Who won what, Monday 24th May

Tikay10Tikay10 Member, Administrator, Moderator Posts: 161,220

Good afternoon.

One week on from the day Lockdown was further eased which resulted in dreadful MTT numbers, traffic last night was ever so slightly better w-o-w. Hopefully, these numbers can be maintained, but it's hard to say what will happen. Like all the other UK facing poker sites, who are all suffering similarly, Sky Poker will survive, but it's going to be a long summer for sure. On which cheerful note I'll move on.

Circumstances obliged me to watch a Scottish football match last night. Like most English football fans, I have a low opinion of football in Scotland, but it's not based on any solid evidence, it's just a dogma. In fact, it was highly entertaining & I quite enjoyed it. Skill levels don't bother me, it's open, entertaining football I want to see, & it certainly ticked those boxes. Who'd have thought? It just shows, we need to challenge established opinion sometimes.

Having said all that, it's crazy that a City like Dundee (population 150,000) tries to support TWO football stadiums (stadia?), just a few yards apart. How can that ever make sense? It's actually worse in England - e.g., Bristol (Rovers & City), West London (Chelsea, Fulham, QPR & Brentford), North London (Arsenal & Spurs) & Liverpool (Blue & Red). The older I get, the less sense all this makes to me.

    7 at 7 Bounty Hunter (£1,197)

A long overdue & very welcome win for BACKFOOT, who has been here 10 or more years.

Runner-up 3265 has had plenty of decent results, almost all of them in the early evening schedule. In fact he won a £200 BH that kicked off at 5pm yesterday.

BeachBody continues to shine, two third places last night, 7 @ 7 & Turbo. It may be my imagination, but he seems to be cashing with monotonous regularity of late, rather in the way @MattBates used to before he lost his way.

2,000 games & 6 years into his Sky Poker journey, Fishdog77 enjoyed easily his biggest result. Even better, he has been on a painful 10 month downswing, & this result repaired all that damage & more besides. He must be buzzing this morning.

Runner-up DUTCHESS62 has plenty of winning form in the book.

In 6th was weecheez1, coming just 24 hours after he ran 8th in the Sunday Major. I see he holds an entry for SPT Online, which he won in a satellite. Heaven help you if you are drawn on his table, he's a proper PITA to play against.

Climwinner was rampant last night, 23 head prizes in taking down the Mini says it all. It's at least his 2nd Mini win in the last 12 months, & he's also won 2 Main Events in the same period. Good player, & extremely popular amongst the lads.

lisbonwag won Sheriff 31st July last year & repeated the trick last night, though as far as I can tell, has not won much in the interim.

Dog Bloke, MAGPIETYKE & M10Dembele were all present & correct, as expected.

A quite remarkable performance by THIRA777, winning Reload for the 2nd time in 4 nights & the third time in a month, the first occasion being exactly a month ago. Pretty sure three Reload wins in a month must be some sort of record.

    The Swogster had a hot hour or so - 6th in a £300 timed (21.10), 3rd in Reload (21.30) & 3rd in a £500 BH (22.15).

    Best British Sportsperson (part 2)

Yesterday, I nominated Phil Taylor in Darts & nobody disagreed, so we'll take that as agreed.

Today, let's look at "Best Jockey" in the UK.

For NH, I can only nominate two - Francombe & McCoy, & I think it has to go to McCoy.

In flat racing, it's a lot more tricky, & we'll discard Sir Gordon Richards as it was before our time.

Even though some of these are not British, we'll include them as it was where they rode most of their winners.

    I think it comes down to;

    Piggott

    Dettori

    Ryan Moore

    Kieron Fallon

    Joe Mercer

I can cast aside all of them except Piggott & (Joe) Mercer, & for me, it just about has to be the tall fella. Piggott was my hero for many a year, although going to prison for tax evasion took a little shine off his status. An unbelievable jockey though.

    Anyone disagree?

Pat Eddery and Willie Carson not worth a mention @Tikay10

Fallon was a genius on a horse but had a very troubled career. Probably would have been champion many more times over if not for injuries and other problems.

I'm not having Ryan Moore being better than Eddery or Carson. Not yet, anyway.

Carson & Eddery are only worth a mention if we increased the shortlist to 10 or more, yes. (IMO). I just can't have Eddery or Carson as "best ever", and in my view, Ryan Moore is (or was...) better.

I agree Fallon was exceptional, but for me, he lost too many races he should have won, & his head was often in the wrong place due to all his outside distractions.

As a long time Man City Fan (many years of suffering) I recall the day Joe Mercer (Mr Football) was appointed manager in 1965. A colleague of mine (a big City fan and racing fan) backed every horse that Joe Mercer (the jockey) was riding, covering singles, doubles etc etc. Mercer won 5 of the 6 rides that day. My colleague won the equivalent of one years' wages, he was on £7 a week at the time.

    Wow, great story Gordon.

I'd quite forgotten about Joe Mercer (football). He was Manager at Man City for a good few years, but I always thought the way the club handled things at the end was disgraceful, & Joe deserved much better.

PS - good luck on Saturday.

Seeing how close Dundee & Dundee Utd's grounds are (closest in the UK), took me back to the early 1980's, when i was living there.

In about 1983, I was standing in Dens Park, on a freezing Winter's day. Think it was about -10 Centigrade. One person said "any thoughts on how to keep warm?" and got the immediate response "set fire to Tannadice" :)

It was indeed a great story.
And that's exactly what it was; a story.

Everyone knows Man City were only formed in 2008, so I'd take Dollie's anecdotes with a huge bag of salt.

Joe Mercer doesn't even sound like a real name.
