greetings. my daughter is 21 now and suffers from autism, ADHD, psychosis and schizophrenia. we were told she would never live to see 20 and that she would either be in an institute or prison by the time she was 18. they were wrong. she still lives with my ex and even though she has a lot of probs she enjoys life (usually at my expense! lol). many see a diagnosis of autism as an end to life, it isn't, it's just a start of a new wonderful (but hard work) life. when she went to a 'special' school, we got a lot of eye rolling and sneering from certain people; if you get this ignore them.. 'special' is the right term for that is what they are..SPECIAL. the teachers etc helped not only my daughter but my ex and myself learn to enjoy life to the fullest. best of luck laurie

Sounds like your daughter has an extreme mix of issues. My hat is off to her cant imagine what it must be like. I really like the comment i have bolded from this quote.
"....when she went to a 'special' school, we got a lot of eye rolling and sneering from certain people....."
That is SUCH a great point, only those who have children or family in that position, or have been to a "Special School" themselves know how painful that is, when people mock, or use derogatary terms about poker players which make light of it. They will never, ever, know the pain they cause, & so un-necessary.
The thread has been such an eye-opener, in so many ways. Those that carry the heaviest burdens in life, quietly & with great dignity, & do so without ever complaining, are my absolute heroes. Pretty much everyone on this thread, really.
Nice thread. Everyone should read The Curious Incident of the Dog in the Night-Time Posted by SoLack
THIS
The Curious Incident is a modern literary masterpiece and is a must read.
If ever there was a book that opens your eyes to indifference, this is it. It also happens to be hilarious in such a clever and easy to read way. In such a cruel world, a book like this should be on the school syllabus for ALL 10-11 year olds and then hopefully it would reduce the generally ignorant views that they take into senior school that go on to affect the lives of so many special educational needs students.
The indifference to those who are a little less fortunate than most of us is staggering, & I think he is right - a little education, help them understand from an early age, would go a long way. I guess indifference is one thing, openly mocking them via lazy & unimaginative use of derogatory phrases, which so many do, is quite inexcusable.
Don't start me off, this subject makes me so cross.
Come on Bignoise....join the HITSQUAD....i've joined just in the last week or so. I can recommend it, mate.
There's no pressure to do anything. You'll get facebook mails to scan but you needn't answer or do anything. There's free, fun comps organised by Dave (HITMAN_RV) and others incl the eurosport football 'guessing'...just fun...simple as. It will take your mind off 'stuff' for a couple of minutes.
DTD Forum is a good comp on a monday. Just a fiver or so for a night's entertainment and results published the next day. There's team and individual competition in it.
Just look in Team talk section...fill in the 2 min application sheet and that's it. Make the choice ...you'll feel good, i promise!!!

My mum bought me this a few years back, and i loved this book. Never been much of a reader and had to read bits of it twice or even three times to understand its a very good book.
Paul the title of your post says it all,i know whatever is thrown at you regarding your son you will cope with it,he is your son you love him and that is all that matters.
As quite a few of the guys have mentioned poker is just a distraction from real life and it can be fun as well as frustrating at times.I would understand if some people dont believe what i am about to say but i never get angry or lose it over anything that happens in poker,it is just a game.

Learnin now that the game is just that.Gotta say,the last couple of weeks have been different with regards to reacting to bad beats etc.The acceptance and shrug of the shoulders and just say "oh well, wire up a new game and get into it" is a marked difference to what it used to be like.It used to be a woe is me attitude.Things change man.In a way this could be for the better.Cos if the weeman was always gonna be different,at least my change in philosophy has made me realise that the enjoyment of the game comes over losin a few quid here and there.Appreciate the post bud and run good.
Enjoy your time with us when you can I hope it helps!!

Poker IS Full of Drama Queens, So is Life, A few tackle their problems & issues with Dignity & Honour!
It's nice to see so many people pitching in with their stories on this thread and so think I should put mine in, having never mentioned it to anyone on Sky.
Emma, my partner, had a daughter (Lily) not long before meeting me. She had a very troubled pregnancy and birth, with lots of details I won't go into but when she was born Emma was told there was only a 50% chance Lily would live.
She did make it through, and has had many hurdles to overcome along the way. She is still a late-developer in many regards. She has hyper flexible joints and very low muscle tone which meant she was not able to stand un-aided until she was over 3 years old, she can now walk but only with the aid of ankle splints which she will have for the forseeable future. Her speech has always been behind but she is slowly getting there.
Since about the age of 6 months, she has had regularly speech therapy, physiotherapy, hospital assessments. In her latest assessment, they discovered a heart murmur which they believe to be a fault in the valve in the left side of her heart which could increase her risk of heart infections and heart failure, we do have an appointment for a scan where they will be able to make a more accurate diagnosis.
One concern we had was whether she would go to 'mainstream' school or not, but we have recently been told she does have a place in our local school and will be starting in September. They are in the process of trying to obtain funding as she has always had one-to-one care during pre-school and would really require it in the early stages of school.
I don’t often contribute to threads on here but it has been refreshing and heart-warming to read this one and I wanted to contribute.
I think that what we often see here and on the Forum FB site reflects the diverse and sometimes extreme aspects of human nature that we see in the world outside of poker.
I have worked with children all my career, including many with special needs and some who are considered to be profoundly disabled. What I have come to realise is that everyone has something special to offer. I visited a young man recently who is deaf and blind with profound physical disabilities too – he has a smile that makes everyone who sees it smile and feel happy. When you see him you truly know what the term “lights up the room” means. So, which is the more valuable – that amazing smile or winning the main event? Also, the people that work with some of these children are often the lowest paid and yet inspiring, generous, committed and full of smiles themselves.
What I have realised with poker, as in life, is that how we play it depends on our nature. I regularly see on other threads and on FB those (although few) who appear to want to upset, outdo or try to be more clever than everyone else. I feel for them as they are likely to be quite unhappy people. What I also regularly see is those (many) who want to help, make people smile and be part of a community. I like poker and I also like people! There’s nothing better than laughter (it’s that funny noise you make at the back of your throat when you’re happy!).
Humans can give pleasure to other humans or do the opposite. It’s not a difficult choice really, is it?
