Boris plots 'Churchillian' return to No10 as he hits 50 MP backers in bid to replace Liz Truss - and offers olive branch to odds-on favourite Rishi Sunak to 'get back together' and take the fight to Labour... but other Tories vow to QUIT if he wins
Boris Johnson was reportedly plotting an astonishing political comeback last night as he privately urged Conservative MPs - including his rival and odds-on favourite Rishi Sunak - to back him in the race to become prime minister following Liz Truss's humiliating resignation just 44 days into the job. Just weeks after himself being forced out - and telling the House of Commons: 'Hasta la vista, baby!' - Mr Johnson is shoring up alliances by insisting he is the only candidate who can win an election against Labour's Sir Keir Starmer. However he will need the backing of at least 100 MPs if he wants to become only the third prime minister in history to return for a second stint after leaving office, following in the footsteps of his hero Winston Churchill - and Labour's Harold Wilson. While he already has the backing of 50, compared to Mr Sunak's 39, the prospect of a Boris comeback has forced other Tory MPs to threaten to quit and trigger by-elections, with one branding him 'ego-on-sticks' and another telling him to 'go back to the beach.' In a bid to heal divisions, he is reportedly pressing Mr Sunak to reach out and 'get back together'. The remarkable olive branch follows months of feuding after the former chancellor was accused of 'knifing Boris in the back' when he dramatically left his cabinet position, sparking a wave of resignations that ultimately toppled Mr Johnson's premiership.
Boris Johnson thinks only of what is best for Boris Johnson. Not his Party. Not his constituents. And certainly not the country.
MPs get holidays far in excess of everyone else. Let's take about now, as an example.
There are 23 weeks between 21st July and the end of the year. Everyone deserves a holiday. But in those 23 weeks, Parliament only sits half the time-for 11 of those 23 weeks it is "in recess"-that means it does not sit. So MPs are free to hold constituency surgeries or, more likely, go off on holiday.
Where is Boris? On holiday in the Caribbean. After his lucrative Speaking trip to the US. Booked for at least 2 of the 12 weeks where he is supposed to be representing his constituents and his Party at Westminster. Not booked in all those lovely weeks holiday MPs are given.
Just when it suits Boris.
Imagine if a Teacher got a massive pay rise, and increased holidays. And then had better things to do all October than teach kids.
Most politicians are only interested in themselves or own position. The ones that truly care for the greater good either get corrupted and changed or marginalised or destroyed.
if you are to act with the interests of the majority it goes against the interests and power of a small minority who wield a lot of power and will destroy you for doing so.
I don't know where I heard the quote from, but I once read that, politics/elections are like the farmyard animals voting for the butcher.
It's very true we wanted Bojo gone then we got Truss then we wanted her gone then Bojo might come back or someone else we would likely want gone.
You can say it's time for a change of government, and we could all debate that or agree or etc but I would be very surprised if when that change of government happens be it next week next month or a decade away, we don't find ourselves unhappy with them and wanting someone else.

Just to add to this. Boris last attended Parliament-you know the place we pay him to work-in July. So:-
21st July-4th September. House in recess. 5th September-23rd September. Didn't show up for work. 24th September-10th October-House in recess. 11th October-21st October. Didn't show up for work.
Had no intention of showing up for work. But now wants to campaign for PM, so flying back from his holiday to show that he might be willing to do some work.
That would be work campaigning for Boris. Not for his Constituents.
What is interesting (at least to me) is that nearly all of the current Cabinet have not declared for anyone. The only major Cabinet Member to declare so far is Rees-Mogg.
Looks very much to me like the Cabinet are preparing to give a bit block of support for 1 candidate to try and settle things, to ensure that we have a PM elected by 357 people. Not tens of thousands of Members of the Party. And certainly not the General Public.
To me, the kingmaker does not look like Hunt. It looks very much like Mordaunt.

Boris now has 3 Cabinet Ministers. Penny Mordaunt not moving very fast. Nobody has declared that they are running yet.

I probably wasn't making myself sufficiently clear.
I cannot see Penny Mordaunt getting to 100 as things stand. But whoever she and her supporters endorse is likely to win.
I am not sure how this would help. Arent both Boris and Rishi likely to reach 100 nominations? If so, it will be down to the members. Unless there is some skulduggery in the meantime.
Meanwhile, current rumour doing the rounds is that Rishi has offered Boris the position of Home Secretary to stand with him...
I read an article earlier suggesting that Boris has offered Rishi the position of Chancellor.

The last election for Leader took months. This time, they are promising that, without knowing how the votes will go on Monday, there will definitely be a new PM in place by next Friday. So-in theory-4 days to decide who are the top 2, run a vote of its Members, most of which are Pensioners (and many will not have Computers or be computer literate), count that vote, verify it (I would love to know what security is in place to stop fraudulent votes), and have a new PM in place. There won't be time for the Members to hear, never mind digest, the relative merits of each Candidate. In less than a working week. Even though nothing of the kind has ever been done here before. While also running the country.
On the assumption that they are not delusional, there has to be an agreed plan of action. It's just that they don't want to tell anyone what it is.

Looks like it will come down to two who reach the threshold - Sunak & Johnson.
And then it goes to the Tory Party Membership.... the very people who voted for car-crash Truss last time.
God help us.
Unfortunately.
