Good playing with you other day pat. (even though you bluffed me) Enjoying the diary keep it up, seems like youve had a good month. Best of luck at the tables.

Nice playing with you too hawk. Are you sure you don't want to coach me for cash haha?

LOL_Raise: I think its a very high ROI for DONs. But over like 3,000 £5.50 DYMs I think I've got a 7% roi or something like that.

Hey guys. At the start of the month I like to take a couple days off from poker to unwind. Last Friday I also had my last uni exam, so I decided to come home on the Saturday for the 4 day weekend. Crazy times ensued. Was lucky enough to catch up with some friends that I hadn't seen in months. To cut it short, the last 4 days have comprised of:

    - Meeting up with friends from home
    - Copious amounts of alcohol
    - BBQ/pool party at friend's mansion
    - 3am Subs
    - Night in Bristol
    - Shopping
    - Eating at the largest buffet in Europe
    - 4am casino trip

My Skypoker gear has arrived, which makes the fact that I'll be playing in the GUKPT superdeepstack next month more of a reality. To get some practice in, I've decided to play a local live MTT at my nearest casino tonight which I'm looking forward to.

I feel refreshed, and ready to get back to the grind tomomorrow. I hope everyone's had a great bank holiday weekend.

Welcome back, sounds like you've had a pretty full-on break!

Yeah, it's great when the gear arrives - shame there isn't more variety but watev.

Which tournie are Sky buying u in2?

I'm due to play GUKPT Coventry in Aug as it was the only one Sky really offered, but I'd be tempted to change it if I can.

Also, what is the largest buffet in Europe?

I've spent the last 2 hours trying to convey my thoughts into a post but after struggling miserably I've decided just to post today's results and attempt a more detailed post tomorrow.

    --

All in all it feels good to be back on the grind after having a few days away. I've been lucky enough to have a great couple of sessions (the first of the month and today).

According to Sharkscope, I only played 35 games. But having an average ROI of 29.9% made for solid results.

Two funny hands which happened under 10 minutes between each other:

I was hoping to rest up a little, but that didn't really happen lol.

The gear arriving was pretty cool. I couldn't help but wear it at the casino for an MTT haa. I'm playing the GUKPT plymouth because it's closer to where I'll be living. And with the leftover, I'll be playing SPT final at nottingham. How have you done in the past with the big tournaments? And how did you find the standard of the players?

The biggest buffet in Europe (I think Europe anyway), is a place called 'za za bazaar' in Bristol. It's literally just a massive place, that holds up to 700 people! Pretty insane really.

    Blimey. http://www.guardian.co.uk/lifeandstyle/2012/jan/27/za-za-bazaar-bristol-restaurant

Curry, Pizza & Chinese all under one roof, nice.

I played UKOPS1 and GUKPT Walsall which I bubbled.

Don't worry about the standard, most live players don't understand stack sizes/bet sizing and station A LOT.

Some live tells are really obv2 - if they look relaxed and happy, it's cos they've got it!

Just take your time and pick your spots - u'll do great.

    I've sent u PM.

Poker wise, some days are a walk in the park. Everything seems to go your way, your QQ holds up against AQ, your AK beats A6 and your 1010 holds up against JQ. Today was not one of those days. However I realise that I've been running way above my expected ROI during the last few sessions. The only way I can (to some extent) control the variance in the long run is to play to the best of my abilitiy, not tilt and play as many games as I can.

Overall a frustrating but eventually rewarding day. I was shocked to see that I hit my 'expected' ROI over the number of games I played: According to sharkscope, 61 games, +$38.54

On a sidenote - I'm avoiding the £11s at the moment, as everytime I open the lobby they're filled with too many regs for my liking and I'm happy with the reduced variance of the £5s.

The live MTT the other day was good practice. Although I didn't really get anything going. Overall I feel that my live reads are sharp, and that I'm making less mistakes in comparison to online MTTs - As I have the time to think about every decision and plan ahead in the hand. I'm really excited about the GUKPT next month and I just want to crush it. At this moment, the money is secondary to me. I just want to show everyone, what I know, I'm capable of.

    Best of luck

I can't complain at all how thing's have been progressing the past few days. I'm still running pretty good in the DYMs. Averaging around 15% ROI at the moment, so definitely running above my expected winrate.

According to sharkscope I played 36 DYMs today +$61.84
With the intention of gaining some post flop experience and diversifying my game, I've been taking a stab at multi-tabling 20nl 6max cash. Good results so far. If I could make the transition from DYMs to cash I probably would. But I struggle with putting in the volume cash wise. When I load a few DYMs, I'm stuck with them for the next 30-40 minutes, but obviously with cash you can leave when you want.

Estimating some players ranges in cash can be like taking a shot in the dark. Focusing on the weaker players:

So many overplay their hands - betting 2nd pair for value on a wet board, limp calling A5 and calling down on a dry A board.

But then you get the opposite end of the spectrum. Some check the nuts the whole way through. My favourite of all, are the players that limp call 74 and call down on an AK4xx board. But then you have the players that limp massive pairs or min raise KK and then can't get away from it on an JJxxx board, when you can't help but scream strength. My cash game definitely needs work though. From bet sizing to 3 bet ranges etc.

Here's a couple hands from earlier

    Biggest pot of the day:

    Opponent calling ridiculously light:

Funny (not) hand from an £11 DYM. I was literally in disbelief when I saw what he had:

    Hey pat

Just been reading your diary and it's a very good read.

This month ive started to play £5 dym to build my bankroll im not doing to bad at them, think my roi is 16% but with a very very small sample size of 28 games lol. Im only playing 2 tables at a time tho i might increase that when i get more settled with playing them and getting to know who the regs are.
We were on a couple of tables together earlier, and you took me out in one when my A6s lost to your pocket 6s (i should of folded pre flop).

Anyway good luck at GUKPT Plymouth, i live in plymouth and have only played one tourney in the casino and came 3rd so hopefully you can beat that and take it down.

    Keep up the good work.

    Hi Thomas,

Always nice to have new faces in the thread. Unlucky with the A6 hand though. Nice comeback in the game we just played haa (well both of our comebacks lol). Don't worry too much about the regs at the 5.50 level, you only really get competent ones at the £11 dyms in my opinion. Just continue improving your game and you'll be fine.

Thanks about the GUKPT by the way, I'm so pumped for it. I've never been to the Grosvenor in Plymouth though, what's it like?

    best of luck

What a comeback i was down to 77 chips and blinds were 100/200 and i doubled up 3 or 4 times and chashed! Then it was your turn lol.

The grosvenor is a nice casino they just recently done it out (about 2 years ago). Im just use to it now tho been there to many times loosing money at blackjack, roulette ect. The card room is a bit small in my opinion, think there was about 120 ish playing when i played there and it was a bit tight. How many playing the GUKPT?

As i said on the table my roi is 16% but im still not sure if thats right because if i work it out like this: profit/buy-ins x 100 it comes out at 1600% and im not that good lol. Any thoughts?

    Good luck at the tables

Haha nice, it was a crazy game for us both to cash! Thanks for the info, sounds like a nice enough place. I heard the GUKPT normally gets about 70-90 runners, so hopefully its not too crowded. It'd still be a decent enough prize pool with 60 players.

Not sure where your going wrong ROI calculation wise. Say you make £100 profit from 100 £5.50 dyms. It'd be:

    100/550 = 0.1818
    ans*100= 18.18%

I just use sharkscope for mine, if you click on leaderboards and register, you can filter your results by game, stake etc.

Ok thanks ive got it sorted now on the roi front lol Its 3% over 37 games, but i wont be getting to excited until ive played 1000+ but its a good start.

There should be plenty of room if there are only 70 odd runners at GUKPT. If you need any more info on the casino let me know.

    Cheers

As solid as today's results were, they could have been even better. Nevertheless I need to remind myself of days like today the next time I'm on a 250 game break-even stretch. I'm really happy with how I've been playing/running so far this month. Saying that, I always start the month on a heater, and things cool off around the middle of the month. I just need to stay focused, not tilt, and play to the best of my ability.

According to sharkscope I played 56 games with +£57.50  (I was finally clever enough to filter games in £ not $ lol)

Had a bit of a heated discussion with a Reg regarding winrates. He basically refused to accept that a 15% Roi in £11 DYMs wasn't sustainable. He thought that because of my leaks I couldn't achieve his winrate - and his is 15%+ through pure skill. We basically agreed to disagree. Thoughts on this would be nice from various players. Seeing as he believes a 25% ROI pre rake is manageable at £11 dyms. Which in my opinion, is just ridiculous. As I think a 9% ROI is pretty maxed at the 5s and probably a 6-8% in the £11s depending on how much you table select.

Played a couple HU sngs today, and won both. Which is always nice. Won one of them on the very first played hand (he was sat out for the first 2). Flopped a straight and he shoved with middle pair lol. Always nice.

    -

On a sidenote I've actually begun reading 'the mental game of poker' and it's a very interesting read. So far I've learnt a ton of useful concepts and I'm only a few pages in. The mental game is such an important and undervalued aspect of any poker players repertoire (yes I had to google the spelling of that word lol). So it's great to be working on my 'mental game'.

    All the best

It's often been the downswings I've heavily struggled with. At the end of the day, 'Anyone can be the man when things are going well, it's how we react and handle failure that seperates the winners from the losers.'

As my 15th buy-in disappeared, there I was, just as I'd predicated a couple days prior, in the inevitable downswing. The type when you could know what cards your opponents held, and still lose. It's not the money side of losing I've struggled with, I've grown out of the phase of chasing my losses. It's the turmoil that comes with AK being beaten by A2 for the 5th time in a row - the sense of self-doubt that accompanies such a run of cards. But for once, I called it a day, turned my computer off, and decided to come back the next day, and the next day after that, until I turned things around. This is what I'm most proud about. Not that I've undone most of the damage, but that I walked away when my cards were trumped.

Today was volume, volume, volume. I played a 2 hour session, and a 3 hour session. Which is something I've never done before, unless I've been on monkey-tilt. 'I always start the month on a heater, and things cool off around the middle of the month. I just need to stay focused, not tilt, and play to the best of my ability.'

    Results since Wednesday:

    Hi Pat
Nice to see things going well for you especially when your downswing doesn't take over your upswing. Wearing that seiko watch...nice...all you need now is a bracelet with WSOP on it!!!
Cheers and keep that balance.....God knows how you manage that many tables for that many hours though. I like watching a bit of tv too much i think.

Thanks for the input, it means a lot. Downswings are definitely an area where a lot of people stuggle with. It's all too easy to get in the wrong mindset and donk off a months work in a few high stakes hands of cash. So it feels good to stay level headed!

I was the same with the number of tables and amount of time I used to play. I've gradually built it up from two tables for 20 minutes to 12 for 2 hours. 3 hours was unusual, and I'd like to get some long sessions in on the weekend whilst the games/traffic is good.
