I think this stems from writers always wanting to end the current series with a cliffhanger, in the hope of a further series being commissioned. The Networks dont make their minds up of whether there will be a new series, until after the current series has aired. This often results in a cliffhanger, no new series, and viewers left up in the air. Never used to happen in the old days.

Channel 4 has acquired South African detective drama The Cane Field Killings, starring Kim Engelbrecht and Iain Glen. The eight-episode series, which was praised by critics upon its release in South Africa last year, will launch on Channel 4 on April 10th. All episodes become available on All 4 on the same day.
The Cane Field Killings tells the story of a criminal profiler, Reyka Gama (Engelbrecht), who is struggling to comes to terms with her dark past. Having been abducted as a child by farmer Angus Speelman (Iain Glen), Reyka now channels that traumatic experience to enter into the mindset of Africa’s most notorious criminals. The series follows her investigation into a string of brutal murders committed by a serial killer in the sugar cane fields of Kwa-Zulu-Natal.
