In Response to Re: Ask Tikay? : Thanks Barry. Yes, you need to be a Member - as you do at ANY "properly" Licensed venue. By the bye, the nice peeps at DTD will have you shot if you refer to their place as a "Casino". It's a "Cardroom", not a Casino! Posted by Tikay10
Never been but i did sign the petition they made to have the place opened.
Tk i know you've been to a lot of card rooms and im curious how there seem to be so many in the UK yet only 1 with the proper licence required to do it?
If it's Illegal to run a card room yet all these places are openly advertised then how do they get away with it?
In Response to Re: Ask Tikay? : You had a bit of a reply to this, but I don't think it really told the whole story. It's true that most of the time if a player is all in then other players in the hand won't really fight for the pot because they'd rather hope one of them hits something to knock the all in player out. Understanding why people usually do this might help you decide when to go by this, and when to do as you did and just maximise your chances of winning the pot - because both options can be correct play depending on the circumstance. Generally throughout the tournament what you're trying to do is to act in a way that maximises your chances of winning each hand - so you accumulate chips to put you in a stronger position. But once you get particularly deep, another factor that can be taken into account isn't just how to win the most tournament chips - but how to win the most dollars/pounds/cold hard cash from the prize pool. So if knocking out a player means that you are guaranteed to win more money (because he was knocked out on the bubble, or if everyone is already in the money and this moves you up one place) then it is often the case that it is to everyone's advantage (apart from the all in player) to not fight for the pot. It isn't entirely clear cut though, if you're a long way from the bubble then it doesn't really help you win more cash, if the tournament pays the top few places a disportionate amount then you're likely to win the most money by trying to win the most chips (and win the tournament) and there are a number of other situations where the argument for trying to win the pot or trying to knock out the player will be quite finely balanced. Essentially there was nothing technically wrong with how you played that hand in particular, and there would have been nothing technically wrong with checking down the hand to see if either one of you hit - it's all down to judgement as to what is to your best advantage. Hi BelovedLtd,
Thank you for the advice. That answers my question perfectly, and also the expansion to my question wondering about the significance of allowing players to be knocked out by others. I think I need a lot more experience at the tables before I can start playing hands like that with 100% certainty, because from experience (so far!) it seems that calculating risk vs reward is not just as simple as 'calculating risk vs reward'.I hope that makes sense!?

Indeed, a great post by BelovedLtd. You are right about "risk vs reward". You will see many posts mentioning the phrase "meta-game". This, essentially, is a term used to describe situations which transcend the decisions made on an individual hand. There are many facets to this and it is a large part of what makes poker such a fascinating (and complex) game. It is clear from your posts that you have an understanding of the game that exceeds that of many people who have been playing it for considerably longer than yourself. I'm sure that you'll get lots of enjoyment from the game.
In Response to Re: Ask Tikay? : Hi Steve, If you live in Leicester, there is a Gala Casino there, though I don't recommend it, it's not exactly a recognized poker venue, & it's run dreadfully. Either..... Drive 60 miles south, to G-Luton, where they have Tourneys every day of the week, at prices to suit most pockets. It's not terirbly well-run, but the staff & players are a great bunch. Or..... Drive 20 minute north to DTD in Nottingham, (go up the A46, it's much quicker than via the M1), who are open Tuesday to Sunday every week, with up to 3 Tourneys per night, starting at £25. Once you have played Live at DTD, you will never want to play at any other venue, anywhere in Europe, ever - DTD is THE ultimate Live Poker experience in Europe. Bar none. You are lucky to live so near to them. Go on - treat yourself! As to the problem you have in later stages of Tourneys, well, by definitiion, we all find it harder at the sharp and, as ranges widen considerably. Just increase the aggro factor, steal more, NEVER limp, & most important of all, run good. The wins will come in their own time. Posted by Tikay10
Thanks for the info & advise Tikay.Hope it all works. You are a STAR...
Playing in a tourney tonight where I was sat as table chip leader with about 12,000chips. A player was transferred from another table into a seat immediately to my right holding around 15,000 chips. We were both sat in middle position, blinds 75/150 and the next hand dealt me AQ o/s which I raised X4. The other guy immediately went all in, I folded. A 3rd player on the button was short stacked and called. the cards on their backs showed him holding KQ with the flop coming down A-7-Q which would have meant me winning the hand and doubling up which niggled me a bit.
The question is, based on the fact that I had no information on this bloke did I make the right play in laying down my hand or should I have called his play?

Morning Mike.
Yes - I Pass all day there if we have no info on Villain. With info, it might be a different answer, but at that juncture, I pass, I can "find a better situation" than calling "blind", in effect, for my Tourney. A-Q is a pushing rather than calling hand at that stage, I'd say. When playing A-Q I play it strongly if I am the one to open the betting, but if someone else opens aggressively first, (unless a shortie), I'm binning it.
Villain's bet was pretty naff, to be honest he's shoved an unopened Pot for 100 x BB, which is about as bad a play as there can be. To call all-in when you have 80 x BB would have been badderer though.
Did you manage to suppress your mirth when he open-shoved for 100 x BB? It is truly, & by any yardstick, a dumb play of epic proportions, it is simply horrendous. A call from you would have been horrendouser mind.....
By the bye, you said he was to your "right". I assume you mean to your left, as you had opened with a proper raise before he shoved, yes?

In Response to Re: Ask Tikay? : Hi Dude - or should that be "Yo Dude"? Yes - Sky-Rich is on holiday all this week, he's been off since last Friday, I think. I believe Steve-M is hanldling Rich's responsibilities in Rich's absence. Posted by Tikay10
I just searched for him but he isn't on Profile, search for friends, could you type the name again please. Posted by Dudeskin8
His name is Sky_SteveM. However, even if you type his full name into the e-mail contact list it won't appear due to the rather odd search algorithm that SkyPoker uses.
Your best bet is to look at his post on this thread and click on "Contact Sky_SteveM".
