I waded through the mountain of statistics provided by @chilling

There is 1 important point that comes out of this.

If you live in a London Borough, or a Unitary Authority, you are being provided with meaningful statistics. But, if (like me) you live in a ceremonial County, you do not.

Let's take the traditional area of Essex as an example. But this holds true for all Counties. It could equally be Blackpool and Lancashire.

If you live in (say) the London Boroughs of Redbridge/Havering, you are receiving relevant localised information. If you live in the Unitary Authorities of Thurrock/Southend, ditto.

The rest of Essex is just lumped together. 1.5 million people, spread over 1,500 square miles. Look at a map of Essex. I live in the top right-hand corner. What happens in Harlow (top left, and a known hotspot), Basildon, etc are irrelevant to me. There is little or no interaction between the areas.

This Government clearly has better statistics. They know, at the very least, which Hospital covers all covid-19 patients/sufferers. So-to give Essex as the example-we could have meaningful statistics for Harlow Hospital catchment, Chelmsford, Colchester, Basildon etc. Which would easily provide the equivalent statistics to London Boroughs and Unitary Authorities.

True, but that data was put out.
It will also be out of date,as the numbers will continue to rise minute by minute.
After a three week lockdown, they will likely become more relevant.

I take your point, but they are supposed to be informative.
I’m not quite sure why they are not in alphabetical order, that would then make it easier to search for ones own area, or where relatives and friends live.
Although the figures will constantly change, it gives a guide to were the current hotspots are.
That’s important info , that shows were the NHS are likely to be under the greatest pressure.
For some though, playing on a fruit machine will understandably be the preferred choice.
After all,it’s a free country, usually.
Probably because they are in descending order on the 3rd column :D
Cases /100k population, but only when the pages are also in order :|

I've no time to play fruit machines, I've been working all week.

Next time I'll wait for Essexphil to do a summary. Sometimes less is more.

    For sure.
I was just looking out for areas that some of my friends live in.
And smaller populated areas won’t have 100,000 people living in them.
Which has been highlighted by Phil.

No. It's cases per 100k-there doesn't have to be 100k people.
    So-for example-if 10 cases in 50k people, then 20 per 100k.

Point I was making is people want to know:-

    1. How many people are infected in your immediate vicinity; and
    2. Is your local hospital coping or not

So-for example- how many are infected in, say, York, as opposed to North Yorkshire, which is largely irrelevant to its inhabitants due to the size of the area

Genius New Device Can Kill 99.9% of an Airborne Virus in The Blink of an Eye

Has anyone seen any recent info on this device?
It was in the news about a year ago.
    https://www.sciencealert.com/a-new-device-can-kill-99-9-of-an-airborne-virus-in-the-blink-of-an-eye

Short extract (to avoid scrolling >:) )

"The new device has now revealed a similar effect on viruses, successfully 'zapping and trapping' 99.9 percent of a test virus into submission - all within a quarter of a second."

Or for the techies, The journal of Applied Physics, (with pics/diagrams),
    https://iopscience.iop.org/article/10.1088/1361-6463/ab1466

Some might find the link References 18 & 20 interesting. @VespaPX

I can get stats from my area, cases known, deaths, from GetSurrey. Just need to put in a post code.St.Peters and Ashfords numbers are on there.
Would be grim to follow, so I’ll knock that on the head.

There’s no point in asking when the lockdown is going to end.
    Other things will determine that.
    Why they no listen!

The 3 week review means exactly what it says on the tin.
After 3 weeks the powers that be will decide how many more weeks to add on before another review.
My money is on another three weeksđź’·
    Then repeat as required.

17:58! the BBC have just done it again!

As soon as an awkward question is asked, they cut to the weather

Matt Hancock was asked whether he was going to continue to host meetings
in his office of 10 or more, so no social distancing possible, breaching their own advice.. lets see what the Easter weather will be...FFS

Also..if I'm correct, the figures used and report at the daily briefing for deaths has been consistently accurate using https://www.worldometers.info/coronavirus/

Yet today politically motivated I guess, they report 980, when the data clearly says over 1000....1038.....hmmm
  • chillingchilling Member Posts: 3,774
All the deaths will undershoot. Nearly all countries can’t keep track as there are people dying all the time. Some can put out what they want,it would be very difficult for anybody to check out what is a true figure. I’d suggest impossible.
There’s no point in including recoveries, unless that’s just hospitalized cases, because people will have caught it and recovered without hospitalization.

And Burley asked someone yesterday that the “ Nation” is waiting to see if they go out and about on Monday??
Just because Wales announced their continuation before the Government.
We have been informed the decision was going to be reviewed shortly, otherwise it is as is.
Burley needs to take a day off.
She needs to take in what’s been put out on her own news channel.

No country will have accurate numbers for tests, deaths etc.
I mean, who is going to check if they are accurate.
