Haha! And don't be sorry, i'm still relatively new around here and what i've found out is that people will not judge you! Also, what other place do you know where you can pretty much talk to the people on TV. SkyPoker, in the opinion of me, is the best poker site on the web if you're from the UK. Oh and i must say that after switching, their broadband is also more reliable than any other on the market. Some that have been purporting to be the best recently on TV need to be done for false advertising!
oops the term i was on about is "variance' but then tikay has just explained it apologies some how managed to miss out the word in the post above hiten Posted by prepared
Variance basically means 'poker luck'. IE; if you bet all your money that your AA hand is the best hand, and the other person also bets but he has K2, and KK2A3 comes out, it means that although we made three A's, our opponent made a full house, even though his hand was worse when we both went 'all in'. EG, variance is when the original best hand loses but you did nothing wrong by putting all your money in.

I think a better way of describing variance is comparing it to flipping coins. If you flip a coin it's 50/50 whether it's going to be heads or tails. But if you flip a coin 10 times in a row, sometimes you'll get 3 heads, sometimes 5, sometimes 8, sometimes none.
AK is about 50/50 to win against 88 if the chips all go in pre-flop. But sometimes you'll have this type of situation and win it 4 times in a row, equally sometimes you'll lose it 4 times in a row. But if you do it 10,000 times, it will be VERY close to 50/50.
So over the short term you can be unlucky or lucky no matter how big a favourite or howw big an underdog you are.
Was it windy in the studio last night, Anna? Your hair was looking... lovely... of course... *cough* lol (luckily she'll never read this)
If you want to understand variance just understand it as anything that varies from the norm. So if you get it all-in with AA v 22 you're 80% favourite to win. Therefore you're 20% to lose and that's how often things vary from the norm of the AA winning. That's the variance in that hand. So, even getting it in with AA you'll lose 2/10, 20/100, 200/1000 and 2000/10000. Even when you make all the right moves, you'll still lose to a worse hand sometimes. Variance is brilliant... except when it happens to me.

no such luck
I don't remember the exact stats (couldn't stand the subject) but I do remember that a coinflip after 10,000 goes can still be far away from 50/50 - maybe one of our more statistically inclined members can remind us of the probabilities.

There's variance, and there's VARIANCE
