So going to have a play tonight. Was a nice day off yesterday, its nice having some time off :) Already busted the 33 BH. KK vs qj on a qj5 flop after they limp called big raise. What can you do? Im expecting a few break even/ loss days, its not a problem im due some so.

having a few issues at uni at the moment. One of my good mates has started to go off the rails a little bit in the past month. hes been turning to alcohol msot nights, last night for example he drank nearly a full bottle of whisky, on his own, in his room for no reason. This happens quite a lot and is concerning a few of us. He missed an important lecture again because of this. He also drank 2 bottles of wine, half a bottle of whisky, on his own in his room over the space of about 4 hours, then decided at 4am to go to go for a walk to the nearby former racecourse (now a very dangerous park) to clear his head, but took a bottle of Baileys with him, tried to climb a tree and failed so sat at the bottom drinking. He also lost his phone in the process. I guess it sounds funny but its also really concerning.

So anyway Im a little bit sure what to do, he has quite a few confidence issues so got him and a few lads coming round tonight to get him out his room and socializing. He only opens up when hes drunk though so ironically we may need him to drink to find out the issue and try to solve it. I dont know if im overeacting (im not a big drinker at all) but to me it really does seem like he has an alcohol issue.

Anyway I suppose I need some advice on what to do, dont expect it though I suppose its pretty personal stuff really. Anyways gonna grind for a bit now until they come :)

It sounds like your mate is depressed. Depression can be cruel and quite often people don't know why they are depressed which makes it harder to understand. I was depressed for 2 yrs and went through a spell of 3 months where I NEVER left the house it got that bad.

I drank every night during this time as a release........when you are happy being drunk is a good feeling but when you are depressed drinking makes it a whole lot worse....been there.

The thing is, it is hard for men to open up about these feelings........he is fortunate to have good friends like yourself, being there for him and trying to get him socialising (not drinking) will do him the world of good. Maybe see a doctor...tablets worked for me but getting back out there and a new job was the best cure for me...

I could be way off of course but what your saying sounds all too familiar.....gl m8

Hi mate, I agree with waller02 on this, it definately sounds like depression.  I'd suggest just trying to talk to the guy, tell him that you're concerned about him and want to help and hope he's ready to open up.

I would imagine your Uni will have staff trained to help in these situations, it would certainly be worth investigating and trying to get him to talk to either a doctor or a professional at the University.

Good luck with it, from personal experience, knowing there are people who care will go a long way in helping him if it is depression related.

As for the poker, will have to organise something soon, I'm actually playing really well at the moment and running almost as good as you ;) so would be interesting to get your feedback as I'm sure there are a few areas you could help me make small adjustments.

no expert but keep him invloved with you and other people - tell him he is drinking too much
Don't endorse, encourage or let him isolate himself

either early stages of alcholism and/or depression

does anything trigger the binge drinking ?

All you can do is look out for him, be there for him - maybe inform his family of the problem
he may need professional help, he wants to want the help - that's the hardest part

    take care

    Hi Wacko,

Great read thus far and can you tell me where to find the boom switch which is most definately ON at the moment.

Sorry to hear about your friend, I would strongly recommend that you take the advice off some of the posters and try and get some professional help / counselling for your friend. Sounds like mental health / depression which is fuelling alcoholism - need to break that circle quickly :(

    Just a few questions:

Buying in via sats - do you have any rules when it comes to trying to qualify via sats?
Style of play - If you are doing well in some tournaments will you take a punt, adjust your style in other open tournaments that you are playing, with the knowledge you are already in profit for the night?
Vegas - seem to recall you couldn't give this a go last time as you were under 21 - are you able to give this a go next year? Is this a goal of yours to play in WSOP?

    Cheers

    Hi Simon,

Yeah great replies by everyone, advice taken on board :)

Good questions. As for the first one. I dont have any specific rules. But it important to realse that sats can really hit your bankroll bad if you dont moderate. Generally im pretty good at knowing where to stop with them but sometimes I do play too many and I find that im £50+ sometimes like £100+ down just from playing them. So I dont have rules but I understand the importance of being sensible with them.

Question 2. good question again, but the answer is no, 95% of the time I dont change my style. I know what your saying, "oh im in profit so lets go a bit crazy and get to 1st or nothing" or something similar but I dont feel the need to change my style then. if im going to change my style il change near the start of the tourney when I have a feel for the opponents. If anything I focus even harder when im up as its likely iv been playing and running well and the more I play the more opportunity I have to win.

Question 3, yes I will be trying to get to Vegas this year but it wont be a priority by any means. Im actually ogin with uni again in may this year. I went last year for 2 weeks around america (4 days in Vegas) but was 20. Going back as a "helper" this year and il be 21 so can go and play for 4 days basically. Il be trying but I wont be bothered if I dont make it, for now its not a goal for me to play in the WSOP. If my live game improves 100 fold then il give it more serious thought :)

Good questions mate thanks very much :) Havnt seen you on the tables yet you not playing so much?
