The venue is putting on a £50 NLHE Freezeout at 8pm in place of their normal £15 game, expecting that this will appeal to their many Sky Poker Tour visitors that weekend.

That should swell the numbers at Alea then, what a ridiculous decision, they don't even run midweek tournaments any more as they don't get enough runners!
I hope they give a decent structure for such a high buy in

A bit presumptious of them to think that. Or maybe I am in the minority that something in region of £20 game would have been more appealing
Think we will give it a miss and play at Alea on Fri night.
As a railer i was looking forward to playing the £15 freezeout, but £50 is a little too steep for my Bankroll at present so i'll probally do the same as TRIP5.
I have to be honest I was thinking of playing the £15 game in preperation for the main event but £50 is just way too steep for a first time live player.

One possible reason. Another would be they know there will be a huge turnout on a Friday before a SPT and want extra juice. But they run a business after all so you can't blame them.
Would it not be an idea to run their normal £15 tournament (they have regulars after all) and also the £50 freezeout, then they cater for everybody and it's a sound business decision as well
It's not a business decision at all, I discussed it with them and mentioned that the Fri night comp the night before SPT Luton example, at £75 was very popular, which it was. 35-40 Sky players played that
I thought the same would apply for Leeds, and they decided to try a £50 event.
Can't please all players, obviously, but I thought it was a reasonable decision considering who might be there on the Friday...many experienced Sky players will be looking for a good game with a good prizepool

I appologise for being wrong Rich. And yes a lot of players going would want a bigger tournament. If I was going I would. It's just the 2nd SPT in a row that have upped their Friday tourney the night before the SPT (Luton was the 100 pounder). But I totally accept Luton were planning to change their schedule months in advance of the SPT and what you have explained above. Sorry once again, I'm probably just still sore-headed about missing out on this SPT.

If we look throughout the SPT forum, Leeds is full of new live players and players asking if friends and relatives can come. Looking at the list of qualifiers I don't see that many Sky "big guns"
The Grosvenor Leeds cannot be compared to G casino Luton, they are miles apart in quality of game and quality of management, the Grosvenor Leeds are not even running a tournament most nights as their customer base has left them when they went through 2 management changes and basically gave up on poker a couple of months ago. In Leeds, a good game and a good prizepool is at Gala!
Personally a mid priced game at perhaps £20 would be perfect, just like at Aspers in Newcastle, then the whole community that descends on Leeds the night before can be involved, the other solution for me is to run a £15 freezeout and a £50 freezeout then we all get to stay in the same place.
Just my thoughts based on playing in Leeds over the past 3 years and knowing the clientele of the Grosvenor and it's competitiors, ultimately the Grosvenor will decide but there are plenty of alternatives.

thanks Dave, you seem to be a persuasive man :-) Posted by SPT
Not really, I suggested they run both the 15 and 50 as two different tournaments as I totally agree with you that there are enough Sky tour regulars wanting a 50 quid game!
I think they are concious that if they did run a 50 quid buy in game it would ONLY have been Sky players, the regulars want the cheaper game, for the bigger game they go to Gala. They tried to compete with Gala 6 months ago and failed to sustain the good numbers they were getting.
With the combination of having a great social scene at Sky and quite a few "first time live players" coming and the "regulars" voice I think they are correct to keep the buy in low but I was never against a 50 quid buy in, just wanted them to cater for the lower bankrolls!!

There is only 1 tournament to play on the Friday - the £15 freezout which is their regular Fri game, they have decided not to run the £50 game. Should make your decision easier )

Will probs go to the Alea on Fri and come meet up with everyone on the Saturday
Probs really good for the bigger BR players though who wouldn't find much value in playing £20.00 freezeout...
