It seems to be the month of new and resurrected diaries so about time I posted on here.

Some people may have seen me before, I have done some challenges and diary threads. I could have bumped the last one but frankly searching back through pages to find it didnt really appeal and the "in for a penny" challenge would be hard to pick up accurately as I have made some deposits and withrawals.

I stopped posting and cut down on the play in June due to a tragic real life event, which I shall not discuss here.

About a year ago I started a thread about the new rewards scheme, and proved to myself and a few doubters that it was actually a big improvement. (Disclaimer: I accept there are some who are worse off if they kept to their volume)

Recently some under the hood modifications have enabled the tokens received to be saved up.

This is the inspiration for my new thread.

I am going to save my tokens up and see if I can win something big with them, either via a main/ukops entry or via a promotional satellite for a Punta Cana ticket (if it happens - Tikay is avoiding my hints elsewhere on the subject - I expect we will find out in due course).

Long term aim has always been to take Mrs P on a treat as a result of poker winnings so Punta Cana fits the bill nicely.

I consider myself a competent recreational player - capable of playing profitably at lower stakes - and also capable of tilting it off occasionally.

I have £6.90 worth of tokens at the moment which start expiring on 23/10/16 so I aim to keep qualifying for them up until that point and we will see what is available to use them on.

I'll also try and build the roll up while playing the poker needed to get 100+pts per week.

Been dabbling in cash recently with some success but roll is a bit low following a big withdrawal after a recent win on the Open so it will probably be SNGs for now with an occasional punt at spinups.

I got into poker like many of my generation after watching Late Night Poker  on Channel 4 having played a bit of stud and draw poker for pennies in my youth, this NL holdem and the characters of the show had me intrigued.

Unfortunaltey (or fortunately for my lungs reading Jacs diary) I didnt know anyone who could introduce me to the live scene in those days so I joined the poker internet revolution and have played on and off for 17 years or so now.

Limit cash was where I first made money at it, then NL SNGs and the odd NL MTT.

Lately really enjoy PLO8, albeit results nosedived since I started recording them for the 1000 game challenge.

One thing about playing PLO8 is that when you play NL again the decisions seem so much easier and you have so much more time. I wonder if it is that or just plain variance that resulted in a winning run at £3DYMs while on the in 4 a penny challenge?

I have been married to Mrs P for 24 years (and a day) so I have just under a year to win enough for a great anniversary treat.

We have 2 grown up sons 22 and 18, both back with us at least for the summer, and a dog (black Cocker Spaniel called Molly).

edit:So I did it, lumped my tokens on a £33 main entry and picked up a nice score of £560. I will keep the thread going until the holiday happens. Time to start saving those tokens again!

GL at the tables.

Edit. Life took a further tragic turn later on this diary. I lost my son Sam when he was 25. I took a break from poker but I back now and hoping to win some money to go to good causes in his memory. We lost our dog Molly too and now have a lively young golden cocker spaniel Lily.

    Excellent start, thank you.

Someone commented to me a few nights ago that several new Diaries seem to have suddenly appeared, & I'm very pleased to see that. Not everyone enjoys the various diaries, but that's fine, as they don't have to read them.

I'm avoiding your Punta Cana hints? Correct. ;) It's not my place to reveal stuff until or unless I get the nod.

But if you look around the forum, there are generally a few
    clues   .......

Brilliant read Phantom. Seems like Late night poker started a lot of people off on the poker scene. LNP was my saviour when my son was a baby, something intresting to watch at silly oclock in the morning because he wouldn't settle. Well seemed silly o'clock at that time. I am sure you will reach your goal. Good luck with it.

    Thanks Tikay and Angel.

Of course after LNP came PNL and a dedicated poker channel, with live poker action.

It was then that I switched to SNGs, mainly to be a TV Tart and "play the presenter" which I did twice with a 100% record vs Mark Banin and Michelle "Night Nurse" Orpe.

Must admit to having a bit of a crush on Ms Orpe, and then Kara Scott.

I'll have to be careful here as I know Tikay worked with these people but I had mixed feelings for some of the presenters.

I absolutely loved the enthusiasm of James Browning, the wit of Nick Wealthall and I llearned alot from the likes of Dr Tom and Tikay who could explain things without being pretentious - finding the right level for the enthusiatic beginner/intermediate player like me.

As well as the 2 ladies above, the lovely Lynsey Horn joined the show later on.

There was also a bloke called Casper and I never really took to Matt Broughton either. Cant put my finger on why, they both irritated me.

Still yet to play live (other than home games) but very much on my bucket list. Vegas would have to be a solo venture as not Mrs P's bag, Punta Cana would be a nice place to start.

Yep PNL and the poker channel too. Remember them well, even through bleary eyes. Son is 7 now nearly 8 and has shown an intrest in playing poker. Must be something instilled in his tiny brain from being a baby, a bit like my daughter who's 12 being very musical and has had a place in the music academy for gifted and talented musicians. She plays flute, drums, guitar, recorder, ukelele etc am sure that was because I listened to music and sang when I was pregnant with her. If he wants to learn poker I won't stop him maybe a future WSOP bracelet winner ( sigh in my dreams).

    Academy for gifted musicians? WP.

I expect ithere is more to it than being sung to in the womb, encouraging and supportive parenting plus a dedication to practice probably have a lot to do with it.

Lol, stop with all that, stop right now, or I'll be all over the thread just as I'm trying hard not to on Grumpy Jac's thread.

I saw Mark "Prince Charles" Banin in Vegas earlier this month, his poker career has had something of a renaissance lately with a few tidy scores.

Michelle Orpe used to go through boyfriends at the rate of one a fortnight, but she eventually settled down & became a Mum. She does bits & bobs for DTD now. Heart of gold, no edge to her at all.

I'm still very close to Kara Scott, & we had some private time in Vegas this year, as we do every year. She is married to an Italian chap now, & lives in Italy, & her main gig these days is with ESPN for the WSOP. Smashing kid. She came across to Sky Poker after PNL, as did Michelle. In fact, my very first task when I went to work for Sky Poker in October 2006 was to recruit Presenters & Commentators, & Kara was top of my list. Soon, of course, she moved on up to Full Tilt, 'Stars, PP, ESPN  & all sorts. I'm very proud of her. She used to do Martial Arts, surprisingly. Tough girl.

I could write a whole book about James Browning, a quite remarkable man, with some hidden depths & talents. He started off working in a circus of all things. Very accomplished backgammon player. At one point in time he was banned from every casino in the UK, due to his success at Blackjack - he was a self-confessed card-counter, & the casinos don't like that. He teamed up with Lynne Beaumonte 5 or 6 years back - she was a better player than him imo - but they split up recently. They used to run a private cash game in Swindon or somewhere equally dreadful. James has a strange habit of invading one's personal space - he stands REALLY close when he talks to anyone, right in their face. It makes me extremely uncomfortable, so I sort of back away, & he sort of follows me......I'm not even sure his name was originally James Browning, & I'm not sure it is James Browning now, either. That's another story. Don't think he's donw a proper days work in his life - which I state as a compliment - he just ducks & dives on Sports Betting, poker, a bit of this & a bit of that. An extraordinary man who has lived a thoroughly entertaining life full of an eclectic range of pleasures.

    More on the others shortly.

Nick Wealthall - a very good looking, sharp-witted, clever & funny man - also came to Sky Poker, & there was, famously, an incident with pocket billiards & Helen Chamberlain on the Show one night. He later moved across to 'Stars, doing blogging, Live Updates & stuff, & is still there I believe.

Dr Tom (Tom Sambrook) was a little edgy with me, & after I made a comment about a hand he played & he got very cross with me one night on the Live Show. He was really severe with me, live on air, & it created a little tension. Later, he warmed to me & relationships thawed.

Lynsey Horn was better known originally as a Travel Reporter on radio, but she has done well for herself & presented all sorts of stuff, including on BT Sport. She married a fella in a band, "Toploader", think his name was Hipgrave, we had them both on the Sky Poker Show when we had that "green studio" in Feltham.

Casper Berry is a "motivational speaker" now, whatever that is. It was said that he had the gig of "Poker Advisor" on Casino Royale, which is a film I believe.

Matt Broughton came across to Sky Poker, too, & presented "The Club" for several years. Bright, erudite, witty man, though he & I were cast from different batches & we were never likely to marry each other. Think he is "The_Waster" on Twitter.

I sat next to Lynne Beaumonte in a tournament in Aria, just one of their $125 evening ones, back in May 2014. At the time I didn't realise who it was, it wasn't until she had her very large FT cash in a WSOP event later that summer that I joined the dots in my mind.

Very pleasant lady, well spoken. She talked about her Swindow home games, and then reeled off a few names of people that had participated in them that I know of from my background on Sky.

Quite what she thought of the drunken youth who doesn't pronounce words properly and took up plenty of table space, I'm not too sure.

    Other PNL Presenters/Analysts included.....

Malcolm "The Rock" Harwood. Malcolm was quite old, certainly too old for TV really. Can't be doing with old people on TV, way too boring, they should all be pensioned off when they reach 50. He'd been on Late Night Poker 5 or 6 years earlier in fact. Later, he became closely associated with a Northern based poker forum, AWOP. We had a bit of a tiff at The Broadway, where I had been doing Live Updates for years, & he somehow got the ear of a higher up & nicked the gig, so I had to sit out. Micky Wernick then asked my why I (blonde) was not doing the Live Update, & when I told him, he went straight to the owner & insisted I got the gig back. The owner liked to keep the right side of Micky as Micky usually owed the owner a few bob. Micky was like that, often had to borrow a few bob, but he was as good as gold & always paid the lot back, often with interest, eventually. Micky was not at all well the last time I saw him, hope he is OK.

Greg "Axeman" Winters, sheesh, he was a strange one. He got the bin tack from PNL after he went on their poker forum & said ladies had no place in poker, they were not bright enough. Well as they employed Kara, Michelle & Lynsey, that went down a treat, so he was on his bike.

Later, he wrote one of THE most bizarre letters I have seen in my entire life. He did not rate me, not at all, which was fine, no prob with that. But he wanted the Sky Poker gig, so he wrote to the Sky Poker Head of Recruitment (my boss at the time) & asked for the job. That's fine, too. What was not terribly bright was writing to the Head of Recruitment & telling him that the guy who hired me must be a nutjob, as I was the worst analyst ever born, or words to that effect. That's also fine, of course it is. But its not really very bright to write to the guy who recruited me to tell him he was a nutjob for hiring me if you expect & want the job, now is it?......

Anyway, he later turned up at GetMinted Poker TV, but that never lasted long.

Later, he joined blonde, abused everyone, said he hated the place, & got himself banned. Next day he set up a new alias, rinse repeat, banned again. That happened FOUR times. And I kinda think, look, if you hate the place that much, why keep signing up?

I saw him a few years later down in Brighton Rendezvous, but the convo was a bit strained. It always was with him at the poker table, he used to sit & do a crossword, & never say a word to a soul.

Of late, he's become a musician, has his own website, TheAxxeman.com, think he plays pubs & the like. A few of his music vids are on You Tube.

We get along much better now we don't see each other. ;)

    ;)

She is very suave & posh, always reminds me of Princess Anne.

Look her up on THM - a most impressive poker CV. She had 13 cashes in Vegas in 2014, including a quarter of a milly in the Monster Stack. In 2013, she had 4 wins at The Wynn, too. Quite a player.

She was in Vegas this summer, & played the WSOP Tag Team thing, in a team that included Peter Costa. Finished 109th I gather. So Pete Costas is featuring on 2 current threads now, this, & Grumpy Jac's. Quite a story with Pete, too, but I'll maybe stick that on Jac's thread, think I've intruded more than enough on this one now.

Anyway, the Token of Appreciation Diary is up & running now, good luck Mr POTO

Thanks for the additional background. I recall Kara Scott also came from the backgammon world, she got the hang of poker pretty sharpish though.

I do recall the launch of sky poker, which did not go down well at the time with the PNL regulars.

Tricky times and I (if not the forum) appreciated your loyalty to PNL when you were left as one of the only presenters standing.

I was a slow and reluctant convert to sky poker tv at the time.

By the way, I think the word smug was what I was searching for when trying to put my finger on my dislike (or less like than the others) for Caspar and Matt.

I prefer the British self effacing nature so ably portrayed by yourself, and even the likes of Thewy and Mr Ambo who never talk themselves up or talk down to the viewers.

    This is really good phantom.

    I loved PNL

I'd get in from Gala at something like 2am with work at 6am. I'd always turn on the tv and watch it rather than go straight to bed as I should have. Don't really know how I kept my eyes open at work. As a single man at the time it wasn't too bad, I'd sleep all afternoon.

For some reason something James Browning used to say a lot still sticks in my mind. Most times in live poker there wouldn't be a pre flop raise and just a fair few calling to see flops :)
He used to say "KQ rules in the land of the unraised pot"

I found Caspar a really interesting character. Also liked Tom a lot. I thought Lindsey seemed very nice but I didn't quite have the same feelings for her that I did for Kara and Michelle.

Tikay came along a little bit later on and was good too. It did take me a little while to warm to him because I'd got comfortable with the other presenters.
I was at the bar one night at Gala chatting to Maria when he came up to us. I was in awe. Mostly at this chaps confidence. He was entirely comfortable wearing a maroon jacket and bright blue trousers at Gala. Being Tikay, he was very nice. He bought me a drink and then enquired if it was possible to borrow Maria for a few minutes. Seemed a fair deal.

    Cheers Jac.

Enjoying your reminissances too, just cannot relate to the names other than the ones that were on LNP. Tikay adds a bit of colour though (with his descriptions as opposed to his jackets for once).

Best not say too much about my feelings for Kara and Michelle. I know what you mean about Linsey. Seemed really nice and would be great to have as a friend, the sort you could chat to about football and poker and ask what your chances were with Kara or Michelle. You would know in your heart they were zero but could rely on Linsey to let you down gently.

Youve just gone up my estimation Phantom -PNL was my route into poker and the reason I became both addicted and more than competant at the game. It put me well ahead of the curve for a long time. We must have clashed at times (I was still CraigSG1) as I used to always try to get on Beat the Presenter and always got a buzz when I did well or won one of those SnG's. It was not only the presenters but the fact they showed the whole SnG from start to finish and you learnt so much the value of shoving first to having to call and looking for good spots to squeeze even if your hand wasnt great because of table dynamics and bubble play etc etc.

I too had a massive crush on Michelle and not to mention Kara and Lynsey! Kara Scott first started on this show as a presenter and it was great to watch her improve as a player and she has become quite the player now! I used to love Nick and Casper together and of course Tikays enthusiasm! Dr Tom was quite a calm and collected bloke, not sure if I liked him or not. Really trying to remember what the guy with the beard was called that loved to play 74s (and even now its ingrained on me every time I get that hand I cant help but play it at times!). Lol, as I right I get that exact hand. Sigh, had to fold to an all in  :)

EDIT: Just seen Tikays entry, Mark Banin loved the old 74s!

Hi Craig I was still a Phantom, cant remember if the 66 was associated with it on that site.

I thought it was 87 with Mr Banin though he may have had a penchant for 47 too.

I just remember 3b shoving him off a button raise twice and eventually winning the game and being described as his Nemesis.

Thinking about it I do remember a Phantom fella! Your making me doubt myself about 47 now with the 87 but I think Im right because I remeber it being quite a weird hand but I suppose 87 would have been weird back then!

Thanks a lot to Tikay for your profiles on the presenters, A great trip down memory lane. I too was one of the last to leave the sinking ship for Sky Poker TV (Very begrudginly!!). The signs where there when it changed from a daily show to three times a week.

My greatest feat was winning there version of a main event where they always played the FT in the last hour and I won it two nights on the trot!

My eternal thanks the PNL, Tikay and the 'rest' for where I am today!

Really pleased you are posting again. Along with Jac's new start this will be one of the first ports of call with my breakfast.
I can't add much to the good old days of sky poker, I remember channel hopping and came across the coverage of the Wsop, I was hooked from the start, it seemed such an easy game ( hah)
My introduction to playing was on a free play site, my alias was novtom ( clever eh) I used to play on the old dial up, remembering the frustration of waiting for the tinternet to start up.
I was really sad when the site closed down, I managed to convince my good lady that depositing £10 on a certain other site was a good idea, especially as we now had broadband. I think I played on there for around 6 months when the infamous story of Tomgoodun ( I'd got a bit better so my alias deserved a slight tweak) joined the players I had watched on TV.

Look forward to reading more. Good luck on the felt.
