You can be profitable, you will just have to adjust your game from what is the norm. Like your example, avoid big pots with 2 or more cards to come, despite it be an obviously good move in the real world... you will get stung.... try and control the pot a bit more, you probably not getting away from that above example regardless, but in most cases you can get away from it when its such an obvious river when you can see the way the hand is heading... as most hands will change lead late. Your friend is right to adapt and anticipate what is likely to happen against certain players and avoid situations that you wouldnt be considering in a real deck situation... this is the key to success in online poker.

All we are saying is and im happy to give you an example of this;
If for example, you hold As Ac 2d 5c and you raise and are called... the flop is Ah 9h Qc.... my immediate theory is my opponent has 2 hearts.... this is through vast experience... he will have 2 hearts.... you dont know that with a real deck obv..
So probably with a plastic deck, i am happy to ram and jam right from the flop, if the opp so wishes... here i almost definitely know if i bet out max on the flop and he calls...the pot is building and he WILL hit his flush despite it having not to be a queen or whatever the turn card is if its not a heart (as i then make a FH)....
So this is a good example of many, where you play a hand differently, because you know why the flop is the way it is.
You can still play the correct play and still lose, it's mostly a game of chance with players playing the odds and players not so much and hoping for the best, them long odds do and often come in especially when you're playing thousands of hands, you just gotta ride with it I'm afraid
