    Trivia question:

When was the last time a PM and the Monarch shared the same christian name?

    Great question.

I think it is William Lamb, normally known as (2nd) Viscount Melbourne, and William 4th, 1835-37.
    Correct

Next monarch may of course change all that.

Prince Charles will probably not be Charles 3rd. He is free to choose, and tradition states it is normally 1 of his forenames, so Charles or Philip or Arthur or George. I believe the current thinking is he is likely to be George 7th. George Galloway, or Gideon (call me George) Osborne, anyone? Maybe not.

Of course, if he was to become King Gobsh1te 1st, nearly all politicians would share his name :)

Ms Truss's Christian name is NOT Elizabeth or Liz, it's Mary.

Surprised you never picked that up Phil, most unlike you.

    Mary Elizabeth Truss

    Mary Elizabeth Truss

There is no 1 definition of "Christian" name. It was originally the name given at a baptism. Sometimes it is a person's first name, but equally may be their preferred name.

Kings often change their regnal name from their 1st name. As an example, the old catch quiz question "Which two 20th Century UK monarchs have the same birth name?" The answer is Edward 7th and George 6th-both were christened Albert!

Similarly, Dim Lizzy will not be the 1st not to use their 1st birth name. Leaving to 1 side the various Lords, Viscounts etc, James Callaghan's 1st name was Leonard.

Not just politicians/monarchs are known by their middle name. James Paul McCartney, William Bradley Pitt, Marvin Neil Simon, Walter Bruce Willis, Robyn Rihanna Fenty, Henry Warren Beatty, Thomas Sean Connery, Joseph Rudyard Kipling, Keith Rupert Murdoch, George Orson Wells, Michael Colin Cowdrey...

    I do.

I did consider that the answer might be Theresa Mary May and Elizabeth Alexandra Mary Windsor ;)

PS-do you think Walter Willis could have been an action hero?

    That's SUCH an interesting point.

"Bruce" is what we know, recognize & associate with the action hero & we therefore think that "Walter" would not work. But there's an interesting psychological trick going off there, rather like, I suppose, conformation bias which some poker folks subscribe to, albeit unwittingly. In reality, Walter would have worked equally well, & Bruce would have sounded daft.

The mind is a weird thing.

Actors and musicians are surely less relevant to the argument, as they often just make up names.
    Bono, The Edge etc,etc.
    Understandable on times.
Who would have believed in a rough, tough cowboy called Marion.

    Names can be very important.

Prince Charles being a prime example. Mystery to me why the Queen chose that name for her first-born. Charles 1st & 2nd are generally regarded as among the worst monarchs we have ever had.

Perhaps I am biased, but Philip would be an inspired choice. There have been lots of King Philips throughout Europe, just not in the UK. Would be nice to honour his Dad, too. Similarly, a King Arthur would be great.

Walter Willis? Unlikely. There have been very few Walters that history remembers. Disney. Raleigh. And then I'm struggling.

So-Rishi Sunak says he will be "right behind" the PM.

I'm reminded of the Football Manager (I think it was Tommy Docherty) who when told in a Press Conference that his Chairman was "right behind him" replied:-

"Stick him in front. Where I can see him" :)

Well I guess thats curtains for legal online poker. Ian Duncan Smith will be put in charge of gambling and you will be seriously lucky if you can play £5 games in the not to distant future.

Some people have pointed out this will be way down on the priority list well yes and no.

Obviously the war in Ukraine, the cost of living crises Covid (even though its not really talked about much its still here) and the vegan blockade soon to become a major issue, will all rank above the gambling white paper.

However people seem to think that just because its way down the priority list it will be a while before they get to it. not really just means it will get a lot less time and be rushed through.

Liz Truss probably cares very little about the gambling white paper. She probably would not care on either extreme if there was no restrictions what so ever and bookies were even free to take money out of your bank account without your permission and say you have to stake through 50 times to get the money out, or the alternative if people were limited to a 50p bet once a month and had to hand in a years worth of bank statements and pay to be audited by accountants to verify they can afford that 50p once a month in order to be allowed to bet.

The thing is though Ian Duncan Smith cares passionately about this issue and to my understanding has made this his number one issue to focus on. He has been a strong backer of Liz Truss and obviously in politics favours for loyalty are exchanged expect Ian Duncan Smith to be put in charge of the gambling white paper. Ian been a gambling prohibitionist the future is very dark for legal gambling in the UK.

I predict within a year or two every single online bookie or gambling site that is legit will have pulled out of the UK because it will literally be impossible for them to turn a profit with the new regulations and restrictions that will come in.

I dont think there is much need to do anything right now just continue as normal. There wont be an option to play online poker through legitimate means once this white paper is finalised so I guess when we have sufficient notice withdraw entire balance when the sites give us deadlines before they close operations in the UK.

I hope I am wrong there is a tiny chance I am but I think this is very unlikely. I just prey they dont geo block black market sites.

mind you when there is a will there is a way.

Somewhat overly pessimistic & dramatic imo....
