Another 3 Bounty Hunters played for no return today. My graph posted on page 8 shows how disappointing my BH results have been during this challenge. Statistically I know I’ve got to start getting the results again sooner or later, long term results are a much better indicator of future results than a month of bad variance.
It’s quite odd in this house at the moment. I’m sat here taking seemingly endless beats and coolers while my other half (who plays on the site as Lea116311) has been on a 10 day heater, she’s often sitting next to me making final tables for fun on her laptop. It’s one of those weird things in poker that the streaks of good or bad luck can last for so long. We’ve got polar opposite streaks running here simultaneously.
My final tournament of the day was a £1.10 freezeout. Even though it was only a small event with 32 runners I was thrilled to actually take it down. I’ll take any MTT win at the moment, a victory can do wonders for your confidence and lead to more success. This was only my second first place of this challenge, the first was in a £2.30 Bounty Hunter with 31 runners back on January 24th. Probably wishful thinking, but hopefully this win marks a turn in my fortunes.
As for the ‘should diaries be in GPC’ debate; I’m on the fence. When I started this there were hardly any other active diaries running, and I don’t think any of them were being updated daily. Since then there has obviously been a big spate of new ones cropping up. It’s true that GPC was very quiet before the diaries came into vogue. Few threads would be of much interest, there was much moaning and the forum was dominated by a small circle of serial posters. The diaries have rejuvenated GPC and many more people are posting than before. However, I don’t think it should be allowed to get to the point where GPC is flooded (much like it was with team threads before Team Talk was created). I think it’s fine to leave things as they are for now, but if new diaries continue to be born I feel a new forum section will have to follow eventually. Feb poker points 409.
A couple of final table runs minimised my losses, but variance gave me a kicking again and this was my 6th consecutive losing day. I don’t want this diary to be a bad beat bore so I’ll resist the temptation to post today’s 3 sick bad beats in huge/crucial MTT pots.
I’m occasionally asked why I don’t play poker in the evening. Well, it’s due to my work hours. I’m a self-employed milkman making traditional doorstep deliveries. I need to be up very early, my alarm is set to 1-30am 6 days per week. Most days I’m back home between 10-30am and midday. If I’ve got nothing better to do I’ll register in MTTs from then until about 4-00pm (a deep run in a later tournament would go well past my 7-00pm bedtime) . Unfortunately during those hours not many tournaments run on Sky, the fields are small and many of the participants are daytime regulars with a reasonably solid game. There are only 2 tournaments with double figure buy-ins available; the £11 Bounty Hunters at 2-00pm and 4-00pm.
To be honest I’d much rather play in the evening when there’s a far wider choice with bigger fields and a higher proportion of inexperienced players at the lower buy-ins. I’ve tried taking afternoon sleeps and staying up for evening tournaments but it always messes up my body clock, I end up feeling like a zombie and playing awfully. Hence I’m unable to participate in Main/Mini events, SPT satellites, Viva Las Vegas events, forum DTD, the Jackpot, etc. etc. and I don't watch the live shows on ch.865. Most Saturdays I'll stay up late and play all evening, but when you’ve been up since 1-30am and worked a good 11 hours on your feet it gets harder and harder to concentrate as the night goes on (particularly if a few beers have been consumed!). Due to the limited choice on Sky during my regular playing hours I often multitable across sites, in fact in 2011 I made more profit on a well-known rival site than I did on Sky Poker. This week’s downward spiral continued with no joy in tournaments again today. I got myself well placed for a deep run a couple of times but the cards just weren’t going my way.
I’m finding it impossible to win the big flips. My final hand of the day (posted below) pretty much sums it up. Having been card dead for almost an hour after an early double with KK />QQ we’re coming to the business end of the tournament with 27 runners remaining from 86 entrants. My 18 big blinds is a perfect re-shove stack and I decide to jam my 99 over the utg raiser at this 5-handed table. I’m happy to either take the pot down there or take a flip, the only hands I don’t want to see obviously are pairs TT up. The villain turns over the AT (which is a debatable call in my opinion, flipping at best, often dominated) and we’re off to the races. I love the 876 flop because it gives me an open ender and 3 of the villains 6 outs are now no good. If I can dodge the 3 aces in the deck with 2 cards to come I’ll be back up to 37BB, give myself a workable stack and a good shot at making a deep run. Of course the dreaded A hits on the river, I don't make a straight and it’s elimination for me. This was the first time I’d been all-in and called in the whole tournament, earlier games came to similar ends.
I’ll be back to try again tomorrow, I can’t keep losing these flips and taking sick beats like those yesterday forever, when the deck decides to be a bit kinder I know the results will follow. A bit of run good every now and then would be very welcome, hopefully it's being stored up for a huge heater some time in the future. I’m hoping my balance doesn’t fall back below £86, if it does my BRM rules will restrict me to £1 games again.

I have a good idea why lol, with so many diaries springing up over the last couple of weeks my 'quest' doesn't stay on page 1 for very long now, a couple of hours maybe. I'm very happy though, this forum has sprung into life recently, it's great to see so many people getting involved and posting after a relatively quiet spell.
Yay! My first profitable day for over a week! It was nothing spectacular by any means, but a very welcome step in the right direction. My big hands held up for the most part and I won more flips than I lost, it felt **** good after the non-stop frustration of recent days.
The best result of the day was 4th from 93 with in a Bounty Hunter with 7 head prizes on the way. I'd have loved to win it obviously, but another player at the FT was in ‘god mode’, he had nearly all the chips and was winning every hand he played. When I busted the other 3 of us left were very short, I went out in a standard blind v blind cooler shoving my A3 into AK with 8BB. Another promising run in a 256 runner evening tournament ended with a standard AKs<QQ aipf flip for 24th place.
Poker should be fun, and it certainly was today Feb poker points 466.
There was much promise today but only 6p profit to show for it. In two MTTs I held huge chip leads for two thirds of the tournament only for things to go awry at the sharp end. Having three times as many chips as anybody else midway through a tournament may seem like a good thing, but it doesn’t win you any money and rarely comes to anything in my experience. The winner usually emerges from the middle of the pack in the late stages. I’d rather win all the big pots at the final table than those when most of the field are still playing. It doesn’t matter how well you start in an MTT, it’s all about how you finish. The three hands in my previous post taken from a tourney this afternoon are a fine example. Feb poker points 476.
Bizzare hand from yesterday afternoon. I flop the world (and end up losing of course). Don't think I've ever seen full house vs full house go check-check on the river before. We both thought we were trapping each other, the straight flush/royal flush open-ender must have scared the passive villain and saved me 1885 chips on the river.
Another day of frustration as my month long tournament downswing continues. We all know that in addition to playing well a deep run in a tournament requires winning a big flip or two on the way and holding several times when you’re ahead. Unfortunately I still can’t get those key flips and holds to go my way. Twice today I was all-in for a huge pot approaching the bubble. My QQ v AK and my AJ v KQ (squeeze shove from the SB over 3 limpers), each time my opponent hit on the river and another chance of a deep run eluded me. I didn't manage to claim a single head prize, in my first game I had an opponent all-in preflop with his JJ against my KK, he survived by making a straight.
It’s unreal how long these unlucky streaks can last in MTTs. I don’t mind admitting I’m getting frustrated, yet at the same time I’m pleased with myself for avoiding tilt. As far as I can tell my game hasn’t suffered and I’m satisfied that I’m still playing well. My nitty approach to my BR has protected me from bigger losses. I’ve made many tongue-in-cheek posts in Area51 in my time; the current thread about KK is a typical example. In reality I’m satisfied that the RNG really is random, I know I can’t stay on the wrong side of variance forever. This challenge has been stuck in the mud for a month now. Hopefully the cards will start to be a bit kinder to me soon and I’ll have a chance to get my balance going the right way. I’ll be back to try again tomorrow.
In happier news I’m now certain of making 500 poker points and earning the £5 PTN bonus in addition to the regular C4P bonus, also there’s the chance of a 25% bonus if the SW can get 3rd place in PTN, we're just behind in 4th today. Feb poker points 497.
Great work so far mate, on the bankroll I see your challenge sort of like a boxing match in that right now you're just sparring and trying to stay level, getting a few minor jabs off to stay in the fight but the long term aim is to get that one killer punch in for the knock-out.
Of course right now the sparring is hard work and frustrating but when you get that one big score it'll all be worth it and the confidence you gain will spur you on for further success
When u think about it, your bankroll has more than doubled in just over 6 wks! Which is great! Sounds like u r due a heater! I will always remember, the tail end of last summer I had alot of 'annoying games', where I was getting my money in 'good' and was getting outdrawn by runner, runner etc. Thankfully this changed.
No change; another endless stream of beats and coolers in MTTs for me today. It’s impossible to win while I’m running this badly. My luck was so bad that I quit my session 2 hours earlier than planned to minimise losses. The only bright note was a profit in HU SnG matches with 5 wins from 6.
Thank-you very much to Dude and Del for your words of support. I'll be back to winning ways sooner or later. And I will complete this challenge, no matter how long it takes.
I didn’t have enough spare time to enter any MTTs today so I made do with a few HU STTs. Played well, ran terribly, made a few pence profit.
February was an awful month for me, my second worst and only my 5th losing month on Sky since I joined in November 2009 (see graph below). My fingers are crossed that March goes better.
Day 52 – February 28 th 2012 Closing balance £111.05 I didn’t have enough spare time to enter any MTTs today so I made do with a few HU STTs. Played well, ran terribly, made a few pence profit. Phew, the new month begins with a promising start. I made a profit in all three Bounty Hunters tournament entered and won 2 from 3 HU matches. Also the £5 PTN was credited to my account. Thank-you Sky, I wasn't expecting it to arrive until the C4P bonus came in.
In the first tourney I was chip leader at the hour break with 4 bounties. That in itself was a big relief; the last time I took a head prize was on February 26th. Unfortunately I wrecked my chances not long after the break by making a move against another big stack that back-fired. Three barrelling a missed draw is never a good idea when the villain holds the nuts! Soon after I lost an 88<KQ flip to bust out.
I made the money in the second tournament but could only manage 7th. When the bubble went the average stack was very shallow, with only 9BB left I jammed 9Ts from the button and was unable to improve when called by AQ. Again though, I was pleased to record my first Bounty hunter cash since February 26th.
My big chance came in the 3rd tournament. When the bubble went (only 5 paid) I was chip leader by quite a way and there a couple of weak players at the table. Unfortunately I had to fold KK on the turn in a big hand after putting a lot of chips in the pot. Then I lost another big chunk with my AQs being outdrawn by the Q7o of a calling station. Soon after a sick beat knocked me out in fifth. I jammed my AK over two serial limpers, one of them called off with KTs, flopped the flush and crippled my stack. A hold there would have given me another bounty and a commanding lead. Oh well.
Despite that cruel final hand today has been a great confidence boost and I’m very happy. Overall I feel I ran much better than I have for several days. Although I didn’t make much money I was well placed to go for a win a couple of times. If I can keep getting myself in those positions a win must follow sooner or later.
I’ve got a lot going on over the next few days so I won’t be playing as much as usual.

Note to self;
Keep cool, long term results prove you can beat these games, continue to play your A-game and the results will follow.
Cheering u on m8. GL.
