'NO travel is risk free': Number 10 warns travellers that ANY country could be suddenly added to the quarantine list as travel firms warn of a wave of cancellations across France, Italy and Greece after ministers hit the 'nuclear button' over Spain

No 10 was unable to provide reassurances that the decision to subject arrivals from the popular holiday destination to 14 days in isolation - having previously cleared them to bypass the health restriction- would not be expanded to other countries with a coronavirus spike. The Spain decision, which gave holidaymakers five hours' notice on Saturday, is believed to have spooked many people who had booked trips in France , Italy and Greece with operators already reporting 'lots of cancellations'. This morning the Prime Minister's official spokesman said: 'Decisions on border measures and travel advice can be changed rapidly if necessary to help stop the spread of the disease. Unfortunately no travel is risk-free during this pandemic and disruption is possible and so anyone travelling abroad should be aware that our travel advice and exemption list is under constant review as we monitor the international situation.'

'I've lost £2,000 in wages - who's going to pay my mortgage?' Furious Brits arrive from Spain for two weeks of isolation after last-minute change to quarantine left 600,000 holidays ruined as Number 10 tells them to apply for benefits

Britons caught out by the last-minute addition of Spain to the UK's quarantine list are being left out of pocket after being forced to isolate for 14 days upon their return. Employers are under no obligation to pay staff while they are in quarantine, self-employed workers will be forced to give up jobs - and some people could even face the sack if they have to isolate when returning home. The shock decision to enforce a 14-day quarantine was imposed with five hours' notice and left tens of thousands of tourists unable to return home before it kicked in. Among the Britons arriving at Manchester Airport today was Joanne Jackson (left), 49, who had just returned from a two-week break in Nerja and said she has now lost £2,000 in wages due to the quarantine. Tony and Yolanda Schofield (top right), from Leamington Spa, flew into Heathrow Airport from Madrid this morning. The couple flew to Spain from Mexico, where they had been self-isolating for eight weeks. Among the arrivals at Stansted Airport today were young couple Harry Priestner, 24 and Meg Day (bottom right), 23. Mr Priestner had been furloughed from his job in recruitment and fears what could happen if he is asked to come back in.

10 areas in England with worst coronavirus rates as Oldham overtakes Leicester

It comes as a further 83 people died from the deadly virus across the UK, bringing the official death toll since the start of the pandemic to 45,961.
And worrying data shows the number of new cases is no longer falling.

My little town in the news. Not really been in that pub for years though. It is usually full of youngsters (showing my age) . Pub is now called the Covid and Anchor by locals.

The reason 'hundreds' are now being tested is because there was no tracking system in place and social distancing was non existent. Hence, no one knows who has it and who they have been in contact with since. Other establishments in the area (who were following the guidance) are now also being shut. A Farmers Market has also been cancelled.

Who is to blame though? The greedy owner for allowing so many in, putting profit before safety, or those who went in with disregard to the rules in place?

Initially, just two cases btw. That raised to between 11 & 16 today. Mobile testing was just going to be today (Wednesday) & Friday. It is now going to be every day until Sunday. Will be interesting to see the results in a few days.

That also means I will have to reluctantly revisit this thread.

Interactive map shows mortality rate for every region in Britain and reveals Birmingham was the worst-hit city in UK - and England had highest level of excess Covid deaths in Europe

By the end of May, England had seen the highest overall excess deaths - those above what are expected - out of 21 European countries compared by the Office for National Statistics. But it was Spain and Italy that suffered the largest spikes in excess deaths, called 'peaks', suggesting they faced the hardest hits on the continent. Bergamo, one of the first places in Europe to go into lockdown, had the highest peak in excess mortality. It saw 847.7 per cent more deaths than usual in the week ending 20 March. The UK's highest peak of excess deaths was recorded in Brent, at 357.5 per cent at the height of Britain's crisis, in the week ending April 17. Looking at cities, the highest peak excess mortality was in Madrid at 432.7 per in the week ending March 27, as the coronavirus sweep over Spain a couple of weeks before Britain. Birmingham had the highest peak excess mortality of any major British city at 249.7 per cent in the week ending 17 April.

I don't think that The Government confusing plan actually works, as per the confusion thread.
Also tracing isn't what it could be.

Why is the government insisting no one knew about asymptomatic spread of COVID-19?

Matt Hancock and Boris Johnson have both contradicted SAGE evidence about asymptomatic coronavirus transmission at the beginning of the outbreak. (Christopher Furlong/pool via Reuters)

    So, what’s the truth?
In fact, Johnson and Hancock’s comments contradict evidence provided by its top scientists at the beginning of the outbreak.
The government’s Scientific Advisory Group for Emergencies (SAGE) was warning about asymptomatic transmission as far back as 28 January, three days before the UK’s first two coronavirus cases were confirmed.
Minutes for a SAGE meeting on that day read: “There is limited evidence of asymptomatic transmission, but early indications imply some is occurring.”

Furthermore, past coronaviruses are known to have spread asymptomatically.

Care homes ‘thrown to the wolves’

Hancock’s comments about asymptomatic transmission came a day after Downing Street was accused of throwing care homes “to the wolves”.
Advising hospitals to discharge thousands of patients into care homes without knowing if they had COVID-19 was a “reckless” and “appalling” policy error, a House of Commons report said.

Discharging around 25,000 patients to free up beds was an example of the government’s “slow, inconsistent and at times negligent” approach to social care, the cross-party public accounts committee said.
It added it was “concerned” the Hancock-led Department of Health continued with the policy “even once it was clear there was an emerging problem”.
Hospitals in England were asked on March 17 to discharge patients, but patients did not require a coronavirus test prior to discharge until April 15.

I am not clever enough to know what this actually means.

You clearly wouldn't want this number of infections from the average pub, or restaurant, on an average weekend.

The contact tracers are only contacting around half of each infected persons contacts.

The lack of an operational app, leaves a massive hole in that until an app is up and running it is obviously impossible to track and trace those that an infected person has been in contact with, but is not aware of their identity.

Even when they get an app up an running a further big hole exists when you consider the number of people without access to a smart phone.
