So sad to read about the passing of Peter Walker aged 84. For those of a certain age Peter was the voice of summer Sunday afternoons on BBC2’s John Player League. He played test cricket for England and his county cricket for Glamorgan who he served in many capacities. Brilliant fielder close to the wicket, I was too young to have seen him play,but, I went on a couple of cricket tours where he was our ex professional along to give us insight. A gentleman who was generous with his time and tales of cricket and cricketers. I loved his company, we had a shared interest in the Zulu wars and he really had an encyclopaedic knowledge of these. One of my great memories of this quietly spoken man was during England’s tour to Sri Lanka in 2003, we were watching the teams warm up and everybody wanted to see Muttiah Muralitharan live. Peter had never seen him before. Imagine my surprise as we were stood behind him and Peter suddenly bellowed “ he’s a chucker” . Luckily we were far enough away that Muralitharan didn’t hear him . It was the only time I heard him raise his voice, he was shocked that anyone would be allowed to play with that action. I am lucky to have met him. RIP Peter
