First game today was a £5.75 Bounty Hunter. I knew it wasn’t going to be my tournament when my pocket JJ lost to 86o in the very first hand. I eventually went out without having won a single pot when my flush draw and overcard couldn’t improve against top pair.

After that I jumped straight into a small £2 rebuy which I managed to win. I feel I played well and my opponents weren’t too tough. Going into heads-up play I had a 3/2 chip deficit, but my opponent wasn’t very strong HU and I turned it around quite easily. The winning hand was QQ>86s, I trapped by checking when my opponent limped from the SB with only a few blinds left, planning to check/shove any flop. It did the trick when he bet/called with a small piece of the board.

Meanwhile my third and final game, a £3 freezeout which was another event in the Forum Olympics had already started. I thoroughly enjoyed this tournament. It made a very welcome change to sit at tables with many of my fellow forum regulars. With even more on the rail supporting their team mates there was plenty of friendly banter and the game was played in a great spirit. By keeping it tight I managed to make a run all the way to final table despite being dangerously short several times; as low as 6BB at one point in the mid-stages. My exit came when I opted to call an open-shove with pocket 88 and 11BB behind on the big blind. It was a standard flip against AQ, but it didn’t go my way this time. My small cash was welcome bonus, but I have to say the fun I had at the tables more than made the buy-in more than worthwhile even if I’d left with nothing.

I didn’t get online until quite late this afternoon so had very little time for poker. If you take out satellites not many MTTs run in the afternoon, I had to jump into the first game going which was a £2.30 Bounty Hunter with a small field. It was going well until my AQ came off second best against 33 on an A3x flop just after we broke to final table.

After that I squeezed in a few quick micro HU STTs; won 4 lost 3.

Not my day today. I played quite a few MTTs, but a series of coolers, lost flips and beats ensured I didn’t win much back.

After a rotten afternoon the highlight of the day came in evening when I had a run to 22nd/340 in the Mini Bounty Hunter. It was only a min-cash, but nonetheless pleasing after a series of unfortunate busts in the afternoon.

My ‘what if’ moment in the Mini came with 30 left. Holding pocket 77 on the button with 14BB behind I was happy to get it in against any single action, but there was a raise and a shove before my turn to act. I reluctantly folded my pair, though as it turns out it would have given me a treble-up against 33 and AJ. Had I known the hole-cards it’s a snap call. However, without being results orientated, I think my fold was probably correct in the long run.

    (down £1.55 today)

I didn’t get online until mid-afternoon today. The usual afternoon lack of choice severely restricted my options with the only suitable game running being a £2.30 Bounty Hunter. A promising start came to a crashing end when my AK was no use against a calling station with JTo who managed to flop a made straight to crack my TPTK.

    At 3-20pm I looked for my next game. There were 14 NLHE MTTS visible in the lobby. This is what I saw;

10x satellites, all to evening games and of no interest to me
    1x 15 minutes timed tournament
    1x freeroll
    1x ‘scary’ freezeout
    1x ‘speed’ rebuy

So there was not a single freezeout or bounty tournament with a regular structure available. Reluctantly I ended my session and switched to another site. Sky is my favourite place to play and I always look here first. Unfortunately over the last few months there’s been a switch of emphasis to satellites and timed tournaments at my preferred playing times. I can understand Sky’s strategy; satellites are great rake earners. But when the sort of games I’m looking for aren’t here I have no choice but to go elsewhere.

First up today was the 10-45 Bounty Hunter. Early double-ups gifted to me by disbelieving opponents when I held KK and AA gave me the chiplead after an hour. But things went pear-shaped approaching the bubble; I couldn’t get away from my pocket 88 on a 79TJ rainbow board. My opponent held KQ for a harsh straight over straight cooler.

A level 1 double-up and head-prize gave me a flying start in the 1-30 £5.75pm Bounty Hunter. From there things went downhill, I was at a difficult table with wild gamblers and unable to make a hand. Late on a double-up off a light caller me a chance, but I was doomed to go out on the bubble in sickening fashion. My cold 4-bet re-shove with AA lost to a cold caller with 88 aipf, the beat deprived me of a head-prize, a finish in the money and the biggest stack at my table. Not much fun after an hour and 50 minutes of careful play.

It must be nice to run like that; I’d seen the same guy win a 4-way aipf hand much earlier in level 2 with K6s, taking head-prizes from 2 of the other 3 all-in players in the process. Maybe my turn with the ‘boomswitch’ will come one day.

These pesky £5.75 Bounty Hunters continue to be the Achilles heel of this quest, I’ve run terribly in them ever since my bankroll was sufficient to let me buy-in. I’ve now played 117. Despite making 31 final tables I’m still awaiting that elusive first win.

That was it. I wanted to play another MTT, but the now usual mid-afternoon problem applied; the lobby was full of nothing but satellites to evening games.

Glad to hear that, very well played. I couldn't get away from my hand there when I turned the straight with effective stacks being less than 25BB deep. I knew KQ was in your range when I got it in, but it was a chance I had to take.

    Doomswitched.

I was home from work just in time for the 9-45 Bounty Hunter today. Running pocket KK into AA and AK in a 3-way aipf hand left me with only 400 chips in level 2. A treble-up with 56s then a double-up with a set of 8s brought me back into the game. Though it was in vain; after an hour of play I made a poor call with KT on a dry king high flop to bust. It was a mistake on my part, my opponents bet sizing should have made me realise I was beaten and lay my hand down.

In the 10-45 after a slow start (I was below starting stack for the first hour) I went on a bit of a run. A blind vs blind double with AJ>A9s kicked it off. From there I chipped up nicely and found myself up to 2/20 taking a couple of head-prizes on the way. I thought it was going a bit too good to be true, and it was. Once again I was afflicted by a dose of late stages run-bad. First I took a big hit with TT<A4 aipf. Then I went out in a flip when I jammed my QJs from the SB into the BB who called with 88 to finish 13/84 with 10 to be paid. The QQT flop was great for me, the inevitable 8 on the river not so great.

My poor form in crucial flips continued when I bubbled a satellite to the £750 Bounty Hunter with AK<TT aipf for a pot that would have locked up a seat. I thought about buying-in direct, but with confidence a bit low at the moment decided against it.

I tried a £5.75 next. After losing out in early skirmishes I got it in 3-ways with my AK against A3 and A3. I had one of the callers covered but I couldn’t dodge a 2-outer; a 3 fell on the flop to deny me (more than) a double-up and a head-prize.

After that I lost 3/3 £3.15 HU matches after managing to find an opponent in ‘god mode’ who could not be beaten. When my A5 lost to 92 on an A25 flop in the third game for all the chips I finally took the hint that no matter what I did I wouldn’t be winning anything and quit for the day.

In my first game I enjoyed a pleasing to the final table of the 9-45 Bounty Hunter. I ran well to get there, busting short opponents with A5s>TT aipf and AQ>AK aipf to give me the chiplead approaching the bubble. A big set-back then cost me my lead and made the rest of the tournament an uphill battle; my A9 failing to hold against an open-ended straight draw on a 9-high rainbow flop. My exit came with A2s<J7o aipf. I was on the big blind with only 11BB, the chipleader on the button was opening any two cards, so I reshoved my suited ace and hoped for the best. He spiked a 7 on the turn to send me out in fifth.

In the 10-45 I spent the entire game at a frustrating bingo table. After an early dent with JJ<T5o aipf to double a shortie I enjoyed a full treble-up when my AJ held-up on an ace-high flop against two flush draws. That gave me a brief spell as chipleader, though finding myself devoid of good cards while others around me engaged in wild aipf gambling meant I’d slipped below average by the hour mark. My demise came when down to 19BB I took on a bingo maniac with a huge stack who donk-shoved into me on the flop. My suited ace had flopped every draw in the book; flush draw, open-ended straight draw, two overcards. Despite being a mathematical favourite I couldn’t improve and his K5o held-up with nothing more than the 5 he’d hit on the flop.

Despite recent bad experiences I had another crack at a £5.75. It started well with AQs>TT giving me a double-up and a head prize. But then the jinx kicked in again; in a 3-way aipf pot (one of them a very short stack) my AJ lost to the KJ of the second biggest stack in the pot. Soon after that my open-raise with AQs was flatted by 98 and the flop came down QJT lol. That left me very short and ready to double-or bust forthwith. To my surprise it was a double with pocket 99, soon followed by a treble-up with AT outdrawing two under-pairs aipf. That put me back up to average, but I had to tighten up when I got moved to a bingo table, including a maniac who was going aipf every hand. He survived until level 8 and took 3 head prizes. With 19 left I lost 75% of my stack with KK<JJ lol (the board ran out 89QT4). Down to only 8BB I couldn’t find a way back, my exit came with 55<KK aipf, no miracle cards for me.

Unsurprisingly it confirmed I’m still running terribly in £5.75s; that’s now 119 games and counting.

By now it was only mid-afternoon. I wanted to play another game but with no MTTs of interest due to run on Sky for an hour I opted to play on another site.

Great to see you're getting really close to your target Gary. I know there's still some way to go, but you're a very good player, and one decent bink could take you a big chunk of the way there.

Very impressive to see your discipline and steady progress. Will be quite an acheivement when you finally get there.

My only deepish run of the day came in a £5.75 Bounty Hunter in which I busted in 17th/71. Though to be honest I’m not quite sure how I even got that far, I could neither pick-up nor make a hand and spent the entire tournament well below average. My exit came when I found a great squeeze-shove spot with KQs and 12BB behind on the SB. There was a 2.5x open and two flat callers, so with 9BB in the middle including the blinds it was the perfect opportunity for me to get my stack in and gamble. Unfortunately I couldn’t improve against a caller with ATo.

Apart from that I didn’t play much. The afternoon is often the only chance I get to sit down and play poker tournaments. Unfortunately at that time of day hardly any games of interest run here nowadays, most of the MTTs that used to exist have been replaced by satellites.  This has caused a reduction in my volume and a corresponding increase in the time it’ll take to complete this quest.

Thanks Lambert and Glenelg, I must admit a nice bink to speed-up proceedings would be very welcome right now!

Always a pleasure to read your diary Gary as it is to play against you, as I'm constantly impressed by your abilty, consistency, and focus.  I've referred a few people to this thread as a lesson in proper bankroll management and wish you all the best in finally crossing the finsih line.  I've no doubt it won't take too much longer now.
