I thought he was younger than 31 years old he can only be a stop gap to get us through the remainder of the season due to our injuries and he's 'ready made' for the premier league.

Not sure he is a starter. But (IMO) he is better than Xhaka, and way better than Elneny. And (though I'm sure his wages are massive) the fee doesn't sound high

FEYENOORD keeper Justin Bijlow produced a clever piece of "s***housery" to potentially deny a goal in their game against FC Twente.

The Dutch leaders were winning 1-0 late in the first half when the stopper raced out of his goal to make a tackle.

He successfully beat forward Virgil Misidjan to the ball at the expense of a throw.

But with Bijlow miles away from his goal and running off the pitch, Misidjan sensed an opportunity to catch him out and score.

However, Bijlow's quick-thinking immediately put a stop to that.

When the Feyenoord keeper noticed he was in trouble, he grabbed another ball and threw it onto the pitch.

Proper quick thinking by the keeper I loved the bit where the throw in player threw the ball at him :D

Strange headlines today. Like this one:-

    https://www.bbc.co.uk/sport/football/64469920

I'm a typical Spurs fan. Dislike Arsenal intensely. But it doesn't mean I lose all sense of proportion in relation to Deadline Day transfers.

Arsenal may not have splashed the cash. But Jorginho is definitely an upgrade on Lokonga. And who else has got a substantial upgrade?

Chelsea have (as usual) spent ridiculous amounts of money. But they are so far behind they need snookers. Same for Liverpool-except they didn't sign anyone.

The main challengers this season? Let's look at the 4 closest challengers.

Spurs. Just an upgrade at Right Back. It might increase chances of finishing 4th. But no more than that.

Newcastle. Not a lot. Unless you count offloading Shelvey.

Man Utd. 1 big new signing-Sabitzer. But he is only there to replace Eriksen, who is unlikely to play again until the very end of the season.

Man City. Only bit of major business was to sell Cancelo. Strange.

Arsenal are in the lead. And, instead of focussing on what Arsenal have or have not done, should be concentrating on their rivals lack of transfer business.

Tottenham boss Antonio Conte set to step away from football amid health issue.

Antonio Conte will take a break from football after he undergoes surgery to remove his gallbladder.

Tottenham confirmed the news in a statement on Wednesday morning:

“Antonio Conte recently became unwell with severe abdominal pain. Following a diagnosis of cholecystitis, he will be undergoing surgery to remove his gallbladder today and will return following a period of recuperation. Everyone at the Club wishes him well”

According to the NHS, it can take up to eight weeks to return to full activities after gallbladder surgery.

Cristian Stellini is the club’s assistant manager, and oversaw media duties ahead of Tottenham’s recent FA Cup win over Preston. Whilst not confirmed by the club, he is expected to step up in Conte’s absence.

Tottenham are next in action on Sunday the 5th of February. The Lilywhites face off with Manchester City in a Premier League clash.

Spurs head into the game sat 5th in the Premier League and on a mixed run of form, whilst Manchester City are looking to close the gap on league leaders, Arsenal.

I thought that was a shrewd piece of business by Arsenal, at that price , in the current ludicrous market, a snip.

It is the amount of reserves/loanees that are staggering. Their 2nd team/subs could be:-

    Mendy; Azpolicueta, Fofana, Coulibaly, Chilwell;
Pulisic, Kante, Mount; Sterling, Broja, Ziyech

Subs: Bettinelli, Chalobah, Loftus-Cheek, Zakaria, Gallagher, Chukwuemeka, Santo, Aubameyang

Loanees: Ampadu, Colwill, Sarr, Bakayoko, Hudson-Odoi, Lukaku

What a colossal waste of money.

La Liga slam ‘cheating’ Premier League after Chelsea lead £1bn spending.

La Liga have slammed the Premier League, claiming that the division is ‘cheating’ and undergoing ‘financial doping’ after the close of the January transfer window.

The 20 Premier League clubs spent over 800m euros on 92 new arrivals, with only Everton not making a signing, though they did rake in £45m for young talent Anthony Gordon. It was more than all other major leagues around Europe combined, with Ligue 1 the next highest at €127m, while the other three leagues all spent below €100m.

Chelsea’s spending in particular came under scrutiny, with the Blues splashing out over 600m euros since Todd Boehly took over in May 2022, culminating in a deadline day record transfer for Benfica’s Enzo Fernandez. January’s spending set a new record, shelling out the most in any single season, a record held previously by Barcelona who spent a ‘measly’ 380m euros by comparison.

And La Liga Corporate General Javier Gomez, who has taken a hardline stance on finances around Barcelona in the previous 12 months, was quick to demand increased regulations from UEFA, who are already moving to exploit the amortisation loophole that the Blues exploited in recent months.

“We are aware there is a lot of talk about how LaLiga’s economic control means Spanish clubs sign less than Premier League clubs,” Gomez said. “Let’s explain what’s behind that. What’s the truth? The reality is that at LaLiga we want clubs to spend what they can afford and generate themselves, that is to say, their own revenues.

“It is true that shareholders are also allowed to support the club and put money in to spend more than the club itself can generate, but within certain limits.”

The opposite is true in the Premier League, he continued “The data is as follows: With data compared up to June 30, 2021, and across the five previous seasons, the PL and Championship -- top two tiers of English football -- lost €3bn. In that same time, the Spanish league lost -- we all suffered in the pandemic -- €250m. But what happened? During that same period, shareholders across the PL and Champ put in €3.5bn. Across that same period, shareholders in Spain put in €450m.

“What’s the issue? Essentially, they are ‘doping’ the club. They are injecting money not generated by the club for it to spend, which puts the viability of the club at risk if the shareholder leaves. In our opinion, that is cheating, because it drags down the rest of the leagues.

“That is our fight, demanding that UEFA implements a new economic regulation that prevents the shareholder of a club from putting in more than a certain amount and that it enforces this rule and sanctions non-compliant clubs. It doesn’t matter which league or country it is, they should sanction clubs that don’t comply with this regulation.”
