if you are feeling especially frustrated it's probably wise to close chat down for an hour or so.  

    Eventually they run out of steam or someone else (in my case everyone else!) will tell them they are being unreasonable or point out their bad play (As Digsy said) and then they will either leave the table, stop the abusive behavior and apologise or in most cases they will actually calm down and want to get involved in the normal table banter.

    TBH I can brush off any amount of 'F' words in the chat box.. It's the  'THANK YOU' after they've just sucked out on me that will put me firmly on TILT! ;)

    Their is one player I have played against in the early hours of the morning that as more advise than Simon Cowell. Its quite obvious they have a chat ban because I played them the other night and not a word was uttered but in my mind I could see them ripping their hair out in frustration! :)

    i have found that there is alot more mindless insults and abuse at the freeroll and micro stake levels

    its annoying but i like diggerman's post he sums this up perfectly
