Nadine Dorries says BBC licence fee will be scrapped

It is probably better to come up with a plan B, before scrapping plan A.
The 10th Culture Minister in the last 10 years. Apparently on a mission to defund Culture.

What next? Home Secretary to defund the Police? Foreign Secretary to declare war on Britain? Prime Minister to ignore his own Ministerial Code?

'It may not be a lot for Gary Lineker!' Ex-BBC chairman Lord Grade warns £159 licence fee is 'too much money' and broadcaster is 'living in a dream world' as he suggests BBC2 and BBC4 should be axed in funding overhaul

Lord Grade, said the sum 'may not be a lot for Gary Lineker' but it was for ordinary Britons, as he called the annual, universal levy 'a regressive tax'.

You'd have to visit a pig farm at feeding time to hear the squealing Nadine Dorries faced: HENRY DEEDES watches the Culture Secretary serving notice on the BBC licence fee

    https://video.dailymail.co.uk/preview/mol/2022/01/17/2788002889546613914/636x382_MP4_2788002889546613914.mp4

HENRY DEEDES: The Culture Secretary had come to the House to serve notice on the BBC licence fee. Nervy times for all those phalanxes of BBC execs. Not to mention the velvet-voiced maitre d's at their favoured Marylebone canteens. Rarely do ministers enjoy announcing a budget freeze but in this instance Nadine was raring to make an exception.

Instead of wailing, BBC bosses should embrace the death of the licence fee. It would set Auntie free to prosper, writes former Channel 5 boss DAVID ELSTEIN

DAVID ELSTEIN: If the Corporation's executives manage to take a level-headed view, they will see that this is not a death sentence for the institution. On the contrary, it spells liberation.

Culture Secretary Nadine Dorries confirms the BBC licence fee will be frozen for two years at £159 and launches a review into the future of the levy as the Government rolls out 'Operation Red Meat' policy pledges to save Boris Johnson's premiership

Culture Secretary Nadine Dorries yesterday confirmed the BBC licence fee will be frozen at £159 for the next two years as she also announced a review into the long-term future of the annual levy.

    2 quick points:-

    1. No, she did not announce a "review into the long-term future of the annual levy". She announced that, on or before 2027 there would be a review. But that there would be no discussion about the TV Licence. Because (according to her) in 2027 that will be gone. So some of the options will not be on the table

    2. She announced that "the era of state-run TV is over". Isn't that rather the point? The state has never run the BBC. It has created mechanisms to fund it. But it does not run it. However much some Conservatives think it should.

PS-any Tory who thinks that in 2027 there will both be a Tory Government and (if there is one) that it will bear any resemblance to the current Government is living in a different world to me.

Will the B.B.C. appear in " Another one bites the Dust " ?

Not the Government removing the Cash Cow it's the Lambs in the Licence fee Slaughter house.

If the B.B.C. are so Good then why rely on the Public Cash Cow let the viewers that watch their channels pay for it, they will Gloria Gaynor into the future, till then, yet again Private Company being bailed out by the Tories being given till 2029 to stand on their own two feet.

I listened to a bit of it on the telly yesterday.
It seems that she had made some announcements prior to yesterday, which got her in the sh1t with The Speaker.
One of which was that this period of funding which ends in 2027, would be the last.
However she backtracked from that, yesterday in Parliament.

She maintained that everything is up for discussion, and nothing has been decided.

    Simple reason for that.

Her role was purely to provide the next 5-year-plan.

She decided that firstly she could announce this via Twitter, rather than Parliament. And secondly, that she has the power to decide on the BBC's future. Which she does not.

There is a reason why there have been 10 Culture Ministers in the last 10 years. It is because it is the job given to someone too stupid even to get the other, slightly less terrible, jobs in Government.

What exactly are they trying to accomplish?

The B.B.C. to get some bottle & come off the bottle

No longer Investigative Journalist for B.B.C. digging out Kate Aide, sleaze on their door step brushed under the carpet, troll the web other station as it's pooled reports second hand news from other Countries bound to be mis-information along the way.
Had long run Clarkson going on jollies and other high paid share holders milking the machine, now the cow is fighting back " Good on ya Shella "

I am glad we have an expert.
So is the plan to phase out the tv licence?
Or do they plan to continue with the licence fee, and keep the money, rather than giving it to the BBC?
Will they continue with the licence fee, give less of the proceeds to the BBC, and keep the balance?
What seems certain is that they will give less money to the BBC.
This will mean cuts to the service.
What do you think they should cut?

It is patently unfair that we all pay the same licence fee, whether we watch BBC or not.
Although any alternative method of funding would mean less revenue for the BBC.

They certainly share the money out Mafia Boss mugging old people Snow job cover-ups of nasty people not the respectable establishment it used to be. You support them, then you pay the licence fee. I don't drive a car why should I pay road tax or buy a Driving Licence. Like Internet you pay for the provider YOU choose.

The took the money from the majority but did not support them in Brexit very impartial.

The BBC has long faced accusations from conservatives of liberal and left-wing bias.[214] Accusations of a bias against the Premiership of Margaret Thatcher and the Conservative Party were often made against the BBC by members of that government, with Margaret Thatcher herself considering the broadcaster's news coverage to be biased and irresponsible.[215] In 2011, Peter Sissons, a main news presenter at the BBC from 1989 to 2009, said that "at the core of the BBC, in its very DNA, is a way of thinking that is firmly of the Left".[216] Another BBC presenter, Andrew Marr, commented that "the BBC is not impartial or neutral. It has a liberal bias, not so much a party-political bias. It is better expressed as a cultural liberal bias." Former BBC director Roger Mosey classified it as "liberal defensive."[217][218][219] The BBC was accused of propaganda by conservative journalist and author Toby Young due to what he believed to be an anti-Brexit approach, which included a day of live programming on migration.[220]

I am not arguing about any of that.
Although Toby Young has some issues of his own.
I didnt want a lecture about the past.
My questions were about the future.
I have already said that the way they are currently funded is unfair to some people.
