Covid will be around 'FOREVER' and Brits will need 'repeated vaccinations', warns SAGE scientist who says Boris being forced to impose another national lockdown is 'possible' but 'local ones more likely'

Professor Sir Mark Walport said that, like flu, repeat inoculations will be required to control outbreaks in the UK - but Covid-19 will never be 'eradicated by vaccination' like smallpox was. His stark warning comes amid fears that the country could see a second national lockdown if it sees a rise in cases like Spain (Spain's seven-day rolling average cases compared to the UK) - a move Professor Walport did not rule out entirely. Local lockdowns in Manchester and Leicester have already been implemented, with households in Oldham (bottom right) and Blackburn to be banned from meeting in each others' homes from midnight.

Scotland's 73% spike in new coronavirus cases drives the UK to its highest Saturday total for eight weeks - with 1,288 infections - as SAGE scientist warns virus will be around 'FOREVER'

A surge in coronavirus cases in Scotland has driven the UK's total to its biggest rise in eight weeks - as new infections north of the border hit 123, its highest daily total in three months. The Scottish total increased from 71 yesterday and experts have blamed an outbreak at the Two Sisters meat processing plant in Coupar Angus. In the UK, there were 1,288 new cases today, compared with 1,077 last Saturday. Some 18 more people have died from the killer disease across all settings - including care homes, hospitals and the wider community - bring the UK's total death toll to 41,423. Today has brought the biggest rise in cases for a Saturday since June 20, when 1,295 people were diagnosed with Covid-19. On that day, 71 people died from the bug. Britain's total caseload during the pandemic has hit 324,601. Meanwhile, Scotland today recorded its highest daily rise in coronavirus cases in three months after 123 new diagnoses were reported. Scotland reported no new deaths. Wales reported 34 new cases and one further deaths. It comes after a former chief scientific adviser warned that coronavirus will be present 'forever' and people are likely to need regular vaccinations against it.

'Some days we don't get a single customer': Damning proof that COVID 'cowardice' is killing a nation of shopkeepers

There has been a tailor's shop at 13 St Swithin's Lane since 1915. It has survived two world wars and 20 prime ministers. But Boris Johnson, the 21st, could be its last. The reason is simple: the City of London's offices remain empty. Dean Hooke, whose family took over in 1977, says office workers account for at least 80 per cent of the customers at his firm John W. Hooke & Son. It's no coincidence that his takings are down by the same margin on their pre-pandemic levels.

The Times suggests the NHS in England has what the paper calls a "hidden waiting list", with 15 million people on it who need follow-up appointments.
It says the total comes from freedom of information requests to NHS trusts, analysed by the healthcare technology firm, Medefer. It points out that the official figure - 3.9 million - only includes those waiting for their first hospital appointment after a GP referral.
An NHS spokesman responds by describing the study as "flawed and self-serving", saying it does not reveal "whether or not the appointments it refers to are actually overdue".

Hazmat-clad officials rushed on board a Ryanair flight moments before it departed from London Stansted to remove a passenger who had tested positive for coronavirus.

On Wednesday night, a passenger received a text from track and trace minutes before departure informing him that he had Covid-19. He and the passenger he was travelling with were then taken off the plane before it was due to fly to Pisa in Italy.

The pair were moved to the airport’s isolation area, where they were met by health authorities. Their seats and the overhead cabin bins were then disinfected, with the plane finally leaving over an hour behind schedule.
