The people in Gaza voted for Hamas, knowing it's a violent terrorist organisation with a stated goal of destroying Israel.
The attacked Israel knowing there would be a massive retaliation, but they didn't care about the innocents getting caught up in it.

    You reap what you sow.

The last election was in 2006.

Elections for the Palestinian National Authority (PNA) were held in Palestinian Autonomous areas from 1994 until their transition into the State of Palestine in 2013. Elections were scheduled to be held in 2009,[1] but was postponed because of the Fatah–Hamas conflict. President Mahmoud Abbas agreed to stay on until the next election,[2] but he is recognized as president only in the West Bank and not by Hamas in Gaza. The Palestinian National Authority has held several elections in the Palestinian territories, including elections for president, the legislature and local councils. The PNA has a multi-party system, with numerous parties. In this system, Fatah is the dominant party.

The first legislative and presidential elections were held in 1996; the first local elections in January–May 2005. Previous (failed) Legislative Council elections were held in 1923 under the British Mandate, and previous municipal elections were held in 1972 and 1976, organized by the Israeli government.[3]

The Palestinian Legislative Council passed a law in June 2005 (signed by Abbas on 13 August 2005), to increase the number of members from 88 to 132, with half to be elected using proportional representation and half by plurality-at-large voting in traditional constituencies.[4] The January 2005 presidential election was won by Abbas of Fatah, while the January 2006 legislative election was won by Hamas. In 2007, a presidential decree abolished the constituency seats with all seats to be elected from a national list, and prohibited parties which did not acknowledge the PLO's right to represent the Palestinian people (specifically Hamas) from contesting the election.[5] An opinion poll suggested that a majority of Palestinians supported the change, while Hamas called it illegal.[6]

The other main Party alongside Hamas is Fatah. Which is the political wing of the PLO. Which Israel has vowed to destroy in exactly the same way as Hamas.

At the weekend Netanyahu explicitly vowed to destroy Hamas both in its terrorist activities and its ability to govern.

The former is totally understandable. The latter is not. Unless you believe every country has the right to remove other countries' elected governments and invade if they do not like them. Like, say, Russia in Ukraine.

PS. It saddens me when news organisations comment on the differing sides use of rockets without providing context.

Israel has a multi-£billion weapons system, and is able to target with precision. Hamas have little money, and shop in the Middle of Lidl. The reason that their weapons are "indiscriminate" is because they are a bit rubbish

That reminds me of the late, great, Danny Blanchflower.

After he had retired from playing, he was (briefly) employed as a summariser for US Soccer in the 1970s.

Asked for his opinion, he said "this game is boring".

You could hear an animated voice in his ear, saying "This is America. Accentuate the positive, accentuate the positive".

His next sentence was a joy-

"I've been asked to point out that this match is positively boring".

On a similar, more upbeat note, many of the World's greatest comedians were/are Jewish. And Jewish humour is great. For example-

"God, you say we are your chosen people. Would you mind choosing someone else occasionally?"

    Exactly this.

More than just World War 2. There has been a long and horrible history of disgraceful persecution against the Jewish race. Lots of terrible actions in many countries in history-particularly Russia, but England too. There was a time when Jews were forcibly expelled from Leeds.

There is a reason why Jews tended historically to seek occupations that they could still practice after being forced from their home. From Law to Tailoring to working precious metals. Simply for self-preservation.

There have been many pogroms throughout history. Where a Race (the Jewish race) have been forced to flee their homes while being threatened, promised that persecution would end if they left a certain area, only for that persecution to continue in the next place.

Terrible. Disgusting. But, sadly, that is exactly what is happening right now.
