Brexit LIVE: Bookmakers slash odds on UK fully rejoining EU by 2026 after major 'catalyst'
BOOKMAKERS have slashed odds on the UK rejoining the European Union as a full member by 2026 following Sinn Fein's Northern Ireland Assembly election success.
Leader Michelle O’Neill described the victory – the first time a non-unionist party has been the largest in Government – as a “defining moment for our politics and for our people”. Now, a spokesperson from Betfred has told Express.co.uk that the election result could act as a “catalyst” for the UK rejoining the Brussels bloc by 2026. Before polling closed, the ‘Rejoin’ odds stood at 12/1. They have since been cut to 7/1.

I dont really see what would have to occur to allow this to happen.
What would be needed is:-
1. A major political party to have this as part of a manifesto pledge; 2. That Party to win the election; 3. A formal application to rejoin; and 4. The EU to accept us back in as though the last 6 years haven't happened
Nothing is impossible in this world. But that is massively bigger than 7/1. That bet is currently about as attractive as the idiots who bet that the World will end by a given date.
It is more realistic for the UK either to join EFTA, or to have some form of relationship with the EU that is sufficiently unique to be electorally possible (on both sides) while having elements of a Free Trade deal. There has to be some way whereby the UK can have Economic ties, without having the political/military ties.

An EEC, if you like. Rather than an EU.
I appreciate that. I couldnt see the connection between Sinn Fein winning and the odds almost halving. Unless the Tories saw it as a way to avoid a United Ireland, but thats never going to happen, well at least not in the near future. Labour dont want to talk about Brexit, and the Lib Dems have shied away from the rejoining question for years. The Tories are still odds on to win the 2024 general election. You would surely want to lay that bet, rather than bet on it.
Long on theory. Long on rhetoric. Non-existent on anything of practical relevance.
The dawn of EU lite? Macron invites Britain to join an alternative 'European political community' with 'full political integration'... one-and-a-half years after Brexit became official
French President Emmanuel Macron today invited Britain to join a new 'European political community' outside the EU. Mr Macron - who was fiercely opposed to Brexit - said this new status would allow the UK to enjoy full political integration within the 27-country bloc, and have a say in crucial decisions. In a keynote speech to the European Parliament in Strasbourg on Monday, Mr Macron said he was all in favour of 'creating what I would call a European political community. 'This new European organisation would allow democratic European nations adhering to our core values to find a new space for political cooperation, and security. 'Joining it would not prejudge future membership of the European Union, and it would not be closed to those who have left the latter'. During a trip to Berlin later in the day, Mr Macron confirmed that Britain would be invited to 'take its full place' in the new community.

The EU has totally changed since Merkel retired. It is now France (rather than Germany) that is the effective leader of the EU.
It seems that the EU (or at least France) finally understands that the EEC and an EU are 2 totally separate things. It is perfectly possible to be in 1 without the other. The key to this will all be in the detail.

The detail wont matter to Mr Farage or the ERG?
Farage is a whiny little baby, who (fortunately) is increasingly irrelevant.
The ERG is more interesting. I doubt they will be so dismissive.
Johnson is in trouble at home. Massive inflation. Massive scandals. Massive ineptitude. They have neither the money nor the will to grip the massive problems facing the electorate.
So this Government will do what all Governments do when in trouble at home. Focus on foreign policy to divert attention. This could do exactly that.
The ERG may well care about political ideology. But they care about their seats more

I am over the moon that he is irrelevant. The fact that some pundits bill him as the most influential British politician in the last 20 years irks me. Boris will get a battering over Sue Gray when it is published, but also the cost of living will start to bite. Nothing much has happened on that yet, just one increased energy direct debit so far. For some reason mine hasnt increased yet. The October increases will make it hurt more as will inflation increases. Their seats is the one thing that the Tories care about.
