A mini rant!

Apologies if this subject's already been discussed on the forum...

While researching this week's edition of 'The Rail', I came across the story of Abraham Korotki - the man who recently won the Ladies' NLHE Event at the Borgata Open in Atlantic City.

Yes, a man entered the Ladies' Event!  He was legally entitled to play, because casinos aren't allowed to discriminate according to gender.

I don't know if someone put him up to it.  Maybe it was a practical joke.  Maybe he lost a bet.  Maybe he was trying to prove a point.  Personally, I think it's a bit sad and pathetic.

Casinos host these tournaments because they know there are many women who feel uncomfortable playing in a testosterone-fuelled environment.  Live poker is still a male-dominated game and, sadly, some of the guys at the tables display despicable levels of misogyny - be it the middle-aged bloke who has a derogatory nick-name for his wife and thinks Jim Davidson is funny, or the young nerd whose only contact with women involves surfing the Internet for dodgy pics.

Does anyone in the Sky Poker Community have an issue with ladies-only tournaments?  Is there a bloke out there who'd be willing to "do a Korotki"?

    Hi James

Personally I dont have a problem with Lady only tournaments BUT (and isn't there always a but lol) if you are going to run lady only games then I feel that there must also be MEN only games as well because I feel that to do otherwise would be discriminatory.

Afterall as you say women are often put off by the testosterone- fuelled environment but equally some men who want to let their hair down at the poker tables and maybe tell a few risque jokes are put off from doing so by the presence of ladys at the table.

I think women are just looking for a level playing field and I certainly don't think a few men entering a women's tournament would put the women off for the following reasons:

    1. The women would still be in a considerable majority so could easily gang up on any men stupid enough to step out of line with any ill advised comments.

    2. Most decent women players say they find it easier to play against men than other women.

    3. Most men are complete cowards and the Jim Davidson fan club types you mentioned above wouldn't have the balls to enter a women's tournie and act like d**kheads because they wouldn't have the back-up of their mates at the table.

Ultimately, women's tournies are good if they do encourage more women into the game as it is still a male dominated arena, but mixed events are the healthy future we should be striving for and women's only events should eventually be phased out once an equal number of men and women are playing this great game of poker.

i think the era of "ladies" has come and gone, what we see now are a huge number of ladettes-eg liv boeree,m orpe etc who feel very comfortable in a rowdy atmosphere,we aren't talking audrey hepburn here,  i would imagine the majority of women getting into poker now are pretty much as capable of being foul mouthed as the men at the end of the day so the excuse of feeling uncomfortable doesn't really convince.

As far as the bloke who enterned the ' ladies only' tourny, he is extremely sad but un4ortunaly not on heard of!!

Even tho the game is getting better 4 us ladies, men STILL  see us a the weaker s ex (incuding poker), but how far from the truth.
we r NOT weak and we r NOT dumb, we r just very good at playing it and using whatever tools we have 2 our advantage,

Personally I prefer playing men 2 women, not only are men more easy 2 manipulate, there more easy 2 read,if they hit they cant help but showing how clever they r by raising whereas women are more sneaky and will wait then destroy.
Also longplay is right , the 'term' ladies has changed. We are no longer frail, petite and fragile things, we can handle ourselves and give as good as we get and a few 'blue' jokes wont hurt us in the slightest.

Men think we r easy prey....we say bring it on!!!

(sorry if ive offended the guys here - just being truthful)
(any women who read this plz dont lynch me 4 giving away our secrets just thought the men might need a bit of help....HEHEHEHEHE)

This is the beauty of poker, no matter what size/age/race/ or male or female... you are all on an equal par to each other, Look at the best in the world, you have a 20 yr old Girl Annette, and a 100+ yr old player Doyle Brunson, both equally (although differently) talented. I personally love playing with the women. Nice to see they take an interest in the game if only my mrs did :( ... but you get an excuse to stare into their eyes ;-) ha ha

    Hi peeps

I have to agree 100% with Flash and Fallen on this, but am also aware that there may be females out there who do feel uncomfortable playing men, I do not feel it helps with the perception of the female being the "Weaker S ex" something which I do not hold too, and think that Education is changing the way of thinking is and has taken place over the years, but, unfortunately there are still those who will not accept this, but we have to keep going until we get there.

Hopefuly Annette clinching a major title will encourage more females into the game, and also feel less intimidated of the male opponent.

I get bullied alot....I am being bullied now (well he tried).... and yes Ive been told that Im a weak player, but im not (usually by men trying 2 intimidate me) I just play dumb and set a trap which normally works so im the one whos laughing in the end.

I understand that some women feel intimidated, poker is still very much a mans game and if u show weakness there eat u alive....Im sorry 2 say that if a woman wants 2 play poker she has 2 toughen up!!

I DONT HATE MEN REALLY x

Not me as I am not single. But if I was.. get in! I would be there in a shot lol Women who love poker -  R E S U L T!

On a serious note I think it's fair enough to have womens' events. Gives any women who do feel intimidated the chance to play in a more favourable atmosphere. Plus if any men find the men intimidating they can go play in the womens' event too! It also promotes the game to a wider audience and the more new players that come to poker the better.
