I love all sorts of music (apart from opera). Most of my collection is probably punk & metal, but I have a few thousand soul/funk/R&B tunes.
Born 62. Always TDK-and TDK red, not blue
I'm sure you know 1 & 3 of my tunes. 2 & 5 are US songs that never had the same impact over here. Material were a Chic spin-off, that had 2 lead singers-Nona Hendryx and Whitney Houston.
Halestorm are a Metal band, that also regularly do covers of songs in other genres. The lead singer (Lzzy Hale) aimed to ally the passion of the original (Dolly Parton) with trying to match the great voice of Whitney, with a few less notes
Hey Phil, your CLASS I have had, a gazillion 'gay' friends through life. That's male & female, love them All Richard Brandon's Heaven, was Londons best kept secret, for ages. Fantastic Club, I knew Richard, after (his, not mine University Education) In life, you have take as is, your personal experience, with people. The club, Heaven, packed to capacity always. The women went their, as Safe, Unbothered, to dance, the guys went, well! Doing what gay guys did, I went, because of, and to play, Supreme Music. And, I know plenty from other music genres, ie, another hero Mr Roger Daltry, fantastic fella, was at his 'gaff' which is pretty amazing, earlier this year, its down the road. That's it, best wishes, Paul.
cheers HENDRIK62, a metaphorical genuine handshake, done ,dusted, squashed for all time, thats genuine from my heart & boots. Wish you & family the Merryist Christmas & Happiest New Year. this Bakers Dozen for you mate.
little aside,I am guessing two things. 1.you will be cheering loud & proud for Mr Liam Williams, more than fair enough. I will be screaming, for the other fella, never, for very personal reasons,do I want (Junior) more than any fighter to succeed in any fight, since I had my absolutes (bet) on Mr Marvellous Marvin Hagler to triumph against Tommy the Hitman Hearns, and thats a very very long time ago! 2.But,whats your opinion ? will it,can it go ahead with full crowd & fans Cardiff (Jan 29th) or,is it banjaxxed again, will 'kill me' if no full capacity,I know Junior does not want it like that, pretty sure Mr Williams (with the raucous home support) wont want it either ? your thoughts from down their on the ground. I will post it at the end of this,Hearns landed direct & pure with his best shots,Marvin took them, and triumphed,it lasted only 3 rounds, only way to hear the fight, was Harry Carpenter relaying commentary on a crackly medium wave radio in the very early hours of a Sunday morning (no pics) was impossible to tell who was winning from Harry Carpenters comms,in fact,on the radio it sounded like Hearns was well on top, Hagler was cut, and pj was on the literal floor of his bedroom amongst a sea of vinyl, thinking done my brains! Was a real pick em bout, 10_11 each of two. Well worth a watch, its right at the end of this, in HD
bakers dozen of supreme early 80s funk/soul/disco/ dusty Gems; For HENDRIK62 especially showcasing what was known in the trade as Record Labels! ie the label Are'n'Be records, brilliant,as evidenced by tune 1. Fresh Band Come Back Lover,on vinyl, import 12 inch 33 1/3 rpm, smoking hot tune, the blinking B side ! how it was,40 years ago, memories priceless, pj.
Fresh Band Come Back Lover (US 12 inch Rare Dub Remix) 84 The Limit She's So Divine (12 inch Disco-Funk 1982) Narada (Michael Walden) Divine Emotions (Remix) New York Skyy (with two Y's) was the bands origanel name Show Me The Way (A Shep Pettibone Mix) and, another B side! Yarbrough & Peoples Don't Stop The Music 1980 Disco Purrfection Version Deco Fresh Idea (12" Boogie-Funk 1983) Ocie III What's My Return On Love (12" BoogieFunk 1983) Komiko Feel Alright (12'' version 1982) Intrigue Like The Way You Do It (12" Brit-Funk 1984) Rhyze Just How Sweet Is Your Love (Walker & Royce Touch) got a full re release 2012 its a smokin hot tune. The original,an extended play US import 12 inch on Sam records in 1980 if you like / liked Shalamar (Howard Hewitts voice was pretty dang good) then enjoy this directly below Frico sampling all things Shalamar ,inc Take That To The Bank Frico I Owe You One (Frico Tribute To Shalamar edit) WORLD PREMIERE Share The Night [Club Mix] (HQ) white label promo (dj only) late 82 early 83 then got full release Le Babar Spend The Night it is not as is claimed the original mix ! its a 2017 remix, same tune.
the two tunes,at the end band World Premiere, perfect example of, a Red Hot promo white label dj only 12 inch, that first surfaced,in very small numbers, late 82 early 83, we, thats inc myself, played this relentlesly at the time,LWR 92.5 FM 'Londons Music Station' and a 2017 remix of the same tune by La Barba A very ballsy but illegal Pirate Radio Station taking on directly Capitol Radio (then we relaunched 1982/3) ,and, for anyone remotley interested, the full insider story, multiple recorded archive live show footage, from the early & mid 80s I will share, very soon. I ought to know! the stations mailing address, broadcast relentlessly to London 24/7 was my then home ! Mottingham SE9 I ought to know,I helped build broadcast studios in Rushey Green Catford, and built with only Zak & Danny & Keith & myself (just us four) when LWR relaunched and went 24/7 late summer 1983,92.5 FM stereo ! the broadcast studio on the Pepys estate I ought to know ! sweated blood & tears & plenty more getting that together, never mind the multiple FM transmitters, situated places various, mainly in the Crystal Palace area. How we get away with it ? in short (1) BETTER fm quality transmitter than Capitol Radio! because we had a genius engineer on our side. (2) a genius barrister, who worked out,if we had said quality transmitters, and, made known to the DTi (fella called Eric Gotts prior busted us relentlessy!) both the location of said transmitter (we actually rented the entire roof space and loft) above the Butchers Shop on Church Road Crystal Palace! Thats where the transmitters (some of them,we had multi back ups) were located and available for inspection, that my dear friends, took some Kahoonas, thankfully,Zak & Danny & Keith, were never short in that department,pj wasnt shy then either!
Going to show this thread to my friend Robert who used to run a couple of nights in Glasgow one of them called 'studio 54' so you can pretty much guess the kind of tunes he played, some of the songs above are bringing back great memories, I have never heard that Rhyze song before but it is awesome. Nice one
Also remember going to Heaven when I lived in Beckenham, one time I was there it had huge scaffolding(?) on each side with parachute fabric being blown by wind machines and stuff being projected on it, was like something in a Duran Duran video.
set of 13 for all and everyone some classics, some dusty gems Highly unlikely a certain Pete Tong will be playing any of these,on his friday night headline radio 1 show, way too 'hip' & 'fly' & 'down with Hipsters & Yoof' and he is 61 years old ! funny thing, when he came a wanting & getting a live radio show in the early 1980's he was a devout Soul & Funk & RnB devotee,so he said ! after Christmas,I will share some archive live recorded footage him,me,Tim Westwood and others,be an interesting listen, promise. ps, LWR is back 2021 on digital platform, and the same fella is CEO & owner, that would be Zak Dee,my best & trusted buddy, and his brother Danny,he,we,us,were at this,in the very beginning 1981,82,83,84,85 > For clarity, full details after Christmas LWR had its first fledgling 'trial' broadcasts, on pre recorded TDKC60 cassettes ! a few hours on a Sunday afternoon, from ? Greenwich Park, using a 'dodgy' transmitter and an hgv battery!. Then,as London Wide Radio tentatively live broadcasts direct (no link rigs) from a flat in Lawrie Park Avenue Sydenham. Then, pre Zak & Danny, Johnny Haywood was the boss,it,us,we went live in FM stereo all Saturdays & Sundays, hence London Weekend Radio, from a basement studio in Rushey Green Catford using link rigs, main transmitter could be busted (rarely)studio well hidden and hard to track. when we did get raided & busted, Johnny Pat & Perry, had had enough.Station was off air,and on the floor, then club promoters & djs Zak & Danny Dee came knocking, that is in the full literal sense, early on a Sunday afternoon, knock at door, two fellas standing their,me thinking wtf !,never seen them before, but, they wanted to go for it,a full time 24/7 live to London Radio Station (an illegal pirate !) but with an angle in law,the fact Zak had pulled up in a brand new Porsche 911 kind of persuaded me these fellas had the juice and were serious, and they were.Them two, plus a fella called Keith and me,worked our behinds off, getting this up,running and together. Zak deserves the credit,as he was, when he knocked the door with his brother in 1982 (I was 17)
in most of these remixes, and prior, entire tunes need listening too,as bpm changes & vocals tend to come along,as nice surprises.Anyone that enjoys, this genre, enjoy.
very Merry Christmas goldon. Incredible, my buddy's canine I frequently look after, is Oscar, Oscar Povitch! named after the Russian Composer.
Tis a good time, no music today, besides, Advent Calendars are now done. Will post some more music between 28th & 31st then that will be that.
the real `LWR' biography. This is the thing, in the beginning, a group of people had exactly the same burning passion for the same genre of music, which was horrendously under represented.Meaning,a huge amount of talented brilliant musicians, bands, singers, records, record companies, were all massively under represented.Meaning,in and around London, this genre, my genre, the music genre my friends would 'die for' got practically zero airplay. Do try to understand, this is starting 1981, not even dvds, just vinyl and tdk cassette tapes, all and everything analogue, in 1983 just about the very first 'mobiles' well sort of, about the size of your average shoebox with the carry power pack,I remember because my pal Zak got the first one I ever saw.
A further thing I can state catogoriclly. The following, were doing this for one thing, burning passion and love of the music genre, which includes reggae by the way. Not one of the following, were in this for any kind of ego trip or money. Still now, today, iconic and unknown record labels make the hairs on the back of my neck stand up.The originators, meaning specifically HORIZON F.M. JFM LWR, we were pals, we helped each other, Horizon boss (dj name) Chris Stewart, real name Chris B, Chris had a flat in Camberwell,HORIZON FM was a brilliant radio station, like us broadcast weekends only,Chris was not only a brilliant broadcast dj, brilliant club dj and a genius engineer, he was a top fella.Chris owned Horizon Fm, it was Chris who made the tune, Mysteries, Of The World by MFSB the Horizon theme tune, every single time Horizon went on air,and off air, that song would play, its a pretty iconic tune.Horizon FM did it slightly different (initially) to how we did it.In line of site, of his own home, Chris could see the broadcast studio, transmitter and Ariel array, Horizon FM was cleverly 'hidden' on top of and within one of the iconic Camberwell Tower blocks @ 1982/3. Chris's sidekick was also called Paul, Paul Buick, same mould as Chris, brilliant dj, late 80s Paul went off to the Canaries, (clever move) they were not nearly as fussy over their about a radio station needing a licence. Horizon FM like us doing live broadcasts from London Nightclubs, ie KISSES Peckham, funnily enough the owners son Steve Edwards became an Lwr dj. Chris & Paul were a million percent doing it all, for a genuine live of the music. As we're, equally JFM Station boss Brian Anthony (he looked exactly like a young Keith Richards!) JFM had some very good djs, the stations name was sinonymous with one dj, FROGGY the legend because he could mix records so brilliantly, rip Steve, notable mentions to Graham Gold & Orpingtons Jim Colvin, JFM dj who to came to LWR. Here is the point, at that time, HORIZON FM, JFM & LWR we were not rivals, we all were doing it for the music, we all believed in the same thing, we were genuine friends,we helped each other when any of us got raided, years later, it changed, why? ego tripping wanna be djs with aspirations to be 'superstar' djs (without a genuine love of the music) the following happened more than once; best Pun of my life, it all went Pete Tong! tribes of female admirers apparently brought from nightclubs various to watch a dj do a radio show, on an illegal pirate station, where the broadcast studios needed to be kept secret Every time we got a raid, a transmitter raid bad enough, studio raid much worse, obviously all of the equipment got confiscated, studio raids down to idiot Johnny come lately djs who could not keep their traps shut. But,rewind from that. Best example ever, of never judging a book, by its cover (public perception) is; Mr Steve the nugget Davis,Steve was reigning World Snooker Champ, he won it, 81,83 & 84,and three more times in the 80s. From a working class family out of Plumstead SE18 Price up the Odds! The reigning World Snooker Champ wants to come and do a live Saturday afternoon Radio Show on the London Renegade Pirate Station LWR 92.5 fm, and he did, and he is amazing (why) one of the funniest friendliest most self deprecating fellas I ever met, do you know what Steve spent his monies on? Records,a music collection to die for, he adored, soul, funk, rnb, and Punk, and he obviously spent some monies on the stunning guards red porsche he pulled up in, the fella was different class, and to my delight and surprise, loved a punt! He was their to do a, live radio show with 'Johnny holding his hand' which was not necessary as Steve was as good a natural dj as he was snooker player, me, half an eye on a horse race! Steve says quietly off air, he and Barry Hearn loved a punt on the gee gees! That day, it was either Echoes, Melody Maker or NME music magazines of the time, they sent a reporter and photographer to record Steve Davis legend reigning World Snooker Champ djing on 'naughty' pirate radio station LWR, all published with pictures, it's out their somewhere. Even better, Steve Davis is a legit dj today, has a legit radio show today, his passion, was, is music, the fella is amazing, All Verbatim, gold memories. Going to try, to the best of my abilities,to convey the weekly hyped effort, it took to get the show, on the road. From a Tues to be able to broadcast Sat's & Sun's. broadcast studio in place, with a link rig transmitter in place, (switched off) but always being tuned, refined, big shout to rebel rock band roadie and engineer Pat Sinclair, who let us bury the studio in his Catford pad, and loved the naughtiness of it all, and his buddy, dj Perry Daniel's. Then, having at least minimum 1 pref more, high power fm stereo transmitters ready for a Friday night installation, every single week, Keith and I drove all over London, all night, different location most weeks, set up and install the lot, and in reverse, early hours of a Monday, uninstall the lot, if we hadn't been busted/raided.Intense and stressy x 100.Not just that, when we switched the whole lot on, for a test, we were beyond paranoid the signal was pure, strong and never ever not once caused any interference.I will endeavour to put up, some short multiple live recorded broadcast footage, from the early mid 80s,feat Westwood, Tong, Carl Cox, yours truly & others, I try put that up, New Years Eve. pj did many of the voice overs for the adverts you will hear, along with a paid professional voice over professional called Mr Bill Mitchell, we paid him, he had a very distinctive deep gravel voice. dj rosta, it grew too I think 7 Paul's on it, one of them me! Only the non smart ego trippers used their real surnames! Live on an illegal pirate, not the smartest thing to do, using real names. A funny final close, a dj who had a legit show, on legal radio, came to us, we had more listeners! He was brilliant, went to America, dj name (for us) on my Girls lives goldon Oscar J Jennings 😉 (those in red, sadly rip)

LYRICAL CLUE
Baby, this time I know
Yes you fooled around
And you fell in love
Honey, I'll tell you so
Yes you fooled around
And you fell in love
Boy, you came along
And you took my heart
Gave it quite a start
You had a love, fit like a glove
Yes, it was the perfect love
Don't get me wrong
But I've heard that song
I've seen that dance
And I've known romance
All this to say, it's a new day
I've spoken to the owl, the jig is up!
Baby, this time I know
Yes you fooled around
And you fell in love
Honey, I'll tell you so
Yes you fooled around
And you fell in love
Now, there you go
You found a toy, that brings you joy
The love I feel it still reamins
But you're not the same
I've seen the change
You've been acting strange
I feel the pain
I can't stand the strain
What can I do
I still love you
Wanting you, needing you, holding you,
Loving you

I'm sure you know 1 & 3 of my tunes. 2 & 5 are US songs that never had the same impact over here. Material were a Chic spin-off, that had 2 lead singers-Nona Hendryx and Whitney Houston.
Halestorm are a Metal band, that also regularly do covers of songs in other genres. The lead singer (Lzzy Hale) aimed to ally the passion of the original (Dolly Parton) with trying to match the great voice of Whitney, with a few less notes
I have had, a gazillion 'gay' friends through life.
That's male & female, love them All

The women went their, as Safe, Unbothered, to dance, the guys went, well! Doing what gay guys did, I went, because of, and to play, Supreme Music.
And, I know plenty from other music genres, ie, another hero Mr Roger Daltry, fantastic fella, was at his 'gaff' which is pretty amazing, earlier this year, its down the road.
That's it, best wishes, Paul.

2.But,whats your opinion ? will it,can it go ahead with full crowd & fans Cardiff (Jan 29th) or,is it banjaxxed again, will 'kill me' if no full capacity,I know Junior does not want it like that, pretty sure Mr Williams (with the raucous home support) wont want it either
? your thoughts from down their on the ground.
I will post it at the end of this,Hearns landed direct & pure with his best shots,Marvin took them, and triumphed,it lasted only 3 rounds, only way to hear the fight, was Harry Carpenter relaying commentary on a crackly medium wave radio in the very early hours of a Sunday morning
(no pics) was impossible to tell who was winning from Harry Carpenters comms,in fact,on the radio it sounded like Hearns was well on top, Hagler was cut, and pj was on the literal floor of his bedroom amongst a sea of vinyl, thinking done my brains! Was a real pick em bout, 10_11 each of two.
Well worth a watch, its right at the end of this, in HD

the two tunes,at the end band World Premiere, perfect example of, a Red Hot promo white label dj only 12 inch, that first surfaced,in very small numbers, late 82 early 83, we, thats inc myself, played this relentlesly at the time,LWR 92.5 FM 'Londons Music Station' and a 2017 remix of the same tune by La Barba
A very ballsy but illegal Pirate Radio Station taking on directly Capitol Radio
(then we relaunched 1982/3) ,and, for anyone remotley interested, the full insider story, multiple recorded archive live show footage, from the early & mid 80s I will share, very soon.
I ought to know! the stations mailing address, broadcast relentlessly to London 24/7 was my then home ! Mottingham SE9
I ought to know,I helped build broadcast studios in Rushey Green Catford, and built with only Zak & Danny & Keith & myself (just us four) when LWR relaunched and went 24/7 late summer 1983,92.5 FM stereo ! the broadcast studio on the Pepys estate
I ought to know ! sweated blood & tears & plenty more getting that together, never mind the multiple FM transmitters, situated places various, mainly in the Crystal Palace area.
How we get away with it ? in short
(1) BETTER fm quality transmitter than Capitol Radio! because we had a genius engineer on our side.
Marvin Hagler v Tommy Hearns in HD only, only just under 4 minutes of one of boxings most epic bouts, both very World World Class
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HL2a2-8OHdg
set of 13 for all and everyone
some classics,some dusty gems
Highly unlikely a certain Pete Tong will be playing any of these,on his friday night headline radio 1 show, way too 'hip' & 'fly' & 'down with Hipsters & Yoof' and he is 61 years old !
funny thing, when he came a wanting & getting a live radio show in the early 1980's
he was a devout Soul & Funk & RnB devotee,so he said !
after Christmas,I will share some archive live recorded footage
him,me,Tim Westwood and others,be an interesting listen,promise.
ps, LWR is back 2021 on digital platform, and the same fella is CEO & owner, that would be Zak Dee,my best & trusted buddy, and his brother Danny,he,we,us,were at this,in the very beginning
1981,82,83,84,85 > For clarity,full details after Christmas
LWR had its first fledgling 'trial' broadcasts, on pre recorded TDKC60 cassettes ! a few hours on a Sunday afternoon, from ?

As we're, equally JFM Station boss Brian Anthony
(he looked exactly like a young Keith Richards!)
JFM had some very good djs, the stations name was sinonymous with one dj, FROGGY the legend because he could mix records so brilliantly, rip Steve, notable mentions to Graham Gold & Orpingtons Jim Colvin, JFM dj who to came to LWR.
Here is the point, at that time, HORIZON FM, JFM & LWR we were not rivals, we all were doing it for the music, we all believed in the same thing, we were genuine friends,we helped each other when any of us got raided, years later, it changed, why? ego tripping wanna be djs with aspirations to be 'superstar' djs (without a genuine love of the music) the following happened more than once; best Pun of my life, it all went Pete Tong! tribes of female admirers apparently brought from nightclubs various to watch a dj do a radio show, on an illegal pirate station, where the broadcast studios needed to be kept secret
Every time we got a raid, a transmitter raid bad enough, studio raid much worse, obviously all of the equipment got confiscated, studio raids down to idiot Johnny come lately djs who could not keep their traps shut.
But,rewind from that.
Best example ever, of never judging a book, by its cover (public perception) is;
Mr Steve the nugget Davis,Steve was reigning World Snooker Champ, he won it, 81,83 & 84,and three more times in the 80s.
From a working class family out of Plumstead SE18
Price up the Odds!
Then, having at least minimum 1 pref more, high power fm stereo transmitters ready for a Friday night installation, every single week, Keith and I drove all over London, all night, different location most weeks, set up and install the lot, and in reverse, early hours of a Monday, uninstall the lot, if we hadn't been busted/raided.Intense and stressy x 100.Not just that, when we switched the whole lot on, for a test, we were beyond paranoid the signal was pure, strong and never ever not once caused any interference.I will endeavour to put up, some short multiple live recorded broadcast footage, from the early mid 80s,feat Westwood, Tong, Carl Cox, yours truly & others, I try put that up, New Years Eve.
pj did many of the voice overs for the adverts you will hear, along with a paid professional voice over professional called Mr Bill Mitchell, we paid him, he had a very distinctive deep gravel voice.
dj rosta, it grew too
I think 7 Paul's on it, one of them me!
Only the non smart ego trippers used their real surnames!
Live on an illegal pirate, not the smartest thing to do, using real names.
A funny final close, a dj who had a legit show, on legal radio, came to us, we had more listeners! He was brilliant, went to America, dj name (for us) on my Girls lives goldon
Oscar J Jennings 😉
(those in red, sadly rip)
@misterpj
Excellent post, most interesting.
Have a lovely Christmas Paul.
