    Happy New Year, time for a bit of reflection (feeling a bit emotional!)

    Start of the new year and on reflection the past 7 months since I stared to actually make an effort with my game with depositing £80 on the 18th June 2011 and incorporating BRM is starting to show how important solid BRM is for any player at any level and what a differance it can make.
    I am not an amzing player, but anyone with a solid BRM and a solid strategy for NL4 or/and £1 DYM's can make money for the pub or whataver )
    Variance killed me at times over the last 7 months, and you do start to question it all, but over the long term you can see the theory of "it's rigged" is all BS.
    I have been on really bad runs where no matter what hand I have, I just can't win.
    Then all of a sudden you just keep on winning!

    I have been studying the game a lot and has really helped me plug leaks and look at the game from another perpespective. I suppose the most important thing I have learned is controlled aggression. We are constantly being told that you have to be aggressive to get anywhere and yes this is true but you need some control and all out aggression just ends up as mistakes and spew !

    I started playing NL4 and have moved up to NL8/10 and am now playing £2-3 DYM and with a DYM BR of £90ish I am looking to get to and stay and grind £5 level. Still playing the mini events but will probably move up to the £250 GTD and maybe some £11 BH.

    As for aims, just want to keep on improving my all round game and move up the cash levels and manage some nice MTT finishes. Would also like this year to attend an SPT event and also see if I can sat into a big event and TID )

    hi smarr

    the 5% rule is basically,
    whatever you are playing,cash tournies,dym,s etc

    ,you never play with more than 5% of the money in your sky account.
     so if you have say £50 in yours.
    you shouldn,t be puting in anymore than £2.50 at any one time.,

    it,s basically a safety net to stop you going broke.

    mind you it,s very easy to say it,
    but not so easy to carry it out!

    in my case,i play £3.30 dym,s
    my bankroll(money in my sky poker account) is around £350,

    so each game i play is costing 1% of my b/roll
    as i am playing 5/6 tables i am risking 5 to 6% at any one time.

    a cash table example would be;
    for a 2p/4p game;
    to play comfortably and to the 5% rule;

    you should have £80 in your poker account
    (if you load up the max 4 that table,being £4.00)

    some would argue that 5% is a bit low,
    so lets say you had £40 in your account
    and playing 2p/4p n/limit cash
    and you load up the max £4.00
    (you are now risking 10% on that game.)

    which is ok.
    but you only need 2 or 3 bad sessions,
    and your £40 soon becomes £30

    if you can stick to the 5% rule,that,s ideal.
    if you can,t,...try not going above 10%,
    and that should be fine.

    good luck smarr

    Well, well, well here we are again - updating with some good news - only a little bad

    DYM- Getting there, but I really don't know how much more I can take of playing these DYM games that
    always require getting cards or shoving and getting through
    Sorry but there really ain't any skill to these, I think you could teach DYM basics to a 10 year old
    No offence to any DMY REGS, which I am a DYM Reg of sorts but you play very little poker in these!
    Obviously I am going to get lots of flack, but like I say I respect the players that do make money because
    it does require so much discipline.

    keep it up m8
    you're doing great
    win % on dyms are good - but does show you how hard it is to make any significant profit at the lower levels.
    I am re-thinking my aim to concentrate on dyms this month (when I can be bothered to play that is - busy month) given the volume you've put in. I'll only be on the £1.15 level I think.

    Excellent thread Rancid, keep up the good work.

    It's always great to see a self-confessed former losing novice work hard to turn things around and successfully become a profitable player.

    I think until you get to £3-5 then it's a slow grind, even when your winning at £1 level it still feels like you treading water
    Think you can make a little bit of money if your grinding £3 or £5 but there's some nice money at the £11 level I feel - I could play that level now but I am a great believer in grass roots traiining )

    I have had to make some changes to make my DYM game just to make it profitable, and it's worked, hopefully!
    There are some good players at £3 level but there's also a lot of bad )
    Sharkscope is brilliant and really helps identify fish and sharks, worth the purchase.
