Something to debate...

Hi everyone

One of the things that Sky Poker is known for is a strong UK community of players. We do have players from elsewhere but mainly we are a UK poker site.

We'd be interested to see your thoughts on the pro's and cons's of this please.

What's good and bad about this?

Thanks

I thought it was ALL UK based players from the start?
It'll keep the Mods busy if you open it up to others countries.
I've seen a lot of nationalality based abuse on other sites, but would be good to play against people from other parts.

One of the disadvantages is that if you're playing at stupid O'clock in the morning, there's hardly anyone else on the site. I've been on here at 5am and seen 80 people logged in, 20 seated, and there's only 2 or 3 cash tables running with someone waiting in a Sit 'n' Go...

Oh ok i didn't realise, thanks for letting me know.
Although i did play with someone a while ago whose location said Spain and i asked them if this was true and they said yes.
Perhaps they were close to Gibraltar ??
    Cheers

nothing wrong with it all the spanish and russian players are rubbish on other sites so invite um in lol. I did have a scottish man complaining that the site is set up for english players to win though in the chat box so you might have a lot of them complaining the site is fixed but they have tight purse strings also!

And i have noticed a few foriegn players recently which used to be quite rare so for some reason what ever your doing there coming to the site.

Hi, does this post infer that Sky is looking at the possibility of expanding the number of countries, from which players are eligible to join?

Personally having spent the majority of my time playing an international poker site then the only -ve is language. By that I mean that English (No offence to the Scottish or Welsh) needs to be the only language that is allowed anywhere on the site. It is really annoying when people from other countries converse in their own tongue.

As Evil says the +ve would be the numbers of players would increase in the small hours due to time zone differences.

That's not why we asked to be honest Woogie.

We just wanted to hear what people thought.

    Thank you.

Obv accessibility.  Would I prefer to play in a bigger community (ie more money/bigger guarentees/varied game) obv yes.  But the experience of online is quite intangible/robotic to begin with.  So it is refreshing to have a tighter community of people.

Also higher likelyhood of retention in the game.  You can spew off w/e and know that, in all likelyhood, the money is not too far away.  Factor in a little of the economy at home aswell.

Off the back of sky being a UK poker site, this forum and the channel have grown.  That can really only be because of the more immediate/accessible nature of the site.

I've moved my roll (lol and gone broke/rebuilt) on many sites.  I have never felt a passing intrest in them personally, they are just a medium to play.  But Sky does somehow get you invested on a personal level.

This coming from someone who rarely plays on here anymore :p  (but that is simply down to other issues.)

May be missing the point here, but is it not the simple case of more the merrier?...more players = more games/action.

I feel Sky Poker would have to fulfil its potential 1st before going to a wider scale, but the changes are slowly coming in and enhancing the site.

If it is limited, can you just swop Wales & Scotland for say France & Spain. TY.

Personally as Tony G once said, "Bring on the Russians." In general their great value, obviously the odd good one so many im being sterotypical.

Anyways in general sky listens to its customers much more and is much more interactive with comps and the tv channel. I dont think wed every see stars offering free entry to the sunday millions for answering a quick question on a tv channel hidden in the gaming and dating section of sky.

On thing i would say is id like to see the channel moved to the sports section and more live action shown. I respect that this would obviously be an expense but i rekon would increase viewers, couldnt sky poker take over that game that Sky Sports show within the same contract?

Id also like to see whole cards on live streams of SPTs again respect the expense of this but even a 20 minute delay and some whole cards would be epic. Would add so much more to the experiance of watching.

Also will sky ever start running sats to the GUKPT events again, and if so it would they be able to show highlights on tv?

Would the fact that a  lot of countries now use the Euro put people in Europe off from joining a site that uses the Pound? I see from that list it is possible to play on Sky from mainland Europe but would like to know the figures. Right now there are 1741 online I'll bet it's less than 200 from Europe.

Looks like I may be in a minority on this one, but for me one of the strongest draws to playing on Sky is that it is UK (in the main) only.

I think if it was to open up to more countries it would have a detrimental effect to the community aspect of the site which for me is the strongest thing the site has going for it.

Obviously from a business point of view it makes perfect sense as more traffic = more profit so I guess as the site continues to grow and improve it's pretty much innevitable this will happen.  I just hope the community is not forgotten / ignored as the machine becomes more corporate.

Depends how you define community really, argueaby the fact we all call ourselves poker players makes us part of the 'Poker Community'.  But that's very different from what Sky has created within the UK.
