A good night tonight, but it was so close to being a REALLY good night.

Before the session started Andy set up a little final table challenge with me having a 2.5/1 advantage. So if he ft'd 2 and I made 1 ft then I won, but if he made 3 then he won etc. This may come as a surprise......but Andy won.

The main story of the night though was very deep runs in both the Main and the Mini. At the 22:55 break I was sitting 9/20 in the Main and 3/11 in the Mini and I started to dream of a final table jackpot.

By the time I had made the ft of the Mini I was still going in the Main sitting 10/10, just 4 spots away from the jackpot but in need of a double up to have a chance of making the final table. I stayed patient and the perfect spot for a double came my way when it was folded round to me in the SB with 10bbs and pocket 3's. In they go. I get the call and it's a race with A8o for a great chance of the jackpot. Wasn't even a sweat. Ace on flop, 8 on turn and I'm screaming for a 3 on the river, but unfortunately it didn't appear and the dream was over.

    4 places short :(

So it was 10th in Main and 3rd in the Mini. **** of a ride though and I would have obviously taken those results at the beginning of the night so I can't complain.

    Only just seen this Ryan.

Yeah, a little unlucky not to do better, but still a very satisfactory evening.

Yeah, a little unlucky not to do better, but still a very satisfactory evening.

To be honest, when we got down to the last 2 tables in the Main I was always one of the shorties, so it was never really on. I had a chance but needed some help. So I wasn't overly disappointed not have done it. Would have been gutted if I had a top 3 stack and got coolered or something but luckily that wasn't the case.

Those 90 or so minutes when I was in with a chance were great though, was loving it. That's what poker is all about for me, enjoyment. Any money is just a bonus.

Exactly that, EXACTLY that. It's why we, as recreationals, play poker. That buzz is just amazing.

Another session completed and I can't help but feel a little frustrated.

I feel like I missed out on 2 big scores after coming close in both the Main and the Midnight Express. My exit hands in both felt like I could perhaps have played them differently, maybe not so in the Midnight Express which has a fast structure, but certainly in the Main where I jammed my 12bb with KQo in the bb after an utg limp that turned out to be AQo. I wish I'd just checked. Hindsight is a wonderful thing.

Still, it was a reasonable night and once again close to a great night. I feel I'm getting closer to a decent score (touch wood).

I have transferred the whole BR back onto Sky now as Andy doesn't need anymore HH's so I want to give 100% of my playing time on here and try to build the BR as high as I can.

Well I think there's a bit of hindsight there Ryan. If you HAD checked, & ended up folding, you might then have been saying, if no further spots arose, "If only I'd jammed that KQ"...

Of course, you could have flopped your Q & so be drawing very thin.

Player dependent, but a limp round the back at that late stage would raise a red flag, so it's not clear cut.

Seems all pretty standard to me, though your Coach might have a better, & certainly more valid, view.

Keep doing the right things & that elusive big bink will come soon enough.

Yeah we did discuss it briefly last night. There were shorter stacks and big pay jumps. That and the fact the utg limp could be a concern makes me lean towards just checking. Not to worry. I always do the write ups straight away when everything is still a bit raw, I never dwell on these things though, it's forgotten and we go again.

I can't play tonight as I'm on taxi duties so back on the tables tomorrow.

    Update:

Tonight got off to a good start and then fizzled out towards the end of the session.

I made 2 final tables then proceeded to run awful in both of them which was a tad frustrating. Also a bit annoyed not to have capitalised on a promising position in the £6k BH, but the head prizes did soften the blow slightly. Never really got going in anything else.

A small profit on the night, which I will always be happy with.

Tonight's session had more bricks than Stanley Dock. I'd like to say it was all run bad, but that would be a lie.

I always aim to finish a session knowing that the majority of my exit hands were unavoidable and were played correctly. That was the case for some of the tournaments but around half the games were lost due to making poor decisions, both pre and post flop.

I just wasn't really at the races tonight. It happens, it's not the first time and it won't be the last. I'll be back tomorrow for another crack with renewed focus.

    Update...

Before I start, I'd just like to give credit to Customer Care for the way they handled my accidental rebuy in tonight's Main. I sat out straight away, contacted them via live chat and they refunded me. Very good of them.

Onto the poker. I have hit a sticky patch. Last Tuesday's session was horrid and the following night's attempt got off to a shocker leading me to tilt de-reg from everything else as my head had gone. I was having an enforced break over the weekend due to the boxing and family visits, but I ended up not playing on the Thursday either, which was probably for the best.

I came back tonight from the mini break raring to go but it was same old story in most of my games. Poker is a serious pain in the backside sometimes. But, just when I thought it was going to be another bad night, I ended up winning an £11 BH to really save the session and hopefully put an end to the recent blip in results.

    Relieved....

Yeah you do make a good point Alan I suppose. My mental game is pretty bad, it's improved slightly, but still not great. It only takes one bad night to dent the confidence and make me worry that a downswing is imminent.

I'll try to keep it a bit more upbeat from now on.

You moaned about being rubbish at MTTs and we saw how that turned out on Sunday. I'm trying a similar tactic.....hasn't worked yet though :)

I'm saving my biggest grumble for boxing day, really gonna lay it on thick, "I've had a rubbish Xmas, the kids have bankrupt me, I'm running bad at Poker and life etc." then pray it works for UKOPS.

Tough gig tonight (not a moan Alan). Came close in a few including busting 3 short of a Summit seat and bubbling an £11 BH, but in general I couldn't really get going.

My average buyin has increased, and will stay around this level whilst I'm still above the 2k mark. This means that the chance of encountering stronger players has also increased and that was certainly the case tonight. Tough tables and tough spots, but I'm enjoying the challenge.

I could stick with £5 tournaments and have a higher win rate but that's not what I want from the game. I want to keep trying to improve and trying to slowly move up the stakes. If I dip below 2k then I drop back down, it's as simple as that. Nothing ventured, nothing gained.

Back on the tables on Thursday.

    17:30 - £5.20 Summit Sat (Seat)

You defo have the ability to move up stakes Ryan (imho). Maybe only stronger players in you head. You can certainly hold your own against them. Sensible to take a shot and drop down again if you miss. Just get one of them boom buttons of Tikay and you will be sweet. My prediction is you will reach/smash 5k just after Xmas UKOPS ;)

Another losing night only slightly saved by a min cash in a £22 BH. I did finish exactly 3 off the money in both £11 BHs, so at least I'm getting closer to a turnaround.

The exit from the 2nd £11 BH sums up how it's going. Sitting 6/14 with 11 cashing, I get KK and run them into Aces to bust in a 70bb pot and a top 3 stack. At least I'm going deep in a few though, so there are some positives to take away.

    Back for another crack tomorrow.
