Hi
Its possible Rich hasnt been in the office, I am sure as soon as he sees the pm he will contact you
I saw today as I was channel-flicking the repeat of Sunday's Primo. Withtin the usual mess of poker ramblings, I heard you pose me a question; whether I believe that William Shakespeare of Stratford-upon-Avon actually wrote the publicised works accredited to him. Forgive me, but for mystery's sake, I wish for my views on this issue to remain private. It is also for mystery's sake that I am a tad annoyed at DP for revealing my true identity. Alas, I shall get over it. I will however try to explain why one might be tempted to suspect that William Shakespeare was no more than a frontman for the true author to protect his (or her) identity.
"The writer", as I shall henceforth be referring to him, displays in his work a knowledge of contemporary science, medicine, astronomy, rhetoric, music, and foreign languages. He would have had a higher education. There is no evidence of William of Stratford having such an education. It is widely assumed that William Shakespeare studied at King's New School in Stratford, despite there being no attendance records for him. Had he studied here, there is no way he could attain the knowledge and vocabularly (30,000 words odd) he is supposed to have had. The best graduates of Oxbridge at the time had a vocabulary of only around 10,000 words. "The writer" would have also been a well travelled man, whist William of Stratford never left the country, and rarely left the south. Furthermore, there are no letters written by William of Stratford known to exist. Just looking at the man's signature shows that writing his own name was a difficult task for him... Oh yeah, and his children couldn't read or write. Not surprising considerring there being no record of their father ever owning a book.
O.K. I feel I have touched on the "how", now for the "why". Simply put, it's all politics. As I have suggested by my earlier ramblings (once I start, it is terribly difficult to stop), it was an aristicrat who wrote Shakespeare's works. It would have been damaging to "the writer's" public image to be seen to publish plays with such strong political messages that went against the rest of the aristocracy. Alright so this last bit might seem a tad rubbish, but I will have to remind you here that I am only 18 years old. I am by no means an expert in Shakespeare or the authorship debate. A wise man explained it to me once, but I've forgotten now.
I feel like my totally unbiased commentary may have given away my true feelings on the matter. However, this is all merely the tip of the iceberg. I would suggest reading up on the Shakespeare authorship question on wikipedia. If you can trawl throught the whole thing you're a better man than me. I use the term "man" loosely.
I might add that in America the possibility that someone else wrote the work of Shakespeare is much more widely aknowledged than over this side of the pond, because the people at the top would have much more to lose than the yanks. That wise man explained to me how, but I forget again. Wikipedia says that "mainstream scholars have ignored the subject in order to protect the economic gains that the Shakespeare publishing world has provided them." I am sure it goes higher up than this. For one thing, why would anyone ever go to Stratford otherwise?
"Facilities for conferences and smaller business venues are excellent."
I'm sold.
But it did remind me that the RSC is based in Stratford, and they'd look a bit silly if Shakespeare were exposed. Maybe I should have posted this in Area 51...
