Championship Preview

Derby County – 6/1

After losing in the Playoff Final and missing the playoffs in the last two seasons, Steve McLaren was sacked and replaced by Paul Clement. He is inexperience in this role but has a great reputation as a coach.

New Signings: Alex Pearce (Free), Darren Bent (Free), Andreas Weimann (Free), Chris Baird (Free), Tom Ince (£4.75m), Scott Carson (Undis),

Derby have bought quickly & decisively. Bent & Ince have had their loan moves made permanent and Weimann should score well at this level. Question marks will be raised about the Manager’s experience but they look well set to justify favouritism.

Obviously there are plenty of signings yet to be made plus players will be lost as well. I am making my predictions now due to holidays but will make a better set of predictions when I return although this will be one round of matches into the season.

Think Hull & Burnley will do pretty well and both have a good chance of making the top six but cannot see either of them running away with the league. QPR could do anything. They could win the league, they could do a Wigan. Probably they will do something in between.

I think that Derby & Middlesbrough are the most likely winners. Derby badly under achieved last season and had vital injuries that derailed their season. They should do much better this season. Boro have lost Bamford & Ledesma but if they replace them adequately then they look a decent bet at 8/1.

I cannot see Ipswich doing as well as last season. The division is a bit stronger and I cannot see Murphy getting as many goals again. Wolves & Brentford did well last season & will have their supporters again this season. At the moment, I can see no reason why Wolves will do better next season. Brentford look stronger but it is uncertain how the loss of Mark Warburton will hit them.

Sheffield Wednesday look the most likely team to show dramatic improvement. They have been the most active in the transfer market and have brought in quality. They still lack a quality striker that will convert the chances that they will no doubt create.

Relegation is interesting because most of the favourites can argue a case for survival. Nobody looks as weak as Wigan, Millwall & Blackpool were last season. Rotherham seem to have bought best, bringing is experience that should be enough to keep them safe.

Bristol City look the strongest of the promoted sides. Preston & MK Dons both need to add to their squads if they want to stay up.

So at this stage, here is my prediction:

1.       Derby

2.       Middlesbrough

3.       Hull City

4.       Burnley

5.       Brentford

6.       Sheff Wed

7.       Wolves

8.       Ipswich

9.       QPR

10.   Fulham

11.   Nottm F

12.   Birmingham

13.   Bristol C

14.   Cardiff

15.   Brighton

16.   Reading

17.   Bolton

18.   Leeds

19.   Blackburn

20.   Charlton

21.   Rotherham

22.   Preston

23.   MK Dons

24.   Huddersfield

There are decent prices for relegation on Huddersfield (9/2) & Blackburn (8/1).

Sheff Wed look good for the top half at 4/5 while Blackburn (5/6), Leeds (4/6) & QPR (11/8) look good for the bottom half.

I like to have two bets to finish in the top six for each division and have had five out of six winners in each of the last two seasons. This season the picks look tougher. I will sort out my picks shortly & have them in doubles & trebles with teams in L1 & L2.

    Quality Post Mr. Tiger.

I'm not sure how easy it will be to keep it up to date but I'm hoping you can do so, as and when significant transfers take place.

My early fancies are Brentford and Bristol City, I was thinking Bristol City might be a good bet for top 6, though was hoping for slightly more than 11/4 or 3/1 on offer.

I think I will follow your strategy and look for doubles and trebles with L1 and 2.

I think Derby are worthy favourites but not brilliant value at 6/1. They have made their transfer moves early and as all the squad stand today, I think they have the squad best equipped to win the league. They have an energetic and skillgul midfield and Bent & Martin pretty much guarantees them goals.

They are helped by the fact that none of the relegated sides looks like a clear winner this season. Burnley & Hull will be probably top six but behind Derby if they put it all together.

Middlesbrough look the big danger if they can find the striker to replace Bamford. They are sound defensively but if they could sign someone like Jordan Rhodes then I would be siding with them. They have a bright young manager who has turned Boro round pretty quickly.

Not sure about Wolves. Sako would be a massive loss and I doubt they will do much better than last season without a top replacement.

Brentford were untroubled when Rossler left & Warburton took over so it could be that another change makes little difference. My gut feeling is that they will finish 7th to 9th.

Bristol City are hard to predict. They have lost Jay Emmanuel Thomas, who was a key player for them last season so need to replace him. I would be a bit surprised to see them in the top six but they have a good manager and will probably start well.

Still plenty of signings to be made that could make the difference here. The last two seasons in L1 have been easy to get good value with Brentford & Bristol City clearly outstanding prospects that fulfilled expectations. There is always good value with perennial under achievers, Sheffield United, accounting for over 15% of the market. The difficulty this season is deciding who will take advantage. One year Sheff Utd will live up to the hype but they have done little since last season to suggest they will improve next season.

The relegated sides all lack any spark that suggests a quick return. Wigan & Millwall look a few players short while Blackpool seem to be in terminal decline. Peterboro don’t seem to be improving & none of the favourites are jumping out at me. I expect Barnsley to do better and in a season where no-one stands out, Swindon might be the best bet.

Lower down the market, three of the promoted sides have recruited well and Burton, Shrewsbury & Bury may well be the surprise teams here with one of them claiming a double promotion.

Blackpool could make it a double relegation and Colchester, Crewe, Southend and Port Vale are likely to be fighting to stay up.

It is a bit early to predict but here is my early assessment:

    1.       Swindon

    2.       Barnsley

    3.       Sheff Utd

    4.       Bury

    5.       Shrewsbury

    6.       Wigan

    7.       Peterboro

    8.       Bradford

    9.       Millwall

    10.   Burton

    11.   Rochdale

    12.   Coventry

    13.   Doncaster

    14.   Oldham

    15.   Gillingham

    16.   Walsall

    17.   Scunthorpe

    18.   Fleetwood

    19.   Chesterfield

    20.   Crewe

    21.   Southend

    22.   Colchester

    23.   Blackpool

    24.   Port Vale

Decent prices for relegation on Blackpool 11/5 and Southend 4/1. I like Top Half bets on Shrewsbury (5/6), Burton (Evens) Rochdale (6/4). I like Bottom Half bets on Walsall (8/11) & Chesterfield (10/11).

    League Two Preview

Don’t have time for a full review for League Two but like Sheff Utd in L1, Portsmouth dominate the market and make great value if you can pick a team to beat them.  As with L1, the candidate here isn’t immediately obvious. In fact, I can’t look beyond Portsmouth, even at 9/2. They have attracted Paul Cook as manager from Chesterfield and I believe that he is the man to start their recovery.

He has brought in a number of players including Tollitt, Stockley, Doyle, Burgess, McGurk, Barton & most significantly Roberts.

I am struggling to see who are the most likely challengers. Orient & Notts County are the most likely of the relegated sides to put in a challenge while Luton, Oxford and Northampton will have their supporters.

Bristol Rovers will do well with Chris Lines back at his spiritual home but probably will fall just short of promotion.

Think there is value for Top Half bets on Bristol Rovers at 8/11 and Wycombe at 5/6.

Off on holiday so had to place a few bets today. Will have to update after the first round of fixtures when I return when we will know better the squads that clubs will have.

    Championship:

    Huddersfield to be Relegated 4/1

    Top Half - SheffWed 4/5
    Bottom Half - Blackburn 5/6
    Bottom Half - QPR 11/8

    Bottom Half - Walsall 8/11

    League Two:

    Portsmouth to Win (e/w) 4/1

I have done Top Six/Seven multiples although I have to say I am not as confident this season as previous season.

Top Six - Hull City Evens
    Top Six - Middlesbrough 4/6
    Top Six Swindon 2/1
    Top Six - Barnsley 2/1
    Top Seven - Orient 11/8
    Top Seven - Northampton 13/8

Twenty Bets of combinations of doubles & trebles. Could include Portsmouth & Sheff Utd if you prefer less risk.

    Good Luck!

Musn't get carried away too early but I like to re-assess my bets each week over the first month of the season to see if performances reinforce my views or to spot a team that I had't spotted earlier.

Huddersfield - tough opening fixture so review later.

Blackburn - happy with their loss although a touch unfortunate

Sheff Wed - good result from tricky fixture

QPR - good result in a relatively easy fixture

Burnley - a bit disappointed at dropping points in a match they should be winning

Barnsley - disappointing result & performance, let's hope that was a one off or this one is going south early

    Bury - decent away draw

Shrewsbury - loss at home but against a good side

    Chesterfield - whooops!

    Walsall - expected home draw

Portsmouth - comfortable home win against poor opposition

Middlesbrough's signing of David Nugent makes them the team to be with in the SBC.

I believed that they will have moved forward generally on last season but my concern was a goalscorer after losing Bamford. Nugent is probably a better scorer than Bamford at this level & I expect 20+ goals from him. I think the 11/2 each way on Boro looks an even better bet with Burnley, QPR, Derby & Brentford all slipping up last weekend.

Still happy with the 28/1 on Sheff Wed which has long gone as they are rated 18/1 now, which may go down to half that if they win at Ipswich on Saturday.

I have had a good look at the SBC Top Goalscorer market & two names stand out. Benik Afobe is a worthy favourite at 9/1. Wolves midfield isn't as strong this season but I think that Afobe will still score enough goals to be a pretty safe each way bet with four places.

I have already said that I expect Nugent to get 20+ goals so at 16/1, he is brilliant value. The next three in the betting all have question marks about them. Bent isn't firing yet. Martin is injury prone & Rhodes could well leave the division before the window closes.

I have added these two bets to my season long bets.

Others that might be worth a punt at decent odds are Vokes at 25/1, Watt at 50/1 & Matias at 66/1.

League One Leading Goalscorer market is interesting.

Leon Clarke is not a player to be relied on but at this level, he should score in volume, particularly with Bury's creative midfield. He got a "freak" opening day goal, scored twice in the LC in midweek and is Bury's penalty taker. At 16/1, I am happy to take him each way.

There are question marks against a number of the players at the top of the market so I will have small bets on a couple of long shots.

Tom Bradshaw is a goal scorer IF he can stay fit & that is a big IF. He scored a hat trick at Forest in the LC in midweek so is in form and at 25/1 is good each way value. I also like Paddy Madden, also at 25/1. He was a prolific scorer at Yeovil and he is starting to find his form again. Both these players are at sides that are likely to be bottom half so their chances could be limited but I think both could give us a good run for our money.

Certainly happy to get those bets on before the weekend.

Boro were the most impressive team in the SBC yesterday and are now 7/2 for the title.

Paddy Madden scored twice for Scunthorpe & is now 16/1 for L1 Top Scorer. Tom Bradshaw also scored & has been cut to 20/1.

My two side for relegation in SBC, Huddersfield & Blackburn, drew against each other so the best outcome. Good to see QPR slip up late on as well. Burnley's draw was a disappointment.

Portsmouth have shown their intentions early with two wins out of two and are 3/1 now for the L2 title.

Pretty happy with the midweek matches.

Decent draw for Boro at Derby.
Dropped home points for Huddersfield & Blackburn.
    Benik Afobe scored again.
QPR winning & Burnley losing were disappointing.
    Barnsley win at Millwall
    Southend & Port Vale draw.
Bury, Shrewsbury, Chesterfield & Walsall disappointing.
    Leon Clarke scores again.
    Portsmouth draw at Crawley.

    Top Six/Seven - WDDWWL (Current Positions - 2nd, 5th, 9th, 7th, 1st, 7th) - Happy with that.

How are our long term bets doing?

Here are comparisons of our price with the current price.

    Championship

    Middlesbrough to Win (e/w) 11/2 (Now 3/1)
Sheff Wed to Win (e/w) 28/1 (Now 28/1)
Huddersfield to be Relegated 4/1 (Now 11/4)
Blackburn to be Relegated 8/1 (Now 5/1)
Burnley Top North West Side 6/5 (Now 5/4)
Sheff Wed Top Half 4/5 (Now 8/11)
Blackburn Bottom Half 5/6 (Now 8/15)
QPR Bottom Half 11/8 (Now 5/4)
Leeds Bottom Half 4/6 (Now 8/15)
Benik Afobe Top Goalscorer 9/1 (now 15/2)
David Nugent Top Goalscorer 16/1 (Now 20/1)
    Top Six - Middlesbrough 4/6 (Now 4/9)
Top Six - Hull City Evens (Now 8/11)

Overall pretty happy so far. Middlesbrough have justified my support & but for a last gasp goal by Derby on Tuesday would be top now. Huddersfield & Blackburn have both started poorly and should give us a good run for our money. Afobe has started brightly but Nugent hasn't had a start yet for Boro.

    League One

    Swindon to Win (e/w) 18/1 (Now 18/1)
    Barnsley to Win (e/w) 20/1 (Now 15/1)
    Bury to Win (e/w) 35/1 (Now 33/1)
Blackpool to be Relegated 11/5 (Now 10/11)
Southend to be Relegated 4/1 (Now 9/2)
Port Vale to be Relegated 13/8 (Now 6/4)
Top Half - Burton Evens (Now 4/5)
    Top Half - Rochdale 6/4 (Now 4/5)
    Top Half - Shrewsbury 5/6 (Now 6/5)
    Top Half - Bury 10/11 (Now 4/5)
    Bottom Half - Chesterfield 10/11 (Now 5/4)
    Bottom Half - Walsall 8/11 (Now 11/10)
Leon Clarke Top Goalscorer 16/1 (Now 14/1)
Tom Bradshaw Top Goalscorer 25/1 (Now 16/1)
Paddy Madden Top Goalscorer 25/1 (Now 14/1)
Top Six Swindon 2/1 (Now 9/4)
Top Six Barnsley 2/1 (Now 7/4)

Largely happy. Blackpool have continued to nosedive. Rochdale, Burton & Bury have started well. Chesterfield have bought well and are doing much better than I thought and Walsall have also started well. Our goalscorers have all started well.

    League Two

    Portsmouth to Win (e/w) 4/1 (Now 3/1)
Top Half Wycombe 5/6 (Now 2/7)
Top Half Bristol Rovers 8/11 (Now 2/5)
    Top Seven - Orient 11/8 (Now 4/5)
    Top Seven - Northampton 13/8 (Now 11/8)

Happy here with all bets now at shorter odds than when placed. My only worry is that Orient are looking so good that they may beat Portsmouth to the title and I think a saver at 8/1 is probably the way to go here.

As I have said before, I am not a fan of betting much during the early weeks of the season because there are so many freak results and form and trends haven't had time to set in. One exception that I make is to look for trends that have carried over from the previous season, which can be reliable a bit earlier than new trends. Here are trends that have carried over from last season in the Football League:

Blackburn - 6/7 home matches under 10.5 Corners (average 8.7)

Luton - 12/14 away matches under 2.5 goals (average 1.7)
Mansfield - 5/5 away matches under 10.5 corners (average 7.2)
Newport - 9/11 away matches under 10.5 corners (average 8.8)
Northampton - 6/6 away matches under 10.5 corners (average 8.3)
Plymouth - 6/6 home matches both teams scored
Stevenage - 5/6 home matches over 10.5 corners (average 16.0)
Stevenage - 6/7 away matches over 10.5 corners (average 15.0)
Wycombe - 5/6 home matches under 10.5 corners (average 8.5)
York - 13/15 home matches under 2.5 goals (average 1.4)

Even though these trends look good, I would still be watchful at this stage of the season. I used to lose money in August & September and it took me until March to win it back. Now I don't bet big until October. There might be a bet or two but I will be keeping small for the next six weeks.

Too early for any bets of note but three jump off the page today.

    Stevenage v Hartlepool

Both of these teams have started the season with high corner trends that match how they finished last season. Stevenage home matches have had over 14.5 corners five times in the last six including 23 last week against Notts County. Pool match up well with 10 of their last 13 on the road topping 10.5 corners, 8 of them topping 12.5 including their first away match this season at York. Normally, I would be betting big here but August form is unreliable so I will be betting small.

Bet Over 11 Corners (Draw No Bet) at 1.85 (Bet365)

    Walsall v Coventry

Walsall did us proud last season with low corner games and started this season with just 4 corners against Oldham, taking their home record to 8 out of ten under 10.5 corners with 7 of those under 8.5. Coventry match up reasonably well as they tend to follow the trends of their opponents. Just a very small bet here.

Bet Under 10 Corners (DNB) at 1.90 (Bet365)

Leeds v Sheff Wed (12.30 kick off)

Going for low corners here, mainly based on Leeds' seven consecutive home matches below 10.5 corners at an average of 8.6. Wednesday were a low corner side last season, endorsed by two low home totals this season, but they did go high in their first away match at Ipswich. Again, a very small bet for interest in a TV game.

    Bet Under 10.5 Corners at 1.875 (Bet365)

Have decided to have a bit of fun with a string of correct score bets (very small)

    West Brom 2-1 Chelsea
    Palace 1-0 Villa
    Everton 0-2 Man City
    Sunderland 0-2 Swansea
    Man Utd 2-0 Newcastle
    Leeds 1-1 Sheff Wed
    Leeds 1-2 Sheff Wed
    Middlesbrough 2-0 Bristol City
    Middlesbrough 1-0 Bristol City
    Burnley 3-2 Brentford
    Charlton 0-1 Hull
    Brighton 1-0 Blackburn
    Barnsley 1-0 Bradford
    Southend 0-1 Swindon
    Crewe 0-1 Bury
    Portsmouth 2-0 Morecambe
    Wycombe 2-0 Dagenham
    Yeovil 0-1 Luton

This are mainly measured but based on a small sample of results with punts at West Brom ((Chelsea bogey side) and Burnley (should be plenty of goals), which will cover all the bets if they come in.

    Had three correct scores

Leeds 1-1 Sheff Wed at 7.2
    Brighton 1-0 Blackburn at 7.8
    Southend 0-1 Swindon at 12.0

The correct score profit was 9 points with two games still to play at Everton & West Brom.

Two of the corners bets won, turning a tidy profit.

Have a few small bets for this weekend. All look good but it is August so form isn't too solid.

    Rotherham v Fulham

I favour low corners here. Five of the Millers last seven at home have failed to reach 10.5 Corners (8-8-14-9-7-14-5) while all of the Cottagers last five (9-8-7-10-7) on the road has fallen short of this line. Bet on Under 11 Corners (DNB) at 1.85.

    Sheff Wed v Middlesbrough

Eight of Wednesday's last nine at home (8-8-6-6-9-10-11.9-6) have fallen short of 10.5 corners while Boro's two away matches this season have had 2 & 7 corners. Bet on Under 10.5 Corners at 1.95.

    Bradford v Port Vale

City were great for low home corners last season & they have extended their run to ten consecutive low corner matches (8-6-10-10-10-4-5-9-8-9). Vale match up reasonably well with eight of their last eleven away failing to reach 10.5 corners (7-8-15-10-8-12-8-8-10-13-9).  Bet on Under 10.5 Corners at 1.95.

    Peterboro v Gillingham

This is a perfect match up for low corners. Boro have had 12 of their last 13 at home dropping short of 10.5 corners (9-8-8-5-6-9-16-4-10-6-5-9-7) wile the Gills have had seven consecutive unders on the road (5-5-10-10-10-6-9). Bet on Under 11 Corners (DNB) at 1.825

    Accrington v Northampton

Another perfect match up for low corners. Stanley's last six home matches have all failed to reach 10.5 corners ( 7-8-7-7-7-8) as have the Cobblers last six away matches (5-7-9-9-10-10) Bet on Under 10.5 Corners at 1.90.

    All bets are with Bet365.

I have a few correct score bets

    Hull City v Preston 1-0 2-0
    Coventry v Southend 1-0 2-0
    Oxford v Yeovil 2-1 3-1

    No big bets though.

Three winners, one "no bet" & one loser means another good profit plus got the correct score at Hull with Coventry still to come.
