Just a quick update. Not played since Thursday, mainly as knackered and don't think I can concentrate for the full length of a deep run. On Thursday I played the Main and the Mini and finished 21st in both. As I am working hard at the moment and not really got the time to play MTT's I am going to dip into the Cash arena. Plan to play 3 tables of 20nl and see how I fare.
Any comments on the above would be greatly appreciated. Need to know if I am playing badly or getting unlucky. Apart from these hands I thought I played OK, maybe a little to aggressively and not believing my opponents enough. Had my first weekly bet of the footie season and its as follows - £5 accum - Derby at Sunderland 21/10 - Derby made some decent signings, very good new manager and Sunderland in freefall. Sheff Utd home to Brentford 11/10 - First game back in big time, huge home crowd with a great atmosphere should see them carry on from last season against a team who don't travel the best. Charlton home to Bristol Rovers 13/10 - Charlton could be a surprise package this season and would be one of my fancies for Div One, had a really good pre-season to. Fulham home to Norwich 1/1 - Both should do well this season but Fulham at home were formidable last season and think they will be too strong for Norwich. Sheff Wed at Preston 6/4 - Huge following for Wed with about 5,600 tickets sold. Very consistent team and at a Preston who have lost their manager and a team I think may struggle this season. Returns £370 for a cracking start to the season. Heard back from a couple of jobs I applied for including the dreaded video interview. As expected it was not good news so it looks like I will be staying put for the time being. Tonight I will continue on the Cash game front as I did enjoy my time at the cash tables.
Straight flush is obv ul nh gg etc....could argue pre is a bit speculative but meh.
Whilst it's an unfortunate river with 77, not sure you should still be in the hand by then. Know it feels weak to pass when someone donks into you, and calling flop is mostly fine in position, but by turn, and there are no draws, think you have to just accept they probs have at least Tx and give up. There are no good rivers for you apart from the 7, which ironically wasn't good for you this time.
AK....generally a hand you'd 3bet but its an EP 4x so can see why you've just flatted in position. This will often bring in others/the blinds so you do have to tread a bit carefully even on decent looking flops. Think flop and turn is fine. Seems to go a bit mad on the river Think its close between betting and checking; not too sure what calls us that we beat apart from maybe KxQc thinking you're bluffing with the Ac blocker, maybe QcQx or similar might sigh pay you off. If you do bet then I'd maybe go a little smaller to try get these crying calls, and 100% fold to the raise, this is just hardly ever a bluff at these levels. Seems nitty but also think checking back would be fine given how the hand has played out.
End of my cash run. Played terribly and basically got what I deserved. A reminder of the fact I am S*** at cash and it will be back to MTT's tomorrow and stay away from the cash tables. It's funny (costly) how I play MTT's relatively calmly and patiently but once I sit at a cash table I seem **** bent on playing fast and loose. I think I am one of those people who are suited to MTT's and should just avoid cash. Again its funny (costly) that I have to keep reminding myself of this by losing a few quid every couple of months. Do you know I think it is the reload of cash that is my downfall. When I'm playing a MTT I really look after my chips and protect them as if my life depends on them. In Cash, where each chip is actually money, I have a disregard for them and go chasing draws and play hands I wouldn't think of playing in a MTT. Bizzare really when you think about it. Did play the Main and Mini tonight and got absolutely nowhere. Tomorrow is another day and I will be back on the tournie's playing my A1 game again. Positive thinking and all that.

Going to post a couple of key hands from my deep run in The Main last night. Comments would be appreciated. The 1st hand I am pretty sure is the right play but just want assurances that my thinking is correct as this is a situation I often find myself in and if I am wrong is a big rick in my game. Not interested in the 5 on the board but whether my pre-flop is correct.
So as I said earlier I managed a 7th in last nights main but really felt I was taking this down with about 10 to go. Thought I played really well and at end of day went out to a cooler. One thing I did establish last night is that DEWSBURY is the new hotbed of UK poker. As a previous resident of Dewsbury I was amazed to come across 3 other players last night who were all playing from their homes in Dewsbury. Maybe someone should be opening a poker room in the town.

Long term lurking reader here. I enjoy the diary, both the poker and the real life stuff as I live in Highburton not too far from you and recognise a lot of the local names and places you mention.
Think the 55 is an easy fold pre, like you say it's pointless to dwell on the fact you'd have spiked the set.
As for the QQ, it's a pretty meh spot. His 4bet sizing suggests such strength, is he ever doing this with JJ or tens? We have enough chips to fold and ladder but if he does have AK and we hold we have a huge chance of shipping the whole thing. I'm interested to see what players with a better understanding of ICM suggest. Think I get it in versus some villains and sigh fold versus others.
Well done on the deep run though.
Ps. Thought your cash game was pretty solid when I played a bit of NL20 earlier in the week, don't think you have to write that part of your game off just yet.
Thanks to SJspanky1 commenting above that I am the greatest cash player since Isldur burst on to the scene I returned to the cash tables tonight and lost! Was half expecting the afore-mentioned Mr Spanky to appear on the table and relieve me of my cash. Was it all a subtle ploy to get the fish on the table. Funny night on the MTT tables participating in 8 MTT's with 7 recording no return and then the biggest the £55 Quickdraw producing a win for a return of £722. With 5 left I had over half the chips and would of been gutted not to take down a 1st or 2nd. Villa did what they did all last season, looked decent for a while, took the lead, sat back and paid the consequences. Admittedly Andre Green should have restored our lead when he headed a sitter wide, we would of probably conceded another equaliser anyway. Really still not sure how it will pan out this season but fear if we are not in a decent position after 5 games the Bruce critics will be out in force. AFC Emley also played their 1st competitive game of the season, a preliminary FA Cup qualifier to BurscoughFC1946 and lost 3-0. Have to admit that when the teamsheet was released there were only 4 names from last season and to be fair none of them were key players last year. Think it could be a long season and we will be nearer bottom of table than the top we have become accustomed to over the last couple of years. On the plus the crowd was a decent 306.

Hand 1 - Fine as played, though personally would raise to 2.1/2.2x pre. Incidentally, if the other guy hadn't got involved I would lean towards 4betting SBegs here - we can't flat oop and the guy flippin' loves a 3bet :P
Hand 2 - Not a fun spot but ICM would have you go with QQ. It's not like we're 2nd place against 1st. I think here we want to 3bet polar - for value or as a bluff. QQ is clearly in our value range so if we start folding our value range to 4bets I think we're going to be overfolding and become an easy target to be pushed around. So would play it as you did, just a cooler.
P.s. Hull fan here - we will win the Championship this year
13 days have passed since my last post and I have just returned from a week in Tuscany that will live long in the memory. I was there for a wedding that started in Manchester Airport early last Saturday morning with a gathering of old friends and soon to be friends in the bar. All in all there were 35 of us who spent the week together in 6 villas that were situated in their own grounds with 2 pools with what can be only described as the best surroundings and views I have ever had the pleasure to enjoy. The wedding was a beautiful occasion on the Wednesday set in the grounds, in the lower mountains, between the vineyards above Lucca, in the Tuscany region of Italy. It really felt like I was on a film set and the whole experience is probably best captured by the fact the official photographer has also photographed Charles and Camilla. During our stay a few of us made our way on the local rail network for a couple of day trips, getting to experience a 'double-decker' train for the first time. We ventured into Florence and despite the heat and the crowds I was gobsmacked by the beauty of the place with the architecture around every corner taking my breath away and the beautiful river running through it with the Ponte Vecchio Bridge over it a highlight. On another trip we visited the Leaning Tower of Pisa in the morning and the walled city of Lucca in the afternoon. Managed to get the traditional tourist picture at the Tower and was pleasantly surprised how nice Pisa was as I had heard from many people it was a bit of a dump. Whilst away I got to hear the, not so surprising, news that Villa had started the season poorly and only a win yesterday has probably saved Bruce from the chop. Friday is now a massive game away at Bristol City with a win perhaps providing the much needed confidence for us to really take The Championship by storm. Still not 100% convinced by Bruce but I am in the camp that we need to stick with him for now as one thing we do need is stability and I also don't see a better alternative at this time. I do think that Olof Mellberg, huge Villa legend and currently managing in Scandinavia where he is top of the 2nd Division, will be manager in the future but now is probably not the time. Was contemplating going on Friday as I will be passing Bristol on the day but really don't think its fair to leave the Mrs and Daughter sat in the car for 3 hours whilst I go, particularly as my daughter has plans in the evening. On the Poker front I obviously haven't played this week and will only be playing tonight before setting off to Exmouth in Devon tomorrow for a short break at my Dads until returning on Friday. I am considering playing Day 1 of the Grosvenor Summer Sizzler at Huddersfield on Friday night depending on getting back with no problems on Friday and on how tired I feel. Its a 2 dayer with Day 2 at Leeds Grosvenor on Bank Holiday Monday. It has a £20k guarantee with a £110 Buy-In, which is a bit above my level but would be a nice way to wrap up my holiday. Had a small wager today which has got off to a flyer - £2.67 Accum - Huddersfield 6/4, Chelsea or Draw 4/6, Villa v Wigan 3/4, Reading v Millwall 1/1, Watford v Bristol City 4/5, Southampton v Wolves 3/5. Also had 4 Request a bets on Spurs v Chelsea - Bakayoko, Christensen, Alli & Luiz all Carded @ 66/1, Bakayoko, Christensen, Alli & Dier all Carded @ 80/1, Kane to Score, Alli, Dembele & Dier all Carded @80/1, Morata to Score, BTTS, 5+ corners each team, Bakayako, Luiz & Dier to be Carded @200/1.

Another week gone and I do wonder where time goes. It seems only yesterday that Summer was beginning and now we are only 120 days away from the big man in the red coat and the white beard coming down your chimney, as long as you've been good. Anyone in retail will know this is old news but for the rest of you it means there are only 17 shopping Saturdays to get those presents bought and wrapped. Take a couple of weekends out for Halloween and Bonfire Night and time is definitely running out. Spent a few days last week with my Dad at his home on the East Devon Coast where life is certainly slower and more relaxed. Enjoyed a few Ice Creams and a couple of pints or ten in two of my favourite pubs, The Beach and The Grove in Exmouth. Also spent a day out at Morwellham Quay, an old copper mine where you get to travel through the mine and see how life was in the village and quay in the days when the mine was prospering. Really interesting excursion made all the better by the guys who provide talks on different subjects throughout the day. Returned to Skelmanthorpe on Friday with the intention of playing at the local casino but succumbed to watching The Villa in my local. Thought we played OK and gained a point we probably wouldn't have got last season. See us moving in the right direction but not sure if it is fast enough. September will be key and we need to be Top 6, or thereabouts, come the end of September or we will be in danger of becoming the new Sheff Weds. I do think Snodgrass could be a key signing for us and is possibly a missing link. Spent yesterday applying for new jobs at Lidl, Boots, Wickes, Debenhams and Iceland. Not sure if I will be successful in any of these or whether they will be able to offer the package I require but I definitely have itchy feet at the moment and need a new challenge. As anyone in retail management will tell you, three years in the same role in the same store is a long time. Tonight I will be playing a variey of MTT's but already have my work cut out having failed to qualify for the Sunday Major via a couple of £24 sats.

Played awful last night and it cost me a few quid, £120 to be exact. Having reviewed my Hand History this morning it is evident that I had 3 big faults in my game last night. Firstly I was getting into situations I didn't need to be in by playing sub optimal hands in poor position. Tonight I will have to tighten my starting range up dependant on position. Secondly I was over valuing small to medium pocket pairs and was not afraid to get it in when it was not the best play. Tonight I will be more careful with pocket pairs. Thirdly I was not thinking about the opponents possible range and not spotting / believing draws when they hit. Tonight I will be more observant of the opponents possible range. That sorted I expect to win at least 2 tournies tonight and recover my losses and some more. On a serious note I will be playing some of the major tournies tonight and will be looking to play a lot better. Already heard back from one of my applications and it's a NO from Lidl. This may turn out to be a blessing as they were one of the companies I did wonder if they would be able to meet my requirements. So 1 down 4 to go and no Video Interviews in site, thank God. Finished Season 7 of Game of Thrones this morning and as always was a very compelling watch. Problem now is what to watch next. As I don't watch day to day TV, apart from sport, it is matter of picking a new box set to get into. I have watched many of the big ones, Breaking Bad, Homeland, Peaky Blinders, Westworld etc and any suggestions would be appreciated. At the moment I am leaning towards The Wire and will also watch Tin Star when it starts. This afternoon I am taking the 'Good Lady' out for a spot of late lunch / early dinner and will then be on the tables.

Next 3 hands were my big losers over the last couple of days at cash.
Any comments on the above would be greatly appreciated. Need to know if I am playing badly or getting unlucky.
Apart from these hands I thought I played OK, maybe a little to aggressively and not believing my opponents enough.
Had my first weekly bet of the footie season and its as follows -
£5 accum - Derby at Sunderland 21/10 - Derby made some decent signings, very good new manager and Sunderland in freefall. Sheff Utd home to Brentford 11/10 - First game back in big time, huge home crowd with a great atmosphere should see them carry on from last season against a team who don't travel the best.
