Pressure grows on Rishi Sunak to ease the cost of living squeeze as families face a £1,600 hit from Awful April and campaigners urge Chancellor to 'get his chequebook out again'
Tory MPs and campaigners urged the Chancellor to revisit last week's mini-Budget to help millions facing an unprecedented hike in everyday costs. A record rise in energy bills kicks off a year of economic pain for millions. The energy price cap will jump from £1,277 to £1,971 - an increase of £693 - with official forecasts suggesting it will increase by a further £788 in October. An independent assessment for the Daily Mail found that price rises and tax hikes this month alone will cost a typical family of four over £134 a month - equal to more than £1,612 a year.
No cost-of-living crisis at Number 10! Boris Johnson hosted champagne reception for Tory donors at Claridge's and 'joked about Partygate' as his National Insurance hike hit the nation along with soaring household
Prime Minister Boris Johnson (left) hosted a luxurious champagne and canapes do at Claridge's (pictured walking in, left) to schmooze Tory donors just hours before the drastic new cost-of-living bills came into play for millions of Britons. As April 1 was nicknamed 'April cruel day', millions now face being unable to afford putting the heating on, cook warm meals or have hot water. Households are suffering a huge hit on living standards as the price of gas and electricity soars by 54 per cent this morning, as regulator Ofgem raises the price cap for an average home to £1,971 from £1,277. Experts predict it will be around £2,700-a-year from October. All the while Mr Johnson was wooing wealthy backers, with his aim to get cash for the Conservative's marginal seats funds. He also was said to have 'laughed off' the ongoing Partygate investigations by the Metropolitan Police, telling guests: 'I can assure you that you won't be sent any questionnaires for attending this event.' Cabinet ministers and MPs, including Home Secretary Priti Patel (pictured right attending the Tory donor event at Claridge's Hotel in Mayfair on Thursday) were also in attendance as Parliament broke up for Easter.
lucy4 said, This is what I don't understand, how can all of these 'Cost of living' rises be blamed on the Ukraine situation ?
blame where blame lies. Because Maggie Thatcher sold Britain off to rich invertors with the public ( including me ) all got punitive shares in the Utility Companies one after the other Gas/ Elec and like me everyone cashed them in because we were skint. The Companies bought the shares and cleaned up. Putin type measures against the Unions which the public backed because they were fed up with strikes was all Orchestrated at the time much the same as now. Caps lifted too order when profits were at ceiling high price. What to do about it is the Question. ?
My Grand kids ask me are we going to be a Poor Family .... had to tell them we have never been rich. fwiw
It is a measure of the contempt this Government has for its voters as to just how useless the people are who appear on Question Time.
This man was particularly hopeless. The loan bit was just cringe-makingly embarrassing. He made Emily Thornberry look like a formidable, intellectual politician.

Chaos over £150 council tax rebate as town halls warn IT hitch may delay payouts for months
Twenty million households eligible for a council tax rebate of £150 could have to wait months for the money to arrive as councils across the country struggle with IT issues.

Whereas the reality is that that is largely irrelevant to the current crisis. That is pain further down the road.
Say Nay in May....
