Apologies for the spam but i'm finding this really intreaging and interesting , will any of this actually happen NEW: A further UEFA mtg will now take place within the next 24 hours. There will be a motion to formally expel Arsenal and Manchester United from the #UEL and Man City, Chelsea and Real Madrid from the #UCL - meeting will also decide how the competitions will be completed.
As far as I can see from the statement the "Big 6" would still play Premier League football each week, the ESL would run midweek.
The statement confirms intentions for clubs to continue playing in their domestic leagues as usual, but for them, this will replace the Champions League etc, being playing on Wednesday evenings throughout the season.
You would have a situation where the 6 may play weaker sides in the PL as they know at the end of the season their European spot is assured.
In essence it is a breakaway from the Champions League, I may be wrong but the statement definately said the players could play for their clubs domestically
F*** them off immediately, they would simply devalue it as they have every other competition apart from the Prem coz that right now is the holy grail. Once its a smaller comp that doesn't matter they will pay lip service to it but that's it.
Oh and whilst we're on the subject Haysie you are talking shite. It doesn't matter if SMALLER clubs can win the Prem after this its simply devalued. Real fans get that, plastics will never understand.
Superleague tried the franchise path a few years ago. Fortunately my team Castleford were able to secure a franchise after the big 5, Wigan, Saint Helens, Bradford, Leeds and Warrington.
Teams spent that much money to meet the criteria for bidding that by the time the franchises came around for renewal 3 years later, Bradford had gone bust, Wakefield went into administration, London soon followed and the Welsh team had to drop down 3 leagues and start from scratch.
Wigan and Leeds 2 of the games greatest clubs both came perilously close to winding up orders and it was obvious that the experiment had brought the whole game to the brink of disaster
Since the reintroduction of a pyramid system the game has flourished, teams and clubs are run more viably and the sport is healthy. Yes the Toronto Wolfpack fiasco is a reminder that good housekeeping needs to be practiced but when it was mooted last season to look at a franchise system the clubs voted it down overwhelmingly.
I for one will laugh till I p*** my pants when this all comes crashing down around their ears, and it will.
The Premier League can't realistically win in all of this (unless the ESL falls flat on its face)
They could kick out the 6 teams involved, but that will significantly devalue their own product (plus possible legal implications) They can let the 6 clubs do what they want, but that could open the floodgates and an irreversible shift of power in favour of half a dozen clubs.
Whilst I don't necessarily agree with a ESL, it's important to remember that the Premier League has always had money as its primary concern, not the fans (hence it's original inception)
They floated the idea of the 39th game abroad. They have absurd kick off times to pacify the TV broadcasters. Selling off more and more games every season to Sky/BT. They charged £14.95 for the PPV games during the pandemic. They declined to cap away ticket prices for many years despite widespread campaigning by fan groups.
The Premier League have reacted angrily because their whole product and cash cow is now, rightly or wrongly, at risk.
Fans have always been an afterthought in the Premier League era.
Very amusing. Ever since the EPL has started every English club has enjoyed huge ever-increasing financial advantages over clubs from other associations so pardon me for having absolutely zero sympathy for those who are going to be left behind. The outrage on Sky Sports is absolutely golden. Gary Neville in particular lol what a laugh. Crying about fair play, greed and lack of competition? His Salford City buying their way into the league is ok though of course. Pretty sure these grievances wouldn't be aired if Sky or BT had a chance of obtaining the rights to this new league. Everyone in England has lorded it over the rest of us with the constant 'best league in the world' **** for years now and I for one will be praying that this esl causes English football to go completely **** up.
Our 'pub leagues' up here will be unaffected of course.
Sky Sports are the main player in the Broadcasting of the Premier League. The payments are in excess of £1Billion a year.
If the big 6 are removed that will cause chaos. Suppose Swansea were to be promoted by the play-offs and the Relegated 3/4-6 in Championship take their place.
So-you are paying £1billion a year. you lose Arsenal, Chelsea, Liverpool, Man City, Man Utd and Spurs.
And in their place you get:-WBA, Fulham, Sheff Utd, Brentford, Bournemouth and Barnsley.
I think Sky want £950 million back. Even if this season isn't rendered meaningless as Leicester are awarded the title for being only 18 points behind Man City.
Then there is BT Sport. They pay £400-500Million p.a for Champions League/Europa League UK rights. Looks like they may be deprived of all 4 Semis between the 2 Comps, and PSG are awarded the Champions League Trophy by default as they have not (yet) gone over to the dark side.
And Champions League? Let's use England and Spain.
This year? Chelsea, Liverpool, Man City, Man Utd Next year? Leicester, West Ham, Everton, Leeds
This year? Atletico Madrid, Barcelona, Real Madrid, Sevilla Next year? Sevilla, Villareal, Real Betis, Real Sociedad
Who is going to be paying back BT? Because someone will have to. And don't think it will be the EPL, or UEFA. Because they haven't got that sort of money.
And lots of clubs have contracts and loans that rely on next years' TV rights.
