Swog's bankroll challenge.

edited January 2012 in Poker Chat

As a few may know i'm currently a first year maths student at Manchester university, i've being playing on the site since November '11(ish). Being playing poker for little over 6 months (since i turned 18), i have become addicted, recording all poker on tv, reading forums, poker books etc... Recently i've been playing profitably making a nice little bankroll, then cashing out, then depositing again. Now i'm looking for a little a bit of encouragement from others and myself to commit to solid hours of grinding in order to maximise my monthly earnings and build a decent bankroll. My ambition is one day to be rolled to be playing the biggest games on this website.

My starting bankroll is £89.21. I will be playing the following games  (recording progress as i go):
- NL4 cash. (full buy-ins)
- £2.25 DYM's (a view to £3.30s soon)
- 7.15pm £100 guaranteed deepstack (daily if possible)
- Monday DTD (weekly if possible)
- £1.05 turbo headsup (occasionally)

i will look to report on progress after every session of poker, possibly every day of poker, posting hands and asking for feedback etc. As of yet, i have no 'target' bankroll to achieve by a set time, i just want to try and play my best poker and commit to volume and hope the profits look after themselves.

Finally, i am willing to give to charity (not sure which yet) 5% of my monthly profits for the foreseeable future out of my own money not my bankroll. I will look to achieve a figure of £2.50 a month in donation (so £50 profit a month). To get the ball rolling, i would like to take advice on my selection of games. If anyone has any suggestions or questions don't be afraid to.

My 'challenge' and journey begins as of now. Good luck everyone.

    First question i will ask:
Is playing the survivor series (£1 buyin) a worthwhile venture, in hopes of cashing big?

I'd say probably not, it's a bit too much of a long shot while your roll is still fairly small. Also you have to commit to playing at the same time 7 evenings in a row, if you can't make one them your pound is wasted.

Anyway, good luck with your challenge, I look foward to following your progress.

I can't see any problem with playing this, as long as it's just the £1 BI and not further in the week, £1 a week towards this shouldn't even register on your radar with a £90 roll.

Top 3 prizes are usually £200, £400 and £600 and winning either would be massive for you.

i would say so, i`v managed to get to sat final table for a pound unfortunatly finished 6th although it was hard work getting there with no decent cards dealt but needing to pick rite spots to play during the week but if you cash say £200 for £1 i wouldn`t complain.

    Hi Swog,

in regards to Survivor i think it would be good to play but only if you can commit to all the week.

seems ok your plan roughly 40-50 buy ins starting for and about 25 for nl4 should be fine.

Will you be dropping down in dym's if you get below a certain amount?

£2.20 deepstack is a great way to make some money, so definately try to play this as much as possible.

Most of all good luck and have fun, hope it dont affect your Uni.

On the DYM's I'd advise waiting till you have around £100-120 then play JUST the £3.30 ones as rake in £2.25 ones is slightly worse so are not worth playing if you have any choice about it.

Thanks everyone for the input and the good luck messages. I will be on the tables from 5pm after ive done some uni work.

In response to Dudeskin, that was my thinking initially. £2.25DYM = 12.5% rake. £3.30DYM = 10% rake, which then seems to be the set percentage rake for even the high stakes £55DYM's. So i'll probably follow this advice as it means winning 55% of games. Then if i go below £100 i will stop playing DYM's till i bakc safe to play them.

A question on the £2.20 DYM's i have played these a few times over the last few weeks, cashed in them atleast half the time, but am i not under-rolled to play a £2 buy-in tournament?

First session of my challenge: (3 tabling NL4 for just under an hour)
i will list some interesting hands for debate (biggest winners/losers mainly) after this post
Table 1) Early on ended up topping up for £0.92 but then ended 50 minutes later running my stack upto £12, after a late setback i eneded with £10.66. Profit of +£5.74.
Table 2) lost £0.47 over the course of the 50 minute session, no top-ups used here, mainly being card dead and seeing my stack fall through the blinds. Profit of -£0.47.
Table 3) Topped up early by the amount of £1.92, where i called an open shove from UTG with JJ, and lost to Q9o, i will be posting this hand, so i would like feedback on this please. Profit of -£2.31.

Overall profit of +£2.96 for this session. (£92.17 bankroll. 185 C4P)

I suggest you should play the mini events at 8:15 every night. It's only £3.30 to enter. Only on sunday the mini primo is £5.50. If you make the final table it's a very good way to build your bank roll

NL4 is softer than the DYMs, so Id go with them for most of your volume.

About your question on under rolled for multis, yeah your underrolled but it dosnt mean you cant take a few shots

Good start, like the way you present it too.

    All hands played fine:

    1) you want to bet flop due to their stack no point check calling, get in on flop when you have most equity (any heart or Ace)

    2) Looks like you played very well, got quite alot of value on what seems like a dry board wp

    3) they have approx 40bb so its an auto stack of in my books.

    Keep posting and run good

Personally i dont think you should play the mini mains, although they are good and if you cash it will give you a nice boost. I think for tourneys you should play £2.20 deepstacks (guranteed ones) and no more even the £1.10 if you cash well could like give you 50% increase in your roll, anything higher i think it will dent ur roll a bit too much but still if you run well could be worthwhile.

With your bankroll management, its really whether you can deposit if need be then you can be more agressive and take shots earlier.
